What in heck is causing this??? I keep getting "You are not authorized to

I still keep thinking there is some nasty on here, but damned if I can find

Which F-Prot site, Figgs? And is it in Trusted Zone? If not, what happens if
you put it there?

Sorry, Figgs - didn't realise it was you, before I posted that last!
Have you run the Stinger over the system? (while in Safe Mode!)

You may have a virus/spyware hijack

download the Stinger from here and run it to make sure that A-V-disabling
viruses are not present on your PC
http://download.nai.com/products/mcafee-avert/stinger.exe

- update your virus scanner and run a full system scan of all files.

Reboot to Safe Mode and run CWShredder - to remove variants of the
CoolWebSearch hijacker.
http://www.merijn.org/cwschronicles.html

Use CWShredder, the removal tool:
http://www.merijn.org/files/cwshredder.zip
http://www.merijn.org/files/CWShredder.exe
http://www.spywareinfo.com/downloads/tools/CWShredder.exe
http://www.zerosrealm.com/downloads/CWShredder.zip

download AdAware from www.lavasoftusa.com, install, update, and run it to
remove spyware, adware,
and other such nasties from your system.

Hello, Heather and all:

I've suddenly been having that same "not authorized" problem accessing very
normal Web sites. About the only thing I have NOT done is run the Stinger.
That's because when I try to download it, I get that same "HTTP 403 you are
not authorized" message.

Reset IE security to Medium with no change. Ran EZAV (eTrust Armor Suite),
Spybot, Ad-Aware, ScanDefrg multiple times in Safe Mode with no change.
System slows to a crawl after hours of use. Clock slows, too. I'm stumped
big time. Any help would be immensely appreciated.

I found that the Stinger site was blocked by my EZ Firewall. Not sure how
that happened. Anyway, downloaded /ran the newer Stinger in Safe Mode and it
found nothing. How about you, Heather?

Hi Puss.....

I have run everything known to man (and you too, grin)......but didn't run
Stinger in Safe Mode, which I will do now.

And to Shane.....yes, F-Prot is in the Trusted Zone.....a couple of Frisk's
different addresses are.

But of course.....they are working OK today. Baffles me.....

OK.....finished running everything I could think of in Safe Mode....and I
came up clean. Ran Stinger, CWS, Hijack This, EZ Trust, AdAware and did a
scandisk and defrag. The only thing I noticed, which probably was always
there, was during the AV scan.....said "unable to check boot sector on
C"......otherwise, no spyware, trojans or viruses.

Going to go on a gut hunch here and uninstall AdAware 1.03. It still
freezes on me from time to time. It is so hard to remember what all you
updated, added or installed when trying to track down what is causing the
problem. So I will start with that, once I try to access a few sites that
were giving me that message.

Cheers.....Figgs

Stinger found nothing here either. But oddly enough, I could not access
McAfee's page to see if there was a new version (I had the latest one, it
seems).....so used the Aug. 16th one. I got the usual "not allowed" when I
tried to get to the page to download it.

Not using EZ Firewall, but may check ZAPro to see if there is something odd
in there as well.

What's happening, Aunty Virus???
It seems to me you have either a systems- or a registry problem. I can't
tell you how to fix it, just try.
What do you think?

It's telling how quickly they've gone through 1.02, 1.03, two versions of
1.04, now on 1.05. I don't even remember if there was a 1.01!

Well......sunuvagun!! Those two were *exactly* the ones that would not
allow me to download either the F-prot defs or Stinger...and now I can.
What in heck worked??? I even have the F-prot link in my Trusted Sites.

You throw a hex their way?? Obviously I cleared up something with my mega
cleanup in Safe Mode, but nothing I could see. Do you know something I
don't?? (don't answer that, grin).

I will keep track of any others that give me that annoying message!!

Thanks for unhexing me......Figgs

Have NOT a clue, Harry me luv......but this computer has had a few *hinky*
things the past month. Perhaps there are too many security things on here
and they are messing me up. Zone Alarm will do that if you make it too
tight. I should probably set it all to *default*. Sigh!!

I await tomorrow's report that you can't access them again!

Or shouldn't I have said that?

You've got a point there, Heather.
I faintly remember Zone Alarm being that way.
Whatever you do, I hope it works.
And don't give up.

Harry, old and confident.

Crap. Still getting blocked from very normal Web pages. In my case, it
always occurs when I'm trying to link to another page/site from within a
site. Have accepted IE's default settings temporarily. And repaired IE using
Add/Remove Programs. No joy.

And the "not authorized" message seems random. I'll click on a given link
within a Web page and get the "403 not authorized" message. Then, a little
farther down the page, I'll try another link and everything's cool -- I'm
in.

I'm also unable to download the Macromedia Flash Player plug-in. Any chance
they're connected and one mouse click will make it all go away?

Arrrrrrrrgggggg.

Hmmm, I think that was the way it happened to me......when clicking on a
link to get to another page.....when Shane gave me the direct link in his
post, I had no problem.

Touch wood, OK so far, but will try F-Prot and let you know.

Cheers....Heather
