The disc that has all the programs for an HP Millenium is
missing. Is it possible to get a replacement, or is each
program too individual?

'all the programs'??
Windows Millennium Edition is an operating system - as such it contains a
lot of small programs (Notepad, WordPad, the calculator, etc), and a few
large applications - Internet Explorer being the biggest
If you need a new ME disk, then you'll have to go back to either MS, if your
Windows was bought Retail, or to your manufacturer, if it's an OEM copy -
either may refuse to replace it, if you didn't register the copy at time of
purchase (or even if you did!<g>)
in the case of MS - look here
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=326246

What I suspect you're referring to, however is things like Works, and other
applications that came bundled with your PC - for those, you'll have to
speak very nicely (grovelling never hurt anyone!<g>) to the manufacturer of
the PC, and see if they'll take pity on you - chances are that they'll make
a charge for it.

Kt and Noel (for future reference)
I purchased a RECOVERY CD from Compaq (now HP) last year for something
like $20, so that I could reinstall Win Me with whatever "bells and
whistles" that it originally came with. My recollection is that it
downloaded everything in zip files and then all had to be unzipped and
installed.

I can only say.....
your recollection is wrong (mostly).
Win ME (and any OEM CD produced from it) contains NO zip files. (it does
however contain a lot of CAB files, which are copied to the Hard Drive).

Well then I guess we are going to have to agree to disagree!
My Hard drive crashed last summer and I purchased a replacement from a
local shop and then installed everything from two disks ( I just
checked) that I purchased from Compaq (not the Recovery disk that
comes with the computer). My computer then was restored to Factory
settings.

....and those disks are manufactured by Compaq (unsurprisingly)and at least

all the fluff that Compaq insist on putting on your system,

The ME installation part of those disks contains NO ZIP zip files!

FYI: A .CAB file is in .ZIP format, and usually contains numerous
individual ZIP files. Isn't it a silly argument? :)

OK, won't argue about the Me installation part because I really don't
recall if it was everything or just the fluff as you describe it.
My original response was to alert KT, and you for future reference,
that Compaq indeed sells a separate Recovery disk (actually two of
them) that contains everything that was on your Compaq system when you
bought it for a nominal $20- $25 Canadian (Heck that's like 5£ or
something !!!).

Not quite true, Mike
.CAB files and ZIP files can (usually) be opened by the same apps - but they
are distinct formats (IIRC, the .CAB files are proprietary to MS, while ZIP
files are effectively open-source) - although yes, it may (and a lot of the
ME ones do) contain .ZIP files, none are visible in ME without the
Compressed Folders plugin, or id a DOS DIR command.

That's why I hang out here, I get taught something all the time. Thanks

PKWare has occasionally licensed their algorithms, but the ZIP format is
*not* open source, not even "effectively", in fact the latest PKZip
program is a payfor and they've stopped giving out free 2.04g downloads.

Nope. The following .ext are archives: .ZIP, .CAB, .RAR, .ARJ. ARC,
.GZ, some similar to .LHZ or so, etc. WinZip may associate itself
with many or all of these, but they are NOT all "zip" files!

Specifically, .CAB is a proprietary Microsoft format that I suspect is
optimized for bulk installs.

Extract a .CAB and see if .ZIP files don't fly out. JME. They are multiply
packed.

Which Win Me cab file do you think contains zip files? The only Win Me cab
file that I am aware of that contains zip files is WIN_22.CAB which contains
the various Java class files as zips. These being the zip files which with
randomized names are then placed in the Windows\Java\Packages folder.

Might be the one, Mike, I only claim experience, not expertise. :)

I don't know that PKWare owns any compression algorithms which it
could license.

A *.zip file is simply an archive of files that have been compressed using
various compression algorithms. The various compressors/decompressors
were not written by PK. Names such as Huffman, Shannon, Lempel, Ziv,
and Welsh should be credited.
(Google on such terms as Huffman tree, LZW, Shannon-Fano.)

PK uses these algorithms, and may modify them slightly. But I don't think that
they license the algorithms. (Don't really know for sure..) They do however license
\and sell an SDK which includes an API to make it easier to code zip/unzip routines.

On ZIP format open source: I don't know all the particulars of the "open source"
vs. "GNU", etc.., but the zip format itself has been published and has been
available since I can remember-

That wouldn't surprise me. PKWare has changed since Phil Katz died.
In fact, I was surprised that appnotes.txt was still available. They are currently
battling Winzip over proprietary encyrption techniques which could make
certain zips a proprietary format. Winzip countered with its own proprietary
encyption..

You're right; some MS OSs may contain .ZIP, not as explicit files on
the CD but within the .CAB set, as that's a Java thing. Most recent
MS OSs won't include a Java VM in defernce to Sun's litigation result.

Intersting, so I wonder if I see .ZIP extensions because of my particular
archiver (WinRAR) recognizing those algorythms in a .CAB file.
No matter now, as this thread is old, just curious. Thanks Bill, haven't
seen you in a while.

Your archiver shouldn't be changing the extension you see. I have WinZip,
WinRAR and WinAce installed on this box none of which on this box have ever
changed the extension of files contained in an archive, be it a cab, zip, rar
or whatever archive.
