For the last couple of days all the pictures I get from my scanner e-mail
really BIG. They are .bmp, do I need to convert them to .jpg? How do I do
that?

By "big" do you mean their dimensions, or the size (number of KB) of the
files?

If the latter, yeah, you've got it! Bitmap files (.BMP) are just about the
biggest (least efficient) way to store an image. A .JPG version of the same
image is going to be *much* smaller file size.

The usual way to convert them is to load the file into a program that
recognizes different formats, then do File | Save As and select the new
format. Paint (which comes with Windows) will do this if you have Microsoft
Office installed. (Otherwise it only works for BMPs.) Alternately, I
strongly recommend the excellent image viewer and image-management freeware
program IrfanView -- see http://aumha.org/freeware.htm for download links
and information.
