I'm hoping someone can help me solve this - it is proving to be very
irritating.

Ever since installing the latest cumulative security update for Internet
Explorer I keep getting this error:

"Explorer has caused an error in SHLWAPI.DLL
Explorer will now close.

If you continue to experience problems,
try restarting your computer."

The full error message is as follows:
EXPLORER caused an invalid page fault in
module SHLWAPI.DLL at 01a7:70a9ba71.

I've looked at the Microsoft support site and have tried a number of
things which seemed relevant, but none of them have made any difference.
Things I have tried include:
- uninstalling the update
- repairing Internet Explorer
- reinstalling Internet Explorer
- replacing the copy of SHLWAPI.DLL in c:\windows\system

The configuration of my machine is as follows:
AMD Athlon based PC running Windows ME (4.90.3000), 1 gig of RAM, 2 hard
discs (40Gb and 120Gb). Have all the latest Windows security updates etc

Any help would be very much appreciated.

James

The most recent Cumulative IE6 SP1 update on this uptodate WinME machine
is KB 824145.
MS03-048: November 2003 Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;824145&Product=winme

My current version of SHLWAPI.dll, the Shell Light-weight Utility
Library, is 6.0.2800.1276, dated 10/16/2003.

I recommend that you confirm that your IE6 SP1 is stable, and, if so,
reattempt the Win Update, after creating SR points and a fresh scanreg
copy of the registry, and backing up the entire OS.

If it succeeds, confirm that you then have the version of SHLWAPI.dll
mentioned above.

Jack - thanks for your help

KB824145 is the one causing the problem. I've since searched on Google
for KB824145 and there are lots of people reporting a variety of
problems since applying this update. A number of people have suggested
that Microsoft are aware of the problems caused by this update and that
it should be fixed with a new patch sometime in December.

I had already tried most of what you suggested. I tried to uninstall the
update again but this time I got an error message saying that there was
an error and it would not let me uninstall. So I repaired the IE
installation, ran the update installation again (even though it had not
let me uninstall) and then tried to uninstall. This time it worked.

So far the problem seems to have gone away. However, the version I have
of SHLWAPI.DLL is the same as the one you have even though the update is
not installed. So it appears that the problem can be fixed by
uninstalling the update - even though when I tried this before the
problem was still there. I'm not really sure what's going on and
hopefully the problem has been resolved. However, it does mean that my
setup does not have the latest update, which worries me somewhat.

Regards,

James

Thanks John - it's not a virus. I ran virus checks as well as
Adware/spyware checks etc. The update was installed from the the proper
Microsoft site so I know it was okay.

See my earlier post - I think I got it sorted (for the moment!)

Spoke too soon - Problem since installing latest Explorer security by J

Looks like I spoke too soon. For some reason I'm getting the error again
and nothing I do seems to eliminate it. Maybe I'll just have to wait for
the next patch/update and hope that fixes it
