When attempting to restore to a previous restore point
because my computer was slow and freezing frequently, the
computer (can you believe it?!) froze in the middle of the
restore process. Now I really have a mess. Half my
programs don't work any more, my computer doesn't
recognize that I even have a sound card, my CD burner
won't work, the DVD player won't function at all, plus
many other issues. Oh, yeah! The restore program no longer
works either!!!! Any suggestions of what to do next?

Reinstall Windows on top of itself. You will not lose data. Boot up with
your Windows CD. If not bootable, boot to DOS with CD ROM support. If you
don't have such boot disk, get one from www.bootdisk.com. While in DOS, put
in your Windows CD. Type "setup" or "E:\setup" without the quotes.

If you don't have the Windows CD, the system files may be in the CABS
folder. From a:> type "c:\windows\options\cabs\setup" without the quotes and
hit ENTER.

DO NOT attempt the above - without reading the advice at
http://www.btinternet.com/~winnoel/reinME.htm
first - or you could end up with almost as many problems as you have now!

BTW - how far back were you attempting to restore to?

I was trying to use a restore point about a month prior.

That's way to far back to get a reliable restore point - there's too much
that can happen on a system over a month that isn't covered by SR.
I suspect that a reinstall of ME (following the instructions at the website)
may be your best option.
When you get it back up and running, make sure that SR is working properly -
look at the relevant page on the same site....
