Anyone running an MS Intellipoint / Pro mouse, could you let me know if
there are any items auto-starting in MSCONFIG?=20

When I installed Intellipoint, it added MOUSE or POINT or something to
startup. I deleted it since Me mouse driver is fine and the extra program
seemed to double movement of the scroll wheel.

It's point32.exe that appeared in my startup that was only for the systray
control panel. I've never had it attempt to call home for updates or
whatever. If it did call home, all I can hear it saying is, "I'm broke. I
suck. I can't do anything right. I suffer from involuntary movements..."
hehe :) At a quick glance older version of the mouse software may have
contained the .dll or other programs use the same filename for it is a
fairly common name.

Hi Silj
I have it in my start-up, haven't got around to stopping it yet and it does
try to phone home but my ZA blocks it everytime. I have Intellipoint 4.1 for
my Microsoft Optical Wheel Mouse.

Hi Jeff,
Thanks for the info, it's "Point32.dll" that loads via MSCONFIG,
there have been reports of the dll or and executable, "phoning home".
Some would call that a Remote Access Trojan or RAT.

Like Joan, I have the Optical Wheel Mouse and it does like to imitate "E.T." and
Zone Alarm pops up the request. Depends on my mood whether or not I OK. But, I
find it necessary to leave it in msconfig otherwise my system starts without all
the moue functions available. So, I have to go to the mouse manager and start it
manually. BTW, I still haven't found out why the mouse does not work in safe mode,
even though I am connected through the PS2 port.

Just been to read the posts Silj, very interesting but I won't be stopping
it in msconfig or I would lose functions that I use with my mouse. It is no
real problem as ZA blocks it going out so will let sleeping dogs lie <g>

I assume that this must be an "added feature" of v4.1. My PCs are all still
using Intellipoint v4.0.0.657 and point32.exe has never made any attempt to
call home.

Thanks, Joan <g>=20
Glad ZA does a job of blocking phone home attempts.=20
The term likely existed already but I heard it for the first time the =
other day.
Phoning home - is, a "RAT" Remote Access Trojan.=20

Cheers.=20
