Error message
I recently deleted a couple of users off my computer
(Windows ME). It now comes up with an error message as
follows:
Windows encountered an error accessing the Registry.
Windows will repair the registry for you & restart the
computer.
When you press OK the computer restarts but just comes up
with same error message again.
Can anyone help-has anyone come across this before.

losing internet
Can I redownload any updates so after I lose my ip, that
if I need to format again I can install the updates? If
not, I may format now if there is a way to download them
to a separate folder and then install them that way I

Resolution and Color
I recently had my pc wiped out and windows me put back
onto the pc. I cannot change my resolution (pixel)setting
at all and I am only running at 16 colors. The pictures on
the computer are all choppy looking with dots all over.

Windows hanging on 1st start up
Hi all -
Windows has started to hang on the first startup since day before yesterday.
I thought at first it was just a 'thing', but, it is doing it with every new
startup. After I turn it off with the power button, it then restart it comes
up and works fine. I am not getting any error messages, it just freezes up
It seems to load ok, I have my active desktop displayed, but, once that
happens it just seems to hang, lock up, and I have to turn it off with the
power button and then restart. . It stops processing at the same place each
time, before the AV and then Zone Alarm loads.
I recall seeing a few other posts about a same or similar event, but, can't
nail them down, or remember the solution.
I would truly appreciate it if someone could point me in the direction of a
KB article or Help file that will address this. I found a couple of KB
articles, but, they did not address this problem.

folder options
Can I set default folder viewing options for all folders
without opening each folder and setting each
individually. I like the details view (not the icons) and
a preview option for .jpg .gif etc. I can set the options
for each individual folder but would like to know how to
set this as default for future folders created.

Deleting AOL files.
I have inherited my kids HP computer now that they are off to college. I
have deleted the main AOL program using Add/Remove but am left with 25 or so
associated AOL files. All sorts of stuff. The os is Win ME.
1. Can I delete these files from the Search program or print them off and
track them down with Windows Explorer or My Computer and still end up with a
properly operating Win ME ?
2. With information from this newsgroup I fixed the logon password problem
and the problem with it starting in Selective startup instead of Normal
startup. Thanks gang. Now when it boots up I get an Internet Explorer main
window popping up without being connected to the Internet. Could not find
any reference to this in the Startup section of MSCONFIG. Thoughts ?

ME Service Packs
Hi, Is there any way to download all service packs and
updates for MS Windows ME, and save to a folder for
future use?
I have a computer that has MS Windows ME on it that is in
much need of the service packs (it keeps freezing up),
but, it is not connected to the internet and do not
intend to connect it. How can I load all the needed
updates on this computer???

DVD Playback
I've just added a DVD player to a rebuilt Windows ME machine.
The drivers came with the drive unit, so I'm assuming it is setup OK...
I can use the drive as a CD without any problems, but I'm cant seem to get
DVDs going. On my XP Pro machine, I can view DVDs in windows media player,
but not on the ME machine. Buried in the options are file associations; my
XP machine has an option for DVDs, but the ME machine doesnt...
What do I need to do to play DVDs on this unit?

Trying to format HD with ME
Help!
I am trying to format my HD and used to boot into DOS and
do so, which can't be done with ME ( or at least the F8
feature doesnt work give the option anymore). My ME is an
upgrade Version for Win 98. PLEASE, if anyone can help, I
would appreciate it. My HD is in dire need of a format and

windows update problem
My OS is win ME. I have downloaded the following 2
updates several times. (DirectX 9.0b End-User Runtime AND
Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 6 SP1
(KB824145) ). Yet when I scan for updates, it still says

Start Menu Help
Dear One And All,
When I click "Help" from the start menu I am lately getting the notice
that "windows cannot find "helpctr.exe" " despite the fact that it is right
where it is supposed to be.
This is not a problem when "Help" is accessed through
"Accessories>System Restore>Help" nor when accessed while in "Safe Mode".
Anyone any idea why this would be and what one can do to restore the
proper linkage to "Start>Help"?

