Ping Heirloom - ZA Pro & SR

I upgraded to the new ZA Pro as well but, an old bug-a-boo seems to be
back. At least in my case, System Restore points are not generated when
I leave ZA Pro active. This problem had gone away until this last
upgrade. Is this a local problem or do you know of others with the same
glitch? I also find the new version takes much longer to load up and
shut down. You seem to have good contact with Zone Labs so I guess I am
passing the research on to you. Your valued insight would be much
appreciated.

Sorry sced, I must let you down on this one. I did the "clean install"
option, after saving all my settings and have not experienced any of the
issues you mention. Therefore, I am guessing this is an issue with Me and
ZA, as so many in the past have been. (I'm now running XP SP2....quite
happily, I might add). The Zone Lab folks have been very slow to react to
any problems between their software and Me, but, they do eventually seem to
correct them. Additionally, there have been ZA issues that affected only
some Me users. Best bet would be to throw a flag up to the NG and drop an
email to Zone Labs.
In the mean time, I'll keep an eye out for others with the issues and any
possible remedies. IIRC, siljaline was quite active in a number of the past
problems....maybe he will have further info. Best wishes.

P.S. When I encountered the System Restore problems with Me/ZA the first
time, is when I went to a second HD for a complete system backup using
Maxtor Maxblast installation disk. I have retained that train of thought,
but, now I use a 200G partition of one HD to back up my 160G Raid0 boot
drive using Acronis True Image.

Thanks for the reply, I did the clean install as well so the bug
surprised me. It's not that big a deal to close up ZA in order to get a
restore point. I think I will just live with it and see what happens
when I bump up to XP. That is of course unless someone like siljaline
sees this and has some ideas.

BTW, this will become the XP box, I have an older one I built that will
keep ME. Sorta like dueling OS's. <G>

I built this new one for XP and was going to keep the ol' Me box, but, ended
up giving it to a neighbor with 40 bajillion kids. Gave them the whole
shooting match, printer, card reader, scanner, joystick .;.......the works.
Then I find out the old memory was worth more than the whole system!!!
Think it was Noel or Shane and Mike talking about that.....

Thanks Mike, for the well wishes. Things are a bit dicey along the coast
from Texas to Florida....the worst being the states in between. New Orleans
is especially bad. A lot of the area they had pumped out has been flooded
again and a number of levees that had been patched have failed. It will be
a long time in the remaking. Have to wonder about the folks that build a
city in a hole by the shore........maybe we need to import some Dutch folks
to show them how it is done!

BTW, I'll let the neighbors know that before they dump the ol' box, I want
to salvage some parts and will save the memory for you.....surely, the
postage would not be as bad as what you had to pay for a stick of memory.

First let me say how pleased I am that you didn't suffer any lasting
troubles from the storm. My sister and family live outside Houston
towards the coast in Baytown and the last I heard was an e-mail that
they were evacuating several days ago. We are waiting to hear what their
situation is.

As for the old machine, with me it's a case of hanging on to things that
still work. Something like but, not as bad as the "Collier brothers".
Actually, I looked up some places that ask for computer donations,
unfortunately when you read the fine print they are not much interested
in machines under at least a gig rated processor. A friend and I used to
rebuild and upgrade old machines for an outreach program during my past
life in South Carolina. When I came back up north I wound up junking all
the boards, HD's, monitors and 486 machines. Nobody wanted them. I still
have a pile of 4MB memory sticks, even some printer memory that I hate
to toss. BTW, up here they charge to take away computers and monitors
unless you find a town offer for special collections. Heavy metals and
other hazardous materials being the problem.

So, if I can get these old bones to connect and move once again, I think
I will network my old 500MB machine and use it for backing up or storing
images and DTP files from various programs.

Again stay safe. What would we do if the "chili master" were to lose his
grip on the cuisine that has made the drug companies making acid
reducers rich beyond compare. :-P

I noticed the Cheltenham PC World 'Component Shop' had - about a month ago -
PC100 and PC133 SDRAM recently at prices typical of a couple of years ago
(c. £25-£30 for 256MB iirc).

Interesting. A bit surprised at Dixons/PCWorld not charging the same or
more than the online boys and manufacturers such as Crucial. I can only
assume they hadn't realised how much prices have risen for older RAM.

I've been a bit surprised to read that many of the defences were simply
not designed for extreme weather. The sea defences of the Netherlands and
the populated parts of the east coast of England including London with its
Thames Barrier are now designed for something like 1 in 10,000 years bad
weather event following the 1953 North Sea floods when over 500 died in
the UK and 2,000 in The Netherlands. Not a hurricane of course because
the wind speeds aren't that high but North Sea surges which when combined
with a spring tide can be pretty big due to the funnelling effect and if
unchecked would overwhelm much of the east coast of the UK including
London together with huge areas of The Netherlands.

Hopefully for those living on the Gulf Coast, sea defences will be
improved because with Global Warming I suspect we are going to see a lot
more storms like those of this year, not just in The Gulf but worldwide
including here in the UK.

Try looking for the yellow box linux folks, I think in CA, USA. They take
about anything. I do too, but I/m just local, and can only support those in
my town.
