I have this _RESTORE foler (hidden) under C drive, that is
taking up 3G of space. I tried deleting it but unable to
do so because 'the source file is in use'. Any suggestion?

Right click "My Computer" then click Properties>Performance>File System

Move the "System Restore Disk Space Use" slider to the far left i.e. min
setting.

Click OK

Note that you will still have SR on your system but it will only copy a few
days worth of backups to your disk.

If you want to disable SR totally from your system, which I don't recommend,
then see here:

Disabling System Restore

Windows ME and XP utilize a restore utility that backs up selected files
automatically to the C:\_Restore folder. This means that an infected file
could be stored there as a backup file, and VirusScan will be unable to
delete these files. You must disable the System Restore Utility to remove
the infected files from the C:\_Restore folder.

WindowsME

1. Right click the My Computer icon on the Desktop and click on Properties.
2. Click on the Performance tab.
3. Click on the File System button.
4. Click on the Troubleshooting tab.
5. Put a check mark next to 'Disable System Restore'.

Dear Buck Naked, I was trying the solution you gave me,
but the "System Restore Dick Space Use" slider is
disabled, so I couldn't make any changes to it. I also
noticed that at the same location, under the
troubleshooting column, the setting: 'Disable System
Restore' is checked. How can I enable the slider?

This is the archive used by Win Me's system restore.

First try resetting System Restore:
To reset System Restore:
System | Performance | File System | Troubleshooting and check "Disable System
Restore", Apply and IMMEDIATELY reboot. This will flush you restore folder
and erase all checkpoints, then,
System | Performance | File System | Troubleshooting and uncheck "Disable
System Restore", Apply and again IMMEDIATELY reboot. This should now
automatically create a new checkpoint immediately following the restart.
Finally adjust the space allocated to the restore folder,
System | Performance | File System | Hard Disk and adjust the restore slider
to your preferred setting. A figure of 200MB is normally more than adequate
for day to day use allowing perhaps a week of checkpoints to be available
although increasing this to perhaps 400MB for a few days during periods of
large installs such Microsoft Office is advisable.

If this doesn't clear down the _restore archive (and it doesn't always when
users have experienced similar problems) the next suggestion is to boot to DOS
using a floppy and delete the entire _RESTORE folder structure from there:
a) Boot to DOS using a floppy
b) At the DOS prompt, type:

A:\> ATTRIB -H -S -R C:\_RESTORE
A:\> REN C:\_RESTORE OLDREST

c) Remove the floppy
d) Reboot your PC
e) Delete the folder C:\OLDREST
f) Check that an automatic system restore checkpoint was created.
g) Finally adjust the space allocated to the restore folder:

Finally you may want to give system restore the once over by carrying out the
following quick test.
a) Create a shortcut on your desktop to a file.
b) Create a manual checkpoint
c) Delete the shortcut
d) Restore you PC to the checkpoint you created.
Was the shortcut restored? Did you see any error messages?

You problem is probably that the control files for System Restore have
become corrupted - and you need to clear out all the files, and start fresh.
Try this - Start|Run - enter SCANREG /FIX into
the dialog box, and click OK - windows will reboot - see if that fixes it.

Reboot to DOS using your Startup disk
enter the following commands at the A:\> prompt.

ATTRIB -R -H -S C:\_RESTORE
REN C:\_RESTORE OLDREST

remove the floppy, and reboot to normal windows. You should now have a new,
single restore point. Go to Windows Explorer, and delete the C:\OLDREST
folder. Then go to the Slider bar, and reset it to between 200 and 400MB.

National Pub Quiz? No. Thought about it for about 5 seconds and decided that
watching your paint drying might be more interesting. :-) Now, if I'd been
in a pub and there'd been a quiz, that would have been different perhaps.

As for ketchup, I just wanted to speed up the DELTREE process but didn't want
to use the registry way, especially as that only works if you can get to the
registry and also that would have opened up a whole new can of worms I felt
best left alone. I then realised that renaming was probably the answer. To
be honest I don't know why I didn't suggest it before. In fact looking at
some really old posts I did at one time but back then the main problem with SR
was working out how to get round the "false wininit.ini" problem and
discovering the scanreg /fix solution and we seemed to need to clear down the
_RESTORE folders far less than today.

Cheers, I'm off for an early night.

It's two separate methods - first _may_ work, and leave you with some useful
Restore points, while the second will almost certainly work, but leave you
with no restore points except the new one created on the reboot.

I will add my 10 cents worth. Thanks for you advice on
this frustrating Restore business. System Restore is a
real bummer. I had lost over 10GB off my 20GB disc and
installed an additional 40GB disc to upgrade my system and
stop it grinding to a halt. On your advice on this board
I disabled and re-enabled System Restore and by golly I
recovered those lost 10GB off my original disc in an
instant!! I now have 50GB HD spare space :-) good one
Mike,
