    - Disabling Restore altogether System restore is disabled here. After this, I went to every drive and FAT/FAT32 partition in my system in Win98SE and deleted the "_Restore" folder. Rebooted to ME, and tried to delete the same, won't let me. And, I find the the same folder has been rewritten to all the partitions previously deleted. How do I TOTALLY disable system restore in regards to creating such a folder, and in the ME boot partition as well for deleting? I seldom install software in ME, has no internet access, and image the ME partition weekly. I do not want/need system restore period or its corresponding folder/directory.     - Oleaut32.dll cannot start, suspected trojan involvement ! It all began when I was looking for a utility that can help me search and delete duplicate files on my HD. I found a program called "Duplicate File Killer" from AceZip.net ( www.acezip.net ) which is available from: http://www.acezip.net/dfk185.exe or http://azuk.net/acezip/dfk185.exe and installed it. After the installation, however, all hell broke loose. First, I started to get that "The OLEAUT32.DLL file cannot start" error. Then many programs just simply refuse to start. When I traced it back to the "Duplicate File Killer" program, I found out that I can't uninstall that file either ! ! When I use [My Computer ] > [ Control Panel ] > [ Add / Remove Programs ] to remove the "Duplicate File Killer" all I got is NOTHING. Yes, not a thing ! Later I went online and searched for solutions. Amongst the solutions available was the "McRepair.EXE" program available from http://download.microsoft.com/download/msninvestor/patch/1.0/win98/en-us/mcrepair.exe However, the McRepair doesn't help my situation either. The "Oleaut32.dll file cannot start" problem is still playing havoc on my computer. When I tried to do the "regsvr32 oleaut32.dll" thing, I got the the following error : "LoadLibrary("oleaut32.dll") failed - A dynamic link library (DLL) initialization routine failed" In other words, I am stuck ! So please, HELP !! Please tell me how to get rid of this problem without having to reformat my HD. I even tried to run several anti-spyware programs to get rid of this problem, but all I got is that "Oleaut32.dll cannot start" thing. HELP !! H E L P ! ! ! P L E A S E H E L P ! ! ! ! !     - Help with USB External HD I am having problems with an IOGEAR External HD and their support services have been about useless. Here's some info on the drive... two disk, 20GB, FAT32 (I know I know) I was rearranging folders on one of the drives and left my laptop for a bit, came back and it had hibernated. I got an error message when it was resuming and this was a while ago, so I don't know the exact message...but it was pertaining to jpg files .... when you save music using Windows Media Player it saves the album cover to the folder and these were the files that were showing as missing and/or corrupted in the error messages. Now when I try to get to anything on either drive it doesn't show ANYTHING. There are three hidden files... _Restore Folder which contains a SRDISKID.dat file and System Volume Information folder and a Recycle Bin. I have tried contacting ION with no luck. Is there a way to "restore" an external hard drive? I have access to my laptop running XP Home, a desktop running ME, another running Server 2003 and my work computer running 2000 SP4 (don't have access to Disk Mgmt). I don't think the files are gone because when I check system properties both disks say... X amount GB in use and X amount GB free... and they are the same sizes as what was on the drive before this happened. Any suggestions would be great!     - "All Folders" toolbar (left pane in windows explorer) has gone mis I dont know what happened, but all of a sudden the "All Folders" toolbar (left pane in Windows explorer) has gone missing!! The shortcut is there but it does nothing. I can still access Search, History and Favorites but Folders will not open, it either remains at what I selected earlier (history, search, etc) or the left pane just becomes a grey screen. Same situation when using Internet explorer. I can still use "File manager" however this is very inconvenient.     - Can't unzip A recently-donated HP laptop had a trial version of a program called Superzip installed. The trial period had long ago run out and the program was inoperable. I deleted it . However, whenever I try to unzip a file a windows pops up saying that Superzip.exe couldn't be found, hence no extraction. How can I get Win ME to forget about Superzip? I resorted to Help. It said that right clicking on a Zip file would pop up a list with "Extract" in it. I tried that but there was no "Extract" in the list. I downloaded Wiz and want to use it for tthe time being.     - Floppy disk seek @ boot up etc Can someone help ? I thing some software has changed something in my Me, possibly in the registry. Every time I boot up the system the floppy is trying to read, also when certain applications are opened the same thing happens.     - Re: Mart - "not enough free memory to run this program" Hi Mart I ran Samsung's proggy on C and it showed four errors before it stopped checking with only 6% of the drive done. I ran it three times in all, once getting as far as 27% before it stopped dead in its tracks (arrow keys or "exit" didn't work so I "reset"). I ran the utility on D also (which is a twin Samsung with no problems) to see if it would complete that one. It found no errors and went much further--but locked up at 89%. So I telephoned Samsung who promises service 24/7, and after a long wait got transferred to their tech department--which was closed :'( I then visited the ScanDefrag site and clicked a link there to an MS page discussing what to do when ScanDisk won't complete. I'd already tried turning off the Quick Launch and running programs, as well as Safe Mode--so used the last resort mentioned, DOS--which took thirteen hours but actually finished! :-))) When its surface scan first started up it showed two areas where there were "some bad sectors"-- but the checking went right over them and the end summary was that "ScanDisk found no problems on C." So this means those bad sectors are probably corrupted bits of programs?--possibly Windows ? The errors I'm still getting even after clearing the swapfile (per Noel's instructions) are "not enough memory to run this . . ." (every time I open System Information) and blue screens that shut down OE when I have sound scripts playing in email. And my Me won't make any new start-up disks now--says the A drive is "not ready" although I have no problem copying files over to floppies. Is there anything else I can check/repair/update or is it time to reinstall Windows over itself?     - Updating the BIOS and OEM versions of ME. My computer maker's head of technical support was at one time encouraging me to update my system's BIOS to the newest version. However, he also told me that my OEM copy of Millennium Edition (which came with this computer) is "locked" to this system because they put a code into the BIOS before they loaded the Magnell version of Windows ME onto it. I.e. whenever I format my drive and reinstall the OS, the installation program looks in my BIOS for that code and when it finds it, allows the installation to proceed. If one were to try to install my copy of ME on another computer, it wouldn't find that code and an error message would block further you from going any further. ABS computer technical support maintains that if I update my BIOS, I will lose my ability to install my copy of ME on this computer because the code in the BIOS will be overwritten and they will not tell me how to put that code back in. I presume that one would need to enter the BIOS and key in some kind of "Easter-egg" like series of keystrokes in order to get to the information or be able to re-enter it. I plan to contact the MOBO as well as the BIOS manufacturers and ask them if it is indeed the case that updating the BIOS will do this If this is so, then everybody who uses an OEM version of Windows ME should be aware of this fact. I don't know if it applies to every copy of OEM ME, but it certainly applies to my Magnell version. Certainly in my case, I am prevented from updating my BIOS because of this shortsightedness on somebody's part.     - Audio CD's won't play anymore??? Movies play, but songs won't...I get message that Windows Media Player (or other players) encountered error OxCOOD11F8 Cannot CD using digital playback. When I try to fix via Devices...Tools... Options ... as soon as I click the drive (either the CD or DVD) the cursor zips down to the bottom of the screen and nothing happens. Repeated attempts and other ways in all lead here. I can select the speakers, but not the drives!!?! The CD's do play on an external player, so I know they work. Can you help me?     - Will Not Boot Hi, I hope you all had a great Thanksgiving. I have WinMe Compaq PC. It boots to where icons would be but none appear and the hour glass never goes away. I've removed all expansion cards and disconnected the floppy drive, the CD-ROM, etc. and no change. It will not boot in Safe Mode without stopping at the same place. I've tried step-by-step config without load registry, loading win drivers and no change. Does anyone have a clue as to what I can do to try to get it to boot or what I should do at this point?     - Will ME make SE HDD unbootable? When I set up this machine, I originally installed SE. Many partitions and lots of programs along with transferred data. Had lots of problems, likely due to hardware and the fact that Ultra likely rebadged some RAM from 400 to 266 without changing SPD chip. One morning I find machine rebooted itself displaying VMM32.vxd is missing. Not able to get back up immediately or proficient with DOS, I grabbed a new drive and installed ME. I've been running for some time and seem to have troubles mostly worked out. So I currently have very few programs installed, mostly utilities to kill the dragon, and would like to move back to the other drive. I would actually like to hook it up as secondary and browse around to locate certain files and familiarize myself with its layout after 6 months. Question I have is will that cause any problems that would hamper me from hooking it up solo and getting SE back up and running?     - Comp restarts independent of OS I started having this problem a month ago. I had Xp on my PC and the computer kept resatrting every 3-4 hours or so for no apparent reason at all. Sometimes when I was online, it would happen sooner. I formatted my hard disk (only C:) thinking it was a virus problem and tried installing Xp again. But the PC would restart everytime at a particular point suring the setup. Tried installing linux, and encountered the same problem. Now I cant install any OS on my system, and hence cannot use various hardware diagnoatic tools either. Cannot be a heating or dust problem as I had kept the thing open for about a month or two before the problem began and used to clean it regularly. Not a virus problem either? Can the presence of viruses on other partitions affect installation of the OS? Could it be a hard disk problem? Or a RAM problem? Based on what I have said that is.....i.e, mostly it restarts at a particular point, and this particular point in time keeps coming closer to the reboot point as the days and weeks progress. Now it restarts almost every 5 minutes or so. And by the way, it doesnt restart if I keep the computer on in the Bios setup screen or at an early point in Setup (like when it asks you for format or so..). I have expressed this numerous times before; but no one wishes to believe this for what ever reason. While I am typing (yes as great speed and accuracy; but I admit I am a poor speller; but I *DO* have and use a spelling checker from my Office 2003 Pro) I can for limited times put my physical pain out of my conscience mind and relegate it to the nether regions of my subconscious. I only ever leave a group for one of three reasons. One if my family (that doesn't read nor post to Usenet) is attacked verbally or with illegally obtained pictures. Two if I become bored with a group. Three and most importantly if the denizens of a group are particularly asinine and they start to pull me down to their level. On point three, I don't mind their being asinine or haranguing me or calling me all sorts of names; but I abhor my family being brought into the fray. Sometimes however I do find myself being pulled down into the cesspool of depravity and asinine which I will NOT allow and if I find that to be occurring I will remove myself from said group. Shane: You need to get a grip and realize that if you play around in these news groups you ARE going to sooner or later get bit by someone that doesn't care what they say or how they say it. You put me in mind of a young child that when their parents put presents or something in a closet and then tells the child that there are monsters in the closet to keep them from looking, believes in the monsters so strongly that if the parent opens the door and pulls out a present you would not open the present for fear of something jumping out and grabbing you. Well either that or you are just trying to put me on about your believing in my having some sort of powers. Never fear I have no powers at all that any other human being doesn't also have. In real life I am a regular sort of person other then my being physically disabled almost to the point of needing a wheel chair; but even though my doctors say I should be in one will continue to walk as long as I can until I start falling down too much from my legs going out from under me. I don't tell you or others in this group this to garner any sort of sympathy or as any type of excuse for my behavior; but rather as a point of fact. You try and use your affiliation or knowing Hells Angels like a weapon; but in fact if they knew you were doing so, they would take a very dim view of it. I tried to tell you before, I have nothing but respect for almost all Motorcycle clubs, and of yet I personally have not come across one that did not garner my respect. We have a bikers rodeo here every year, and when our local authorities tried to stop the rodeo; because they did not think it looked good for tourism, I and several others and a lot of bikers took up petitions to prevent the town council from stopping all local biker rodeos. Whether or not you choose to believe it I do volunteer and help out the two local biker clubs as much as my disabilities allow. I use to ride myself back when I first got out of the military and was, well sort of wild and wooly and did some things I am not proud of; but I did and I have to live with that. Like you I also quit smoking, I did it cold turkey after smoking for over 26 years and I have not smoked now since September 11th of 2000. I use to be on one of the most physically addicting pain medications out there called oxycotin or as some say *hillbilly heroin*. I was on 60Mg 4 times a day with 2 percoetts in between for breakout pain. When I told the Veterans Administration that I wanted off of them and to take something else they told me that I had been on most all of the pain medications that they had. I had to go through the patient advocate to get my doctors to listen to me and then was hospitalized and went into a coma when I tried to do it cold turkey because I refused to take any pain medication. After which I relented and allowed them to prescribe methadone and before you get any wise ars ideas NO I have never used heroin, methadone is also used for the long term treatment of chronic severe pain. I take 40Mg of methadone 4 times a day and if you know anyone that has anything to do with the treatment of chronic pain they will tell you that 40mg 4 times a day is a hefty dose usually reserved for those with terminal cancer. You and others seam to think I am faking my physical disabilities, well if you knew anything about the Social Security Administration here in the USA you would know that that is as close to being imposable as can be; because they usually require you to have one foot on a banana peel and the other in the grave before they grant you a disability check. It took me three years of test and MRI's and CAT scans and X-Rays and trying to get rehabilitation therapy and such to do some sort of work; but my disability is one of those that the physical pain can actually knock me out when it gets to a certain point I start getting stomach cramps, and then start seeing sort of little fire flies out on the periphery of my vision and then the next step is that