    - safe mode won't load I was having trouble defragging because something was hitting the hard drive, so I decided to boot my laptop in Safe mode. When I used the f8 key to go to safe mode, the blank desktop loaded, then the system hung. CTl/alt/del produced a completely blank task manager screen. I hit restart and a completely blank "this program is not responding" button comes up. Once, instead of hanging it gave me the "error in explorer.exe you must reinstall windows" screen.     - partition and format survivors Can anything remain from a previous installation after a hard drive has been partitioned and Formatted and Win ME installed. I saved quite a few apps on a CD and selectively reinstalled some. But I've found that a new Zone alarm download recognises a previous version and will not install, even though the previous version was not opened. This 'clean' was a nightmare in more ways than one. After partitioning and reformatting, using a tried and trusted setup floppy, I found it impossible to load the OS. After 'n' attempts I found an old pair of partition magic rescue disks which, when used, announced that the drive wasn't formatted at all????? What had been going on over the previous hours remains a mystery. PartitionMagic at least allowed Win ME back in. Previously I kept getting Scandisk looking at drive DO, not the CD ROM at I. All of which left me wondering. How foolproof is partitioning and formatting using a setup floppy. Is anything left behind that can in any way interfere with new installs?     - 60,000 CPY files, all 0 bytes can't be deleted... I have been trying every solution I can find(listed in this and other newsgroups) to successfully install Direct X9. I think I've tried it 20 different ways at this point (and yes, disabling firewall, virus; renaming wininit files; trying it in safe mode, on and on..) What I did find, though, is that I have 60,000 .CPY files in my _Restore TEMP folder that cannot be deleted, even if I disable System restore and try to delete them in safe mode.     - Ctrl+Alt+Delete and Alt+Tab Not Working I posted this yesterday but haven't come up with a solution. Most of the time pressing Ctrl+Alt+Delete simultaneously will do nothing. The same goes for Alt+Tab. The keyboard is not the problem - all other functions involving the keys (such as Alt+F4 and Ctrl+C) work fine. This problem has been happening for about a year, although every now and then they both work.     - Swapping mobo in ME almost good but not quite........ Well, I swapped motherboards in a buddy's system using WinME. I did the Hkey/Localmachine/enum trick, but when I booted regularly the first time, ME found a lot of stuff, then I installed the motherboard's CD, then, lastly, I installed the video card CD and it's up and running. But.........2 problems........ #1.) Device manager shows a bunch of duplicates.....(mouse, keyboard, then a bunch of duplicates under "system devices"......like system speaker, DMA, enumerator, etc. etc.) If I remove them, they simply are all refound again. (tried several times now) #2.) No audio whatsoever. It shows AC'97 loaded correctly and shows no conflicts, but I don't even see a speaker in the clock tray and if I remove & try to reinstall either from ME's CAB files or the mobo CD, I still have no sound.     - Multiple Network Printers I didn't post this question to the network NG because I feel it is more an OS issue. I have a home network with one ME machine and one XP machine. The ME machine has a LPT1 laser jet printer and there is also a USB printer. When I open the MSHome Network it show 9 instances of printers. The LPT1 is shown as Printer and the other 8 printers are the USB printer. On the ME machine, There are just two printers installed and the properties shows the USB as sharing #9. Confusing huh? Dear All, a customer of mine has got a windows millenium edition and has applied latest IE's hot fix, so the authentication method http://username:password@server.domain.com does not run anymore.     - What is MS_WebcheckMonitor? I recently installed and ran a free program called "Karen's Window Watcher". What the program does is to display the titlebar text of all open windows, including windows that are not visible. In looking at the resulting list, I noticed a hidden window named "MS_WebcheckMonitor" and since I don't like being "monitored", I decided to find out more aboutit. Apparently, it's a window run by: Module File Name: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\WEBCHECK.DLL More research indicated that at boot time the following executable: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\LOADWC.EXE loads webcheck.dll into memory, where it stays throughout the Windows session, apparently wasting system resources. The Microsoft website tersely says the following about the module: "This object manages subscriptions." They also describe the loadwc.exe program as follows: "Loadwc.exe, also known as Load WebCheck, customizes some of the settings in Internet Explorer. Loadwc.exe adds, removes, and updates subscriptions. Loadwc.exe also propagates settings for user profiles." Whatever is meant by "propagate" in this context, I haven't a clue. I don't use subscriptions and I'm the only user on this computer. Thus, I can see no possible reason I'd need the webcheck.dll file loaded in system memory all the time. Go to RUN, type REGEDIT....click the plus marks in front of
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS and click the words Current
Version. Scroll to Registered Owner on the right hand side, then right click
that line and choose MODIFY....type in the new name and click OK. Close the
Registry.