Was working with Excel ME and received the following

Servers
Are there problems with the servers or is it my connection, having
problems with trying to send some posts, it tells me it can't connect to
the server or a post won't download OE couldn't retrieve message. Then
when I try again it works <g> thought the servers might be going out of
synch again.

I am having trouble with my encarta..tried to uninstall

Run Time Error

I edit for a newsletter. When I send it to the publisher
who has ME she gets it with unnatural shortened and
elongated lines. We both use the AOL Email form.
When I send my edited version to myself everything is
fine. But she has to retype it to get it to normal. So it
seems there is something about ME that forces different
line and/or letter counts.

Digital Camera
I'm trying to install the fuji finepix software for my
fuji602Z camera that seems to install correctly. When I
plug my camera into the usb port my compaq computer acts
like its updating the hardware than it looks for the file
named usbtor.sys. It says this file is part of windows ME
but I didn't get a windows ME disc with my computer. I
could download the pictures from my camera just fine on a
computer I had windows 98 on. Help please!

Hardware Database
Am trying to install a new printer. I deleted the old one,
then followed the instructions for the new (USB style).
When I get down to the last part, the Hardware Database
Update hangs and the installation aborts.
Have checked, System-Device Manager-everything I can think
of.

defrag problems
I notice my computer sounds like it's processing even when
it's just sitting there. I also have problems when I try
to defrag. It restarts over and over and says" contents
on disk drive changing". I cannot find anything else that
could be running in the background. Any thoughts? I have

I hope I am addressing the right group for this. It's the
only group I've really used. My question is, when AVG does
detect a virus & move it to the virus vault should I
delete it from the vault or does AVG take care of that?? I
know AVG does rid it from the vault at some point but

Where's the refund
Since buying my computer new last year, I've had nothing
but problems. Everyone I talk the old "OH NO" when they
find I'm stuck (by Bill Gates and Friends) with "ME". The
system never worked and never will. I just tried to
download the up grade advisor from the Microsoft web site,
when it began checking my system to see if it could be
upgraded to a better operating system ME performed as
usual "poorly" and locked up. Apparently I need to throw
my computer in the trash because it is incapable of being
upgraded, according to Microsoft themselves. If theirs
anyone out there that can give me some advise it would be

New "Mydoom" worm launching a world-wide attack
F-Secure is warning email users around the world about a new Windows
worm which is spreading rapidly. The new worm, known as Mydoom or
Novarg, is spreading through email attachments and Kazaa file sharing
networks.
The worm has launched a world-wide denial-of-service attack from every
infected computer against the website of SCO, one of the largest Unix
vendors in the world. However, the WWW.SCO.COM site seems to be still
operational.
There's been a lot of discussion about SCO after they claimed last
December that the Linux operating system was violating SCO's
intellectual property rights in UNIX technology. "There are a lot of
kids out there who feel like SCO's attacking them", comments Mikko
Hypponen, Director of Anti-Virus Research at F-Secure Corporation.
"Apparently someone of them decided that it's ok attack back."
In addition of the denial-of-service attack, the worm also opens up a
backdoor to infected computers by listening to TCP port 3176. This way
the worm author can gain access to infected computers afterwards.
The emails sent by the worm are fairly random:
From: <random email address>
To: <address of the recipient>
Subject: <random words>
Message body: (several different mail error messages, such as:)
Mail transaction failed. Partial message is available.
Attachment (with a textfile icon): random name ending with ZIP, BAT,
CMD, EXE, PIF or SCR extension.
When a user clicks on the attachment, the worm will start Notepad,
filled
with random characters and it will immediately start to spread further.

Missing Fonts after reinstallation
Recently I had to reinstall Windows on my computer. For
some reason I lost a bunch of fonts I once had on my
computer. I don't remember ever downloading any before,
so why all of a sudden did they disappear - I thought it
was a part of my package. One example is that I don't
have any of these fonts that I could use along with my
instant messanger program. How do I get these fonts
back? I tried to ad fonts from my already existing font
folder but I have no idea where to start looking for these

sound not working
I just went to the Gateway site and downloaded the
software for the sound card. I had to do this because a