I fall out unconscious. I don't tell you about my pain and such to get any type of sympathy; because the truth be known that is the absolute LAST thing I want or need. My family try and do everything for me and would just have me sit in front of my pc all day and night; but I can't even do that; because I can only set for a limited amount of time and then have to move. And finally to you Shane, I know you are reading this; because I know human nature. Heather: Well about all I can say about you is you deserve to be in a group where everyone is EXACTLY like YOU, that can nit pick and pull apart each others posts, instead of just understanding that some people don't like to take the time to try and be perfect in there writing. I am a published poet, although it is true it has been some time since I was published; because I am the sort that I submitted one poem one time just to prove to *myself* that I was good enough to be published and after that it didn't and doesn't matter (see I can use the correct one when *I choose*)to me whether or not I get any more published. To me writing poetry or music or even prose (I should really submit some of my stories though) is a personal thing that I do for my *own* enjoyment and I have neither the desire nor inclination to share it with the world in general or anyone in particular through publishing it for general consumption, although I do have a limited number of my poems online just because well I really truly don't know why I put them up. Oh and the typing medal in High School, my family moved around a lot and when we moved that year it was close to the end of the year, and when the class took the test I beat the next best typist by 20Wpm; but the teacher told me that the girl that was next fastest and accurate had planed to win and all her friends and such so I agreed to let her have it; because even back then medals and such for accomplishment or what ever didn't matter to me, to me it was enough to know I was the best in the class. Just remember in a typing test you have NO NEED to spell correctly because all you are doing is *looking* at the correct spelling and grammar and punctuation and then typing what you see. It is not a test of spelling,grammar or punctuation; but rather a test of manual dexterity and I guess because I learned to play lead,rhythm and bass guitar in my early teens it helped with my dexterity. I was however the ONLY guy in the typing class. I have related the events of my almost winning the typing medal in high school before on Usenet and if you like you can check and see it hasn't varied; because I learned a long time ago that aside from it being the morally right thing to do, unless you have a photographic memory (which I don't) you need to always tell the truth; because if you tell the truth you have no need to remember what you said; because the truth is always always always. the same. To the rest of the Group: I have tried to create a character on Usenet and I have succeeded to a degree. How many others can say that for what ever reason someone creates web pages about them? Whether those pages be making fun of the person or what ever. To instill a feeling in someone strong enough that they feel compelled to create a web page takes a certain gena say quah (French spelling ?) To get someone to write a pros story about them takes some doing. Long after I am gone on to the other side people will be reading about my adventures on Usenet who here can say the same? No one, now some will say that they would not want to be remembered as such; but to be remembered in what ever fashion is better then falling into obscurity. Even though it matters little to of such thing, I found it an interesting challenge to see if it could be accomplished. I have progressed the theorem to the point that I came to this news group and those that had never seen a single post from me, took the *word* of those that had and joined in the games of attacking me. Which only went to prove to me the success of what I had set out to do. Well originally I started out on IRC to do like wise with the Moof Monsters thing; but this worked out better. Regardless of what those on some groups think I am a very competent computer repair person and also quite good with software and virus removal. I am directly responsible for at least one computer shop here locally being opened; because I trained the owner. He had attended a pre A+ certification class at the local University branch; but after successfully completing it, he told me that had I not trained him that class would not have prepared him to open his store. He and other local techs still call *me* when they have a problem. Some will say *well then get off your ars and go back to work* which I would gladly do, if I could find some work either from home, or that would allow me to take my pain meds and when the need arise to go and seclude myself in a dark, cold room to lay down with a heating or ice pack until the pain subsided enough to return. The only degree I have is a TV Repairman Certificate I received while in the military from the Sears Institute of Technology. My military records however show my job title as Electronics 26T; because I repaired main frame computers as well as avionic bays and other electronic test equipment. IOW, I tested and repaired the equipment used to maintain electronics. I did not work on TV's I worked on VTM's Ohm meters, oscilloscopes, signal injectors and other various and proprietary equipment for the military. For a short time just prior to my coming