I am hoping someone can help me. I did a virus scan on my
computer the other day and had a win32.Benny.6382. Mcafee
was little help but now my scan is coming up clean EXCEPT
when I do a free one on line. But now when I go to my
outlook express I get a message that says MSIMN has caused
an error in kernel32.dll. Msimn will now close. I can't
send e-mails and i don't have anytime to read e-mails
before that message comes up. I went through my HP help
icon but I get an error that says HTTP error 404 and my
virus scan icon comes on about suspious activity. Mcafee
is no longer helping me because htey say I have no virus,
HP I can't get in touck with and Verizon had me reinstall
my outlook and I got no where. Now they say the virus may
have done some damage and they suggested I come here.
PLease keep in my that I know little about the computers
except how to check my e-mail. Thanks for any help you
may be to me.

OK, Jenna.....I will take it slow. But a few questions first.

What antivirus program told you this name? I checked McAfee and it
doesn't list it. Symantec (Norton) lists a W32.Benny.gen, but there is
not much information and it may be new. I checked PC-Cillan (Trend) and
they don't have it either.

What free scan are you doing online? As Norton/Symantec seems to be the
only one mentioning a "Benny".....I suggest you go there and scan your
computer again. Go the the page below on Benny and run the scan at the
lower right.

http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/dyn/30439.html

http://housecall.antivirus.com/housecall/start_corp.asp This is Trend
Housecall and is also an online scanner, but they don't seem to list
anything called Benny.

So.......first order of business.......what program gave you this virus
name. And run an online scan.

Reinstalling OE isn't a method to get rid of a virus......and it seems
to be one of the usual 'fixes' that ISP's and company techs tell you to
do. Mine just told me that the other day and they were wrong.......the
OE news group figured my problem out in minutes.

Once you know that you no longer have a virus (if indeed you did have
one) then we can go from there. The error you are getting is not an
uncommon one, but we have to rule out a virus first.

Never heard of "eAnthology Manager" as an antivirus program.......but I
do recall some mention of it, possibly containing spyware.......

OK.....just had a look with Google and it seems it does contain Spyware
and is connected with IMesh......go here to see how to get it off your
computer......and download AdAware6 to keep spyware under control...

http://www.wimdows.net/forums/forum.aspx?fid=5&mid=1151 is the complaint
board about eAnthology. Someone from the company (from the looks of it)
is giving a link to uninstall it.

Adaware is at www.lavasoft.de Run this first and see what you have on
there.

Stick with the known antivirus programs......some of these obscure ones
are just not good enough!! The more I see in Google about eAnthology,
the more I suggest you get rid of it. But that is my personal opinion.

Cheers.......Heather

Hey Heather!!!
It says it detects spyware but as soon as I am done
posting here I will get rid of it. Thanks for looking up
information about it. I really want you to know how much
I appreciate your help.
I did those two virus scans todays. Trend and Norton abd
both came up clean. So now I am guessing that the virus
did it's damage and is gone. I am glad it's gone but am
worried about the damage it has done. Anymore
suggestions? I'll check back before my son gets up from
his nap.
Have a great day!!!

Jenna, Heather has offered very good advice regarding spyware etc., and
you should follow her advice. But see if the following helps with your
Outlook Express problem.

Hey Jenna......

Sorry, I was out all day. Looks like you are rid of the virus (but I
have my reservations that you had one called 'Benny'.....seeing that it
is not in McAfee's definition list.

Anyway......dump eAnthology and follow the instructions in that link as
I see on the message boards that it is a son of a gun to uninstall. Run
AdAware and make sure no spyware is left behind......and then Kath or
one of the fellows can help you with your Msimn error.

My area of 'expertise' is malware and viruses......not errors, grin.

Best of luck.....Heather

Hi again Jenna, if you need more specific advice for OE, then either
post the full error message (if any) that you are getting, and I will
keep a watch on this thread, and help all I can, but can't guarantee
when I will be around to check. (Plus I am in the UK, and time
differences are sometimes a pain when you are waiting for responses and
desperate to get things working again!) Or post your full original
problem to a more specific group if OE is the only program giving you
problems.
