In the last week, I have been experiencing multiple
problems with my Me machine. I keep getting frozen
screens, and usually can't even use CONT_ALT_DEL to bring
up task manager--all I get is an infamous BLUE SCREEN
error! I'll reboot, and still get errors, once or twice
before I can use the thing for 10 minutes till the next
thing I do pisses it off for another blue screen. I was
starting to think that it was related to a new memory chip
I added last week, but a co-worker called me to tell me he
has been experiencing the same symptoms, especially since
installing the most recent security Update! Anyone else
notice a sudden increase in crashes with the last 1 or 2
Updates?

Ed,

You will need to provide a little more detail if you are going to get any help
such as the actual error messages you are seeing and what you are doing at the
time.

I tried to install them and my Dell crashed big time. Had to get Dell to
help me restore the registry and undue the changes by running scanreg
/restore.

Well, I was going to try that, but when I went to my Sys
Restore, it had no saves from before that last Update!
They all disappeared! My Sys restore file size is set to
max, too, as I have a 40 Gig harddisk, so they weren't
deleted for lack of storage!

Ok, here are the details! by the way, it seems to happen
without regard to what I am doing at the time. Yesterday,
I was minimizing my SETI screen saver when it flipped out.
Today, I was at the Windows update site looking for a way
to uninstall the last few updates. I clicked on a link
to "Windows Update Troubleshooter" and wham! Blue Screen
which stated "An error has occured, to continue press any
key or CTRL-ALT-Del etc. Filename : AFVXD (01) + 000033D7
ERROR : 0E : 0028 : C1AB5C37"
So I pressed any key, and the desktop returned, but IE was
closed. I retried to open IE, but got a window message
stating "IEXPLORE , Iexplore has caused an error in
MSHTML.DLL , Iexplore will now close", and there was
a "close" button in the window, which I clicked on, and
the screen froze! I tried CTRL-ALT-DEL to bring up task
mgr, but nothing happened, it was locked good. Tried CTRL-
ALT-DEL to bring up task mgr again, and I got another Blue
Screen that this time said "System is Busy, Press any key
or CTRL-ALT_DEL ...etc." So I pressed any key, and wham! a
different Blue Screen that said "WARNING! The system is
busy or has become unstable. You can wait or restart.
press any key to wait, or CTRL-ALT-DEL to reboot" So I
pressed any key again to wait, and all I got was a blank
black screen with my mouse pointer on it (and moveable, by
the way). So I tried CTRL-ALT-DEL, but nothing happend, so
I had to completely power down and reboot, so the whole
mess can happen again in 10 or 15 minutes. This is almost
constant for about the last week, since about 10/10 or
10/12. For the last few months my system has been
otherwise VERY stable!

Ed,

This is rather outside the areas where I feel able to provide basic support.
Your problems might seem to relate to net access. Some of the long chains of
events you mention don't really help that much as often once the first problem
has manifested itself what follows is unpredictable especially so when the
system becomes unstable.

So to summarise:
Blue screen on attempting to access the Windows Update Troubleshooter -
basically a URL with an error in AFVXD.VXD which is part of Winsock.
Blue screen on minimising SETI screen saver.

As I mentioned this is an area outside of my expertise but as a first shot I
would be looking closely for parasites that might be causing you these
problems. I'm sure you've already checked for viruses and trojans but most AV
applications don't check for parasites although many can be as harmful if not
more so than many viruses and worms.

Sorry not to be able to offer you the help you're looking for.

I tried using the restore function but that did not fix the problem. Only
when I ran scanreg /restore at the command level did it help.