home from Vietnam I *was* reassigned up country to Pleiku as a Morning Report Clerk; because I could type very well and accurately. You see a morning report can contain exactly ZERO mistakes. The morning report sends the information up the chain of command as to whom reported for duty, who died, who was reassigned for TDY (Temporary duty) and such, maybe you can see why they tolerated ZERO errors. On one occasion when taking distribution to battalion I wound the jeep out too tight on the gravel road along side the ammo bunkers and I rolled the jeep and was knocked out for 3 days, and was at hospital for 2 weeks; but as I have said before when offered to return to the states on what was called a blue pajama flight I knew because of being a morning report clerk that would entail someone else coming to Vietnam 3 months early because of my having 3 months left on my tour. I opted to just tuff it out and returned to my unit in a neck and back brace with pain meds. I guess that is why I have had and am having such a hard time getting service connected disability; because of my not taking the earl hospital flight the records got snafued and it has taken me until last year to track down my old operations safety officer which at the time was still working for the military as a civilian over in Bosnia as a Flight Safety Officer. He sent me a notarize statement; but now the Veterans Administration says that my injuries are "Acute in nature, transitory with no residual effects", IOW it knocked the piss out of me then but now they say it has no lasing effects. Even though my doctors say that the likelihood of the bone spurs in my neck that are trying to pierce my spinal bundle, occurred 25-30 years ago the VA says the jeep accident has no bearing on my physical disabilities. The offered me a non-service connected disability that would pay almost two times as much as what I am receiving from Social Security, if I accept it that would curtail any future attempts at service connection and service connection would pay almost three times what non-service connection does and it would also pay for University for my children. In any event, as I said in the subject line, I will NOT read any replies regardless of what I said previously; because I will be turning off my bots that scour Usenet looking for mention of my Sugien nic; because as a therapeutic pain management tool Usenet is turning out to be counter productive as well as counter intuitive. I have decided to put more energy into my music and poems and prose as well as my volunteer work with the church, motorcycle clubs, food banks, after school latch key kids safety, crisis center phone sitting, well it is too long a list to put down and it is doubtful any here will believe it; because I guess I have done so good a job of creating the Sugien persona, that when I try and tell what the real life me *is* doing no one cares or believes. It doesn't bother me however; because my life does not and never has revolved around those on Usenet. I have tried to be a help; but on the groups that know Sugien I was blocked at every turn and although people emailed me to say thank you because they did not want groups to harangue them for well I guess for their taking advice from me that helped them. So good by, so long, no need to reply, unless you just want those here other then me to read it; because I am unscrewing (yes I know) from this NG and putting more time in more rewarding ventures.     - kernel32.dll error when opening Windows Explorer, My Documents etc Whenever I try to open Windows Explorer, My Documents and My Network Places, I get a kernel32.dll invalid page fault error.     - Display colour & size help- error in MMSYSTEM.DLL Hi, I hope some one can help me out! I turned on my computer this morning after a normal shut down last night... When I turned it on the colour was set to 16 with large icons. I changed it and restarted it and it just popped up the same. I tired afew times with the same resul;t... when it restarts it says " Error: Rundll has caused an erro in MMSYSTEM.DLL. Rundll will now close." Could not fix the problem, so I tired to do a system restore, which I have never done. Tried to do it for 3 different days, and each time when the computer restarted its said "Rstrui has caused an error inn KERNEL32.DLL. Rstrui will now close."     - Can't Access Registry I had two viruses: Winlog and Winsupdater. System Suite 5 removed them. Then I tried to go into the registry using regedit to remove any instances of the viruses from there and a DOS window popped up with a message box on top of it saying "The program tried to execute an invalid instruction. Fault Location: 0C12: 0EE8 Interrupts in Service: None" I used System Suite's Registry Fixer, but there weren't any keys listed for the viruses. I used Registry Magic and it found 2 instances of each virus. I deleted them (I suppose), but I'm still having the problem. How dangerous is this and how can I fix it? But I am having trouble finding out if Windows ME is capable of supporting this - with or without additional drivers or software.     - WIN ME runs SCANDSK when booting up Must I let this scan run to completion? It is scanning over 1,131,000 sectors and takes forever (days maybe). It states that it is due to a bad system shutdown. I have disabled the power consumption features to not turn off the monitor, hard drive, etc.. I suspect that the pc has some malware but can not copy a2square from a floppy to the hard drive to scan for malware. How do you bootup into SAFE MODE?
