Any recommendations for a firewall that works well with a WIndows ME system?
I don't mind paying a little if the cost is worth the added performance.

I have an older version of Zone Alarm on my WinME machine and not sure
what it is, but probably Version 4.xxxxx. On this XP machine I have
version 5.xxxx, but it is not being used.

To get older versions of a whole host of programs, see the following
link....

www.oldversion.com

I have used it many times.

Cheers......Heather

Layne,

Thanks for the recommendation and for the link. This website is new to me
and a good resource, but how do I find out which is the most recent version
that will work with ME? (Since oldversion.com has a lot of useful software,
it would be really nice to have a resource for system requirements.)

Sorry about the double listing of this post. When I submitted the post the
website (Microsoft) sent an error that I should try again later, and
apparently also created this double post since I did not resend it.

Any other recommendation besides Zone ALarm?

I'd recommend Zone Alarm 6.1.744. Some of the more recent version have
been problematic, to say the least.

I've had good luck with the free Filseclab Personal Firewall.
www.filseclab.com. However, I use it only on Win2K because I do not allow
WinME access to the Internet. (Nothing against WinME, it's just one less OS
to keep up to date.) Therefore it may not work on WinME. But it's so much
better (IMO) than ZoneAlarm, that I'd try it anyway if I were you.

Hi Paul (Laynie/Heather/Figgs) here......

I always stayed a few versions behind with Zone Alarm, due to conflicts
with the latest and greatest beta versions often, lol.

But I never used anything but ZA for all the years I have been on the
internet. OldVersion will have other firewalls, but I have no idea how
good they are.

On this XP, I have 5.5.xxx I do have the latest ones downloaded but as
Richard commented, some of the later 6.xxx ones were problematic. Which
proves my point about staying one or two versions back!!

Cheers......H/L/F

You've had a few suggestions but I know Zone Alarm Free works very well
with WinME but the version one behind the latest. My daughter runs WinME
and that one is on her machine.

Paul
Kerio version 2.1.5 came highly recommended from some of the experts in this
NG a few years back and I have been using it ever since without any problem.
It seems to be effective with a very small footprint. Kerio was purchased by
Sunbelt a couple of years ago and they continue to offer the free version.
If interested, read the section THE WHOLE 2.1.5 ISSUE and you may download
this utility at the bottom of the paragraph at the following sunbelt
website;

Hope this helps.

I agree with Dapper Dan. After I had some problems with
ZoneAlarm and based on recommendation from "Shane" I
switched to Kerio 2.1.5 and have been a happy camper ever
since.

Ditto. My hard drive failed and I rebuilt it from the system disks. I
had to download and reinstall everything. No fun. Anyway, ZA wouldn't
let me download the latest version. It said I had to have 6.1.744 to
work with Win-ME. So I did and it's smooth as silk. :-)
