Anything that modifies the Registry, in any way, can be potentially
dangerous.......even more so for the "computer inept." For $30, I think you
could do better with some free apps. One that comes to mind is Crap
Cleaner, www.ccleaner.com . It does a nice job of finding 'Issues' with the
Registry, gives you the option of 'fixing' all items or individual and, most
importantly, it backs up the changes. The back up is the most important
part...if something does go awry, you can recover through the backup.
There are a bazillion Registry 'cleaners' and 'enhancers'....some better
than others and some that are downright dangerous. You are wise to
investigate before investing money or time. I am sure there will be other
suggestions, mine is just an opinion and everyone has one. I recommend the
CC because of the simple user interface, its' efficiency, small size and it
has worked well for me.
Do some studying on the Registry (Google it), know how to backup the
Registry and how to restore it, open <regedit> from Start, Run and just LOOK
around.....a lot can be learned from just studying the layout.
http://www.winguides.com/article.php?id=1&guide=registry This is a good
place to start (it also advertises your Registry Mechanic).
The choice is up to you....just remember, all of the Registry apps will
claim to be the best. See the following reviews:
http://registry-repair-software-review.toptenreviews.com/
http://registry-cleaner-software-reviews.adorons.com/registrycleaner/top_reviews.php
You will quickly see that each site differs on what is best.

Loveembirds:

Heirloom's advice is priceless. There is really not much to add, except for
one thing: this particular piece of software is not recommendable because of
inherent dangers, as H pointed out already and I speak from experience,
since I've used it for quite some time myself (even though infrequently).
Ultimately I ran into some problems with it and stopped using it.
Your best advice: Hands Off!

Harry.

Just out of curiosity, Harry.........what problem did you have? Was it in
the "Analyze" stage or the "Issues?" If, as I suspect, it was with the
"Issues" (Reg stuff), did you not make a backup? I have been using this for
some time and have not yet had to use a restoral of a backup.....of course,
I don't let it clean everything in the "Analyze" stage, but, have everything
checked off in "Issues." I do scrutinize any issues found and if there is
any question, you can click on the entry and open the item in Regedit for
further scrutiny.........one's policy should be "if you are not SURE,
don't."

Heirloom: followup FYI by Rocky_T_Squirrel,

Rocky_T_Squirrel,
Sat Dec 03 20:05:31 CST 2005

Greetings Heirloom
Just a followup on our little Startup problem from a few weeks back.
The problem was tested and found to be a failing Xtal in the chip clocking
ckt.
one of a kind problem, (using a DFI AK-75 motherboard)
(A real S.O.B. to repair so will just replace motherboard)
Our guess is that the temp change during the air compressor cleaning caused
something in the Xtal holder to shift and thereby started the over all
problem.
The shifting clocking would account for a few other oddities we had noticed
from time to time. (ie.. programs stopping in mid run, excessive program
runs,
packet errors during downloads)

Thanks for the input to other possible problems..
RTS

Oh Heirloom:
We may be talking about two different birds of a kind.
I was referring to the *Registry Mechanic*.
If I could remember what went wrong in my case, I would have mentiomed it.
Sorry about that, H..

Harry.
