I have and HP Pavilion 8705 (a or i - can't tell?) w/Win
ME. I have had difficulty loading anything extra on this
PC due to low resources. I started with 128M of ram
(factory), and then subsequently added another 128M, then
ultimately another 512M - totalling 768M of RAM. I would
expect that this would be sufficient to have several apps
running at the same time. Heck, when I run just Quicken
2003 and AOL 9.0, I'm down to 35% in system resources.
I've attempted to cut down on the # of things running in
the background (using msconfig), yet I shouldn't have to
do this, or should I? Is ME (using automatic memory
settings, instead of me setting the virtual mem settings)
that much of a memory hog? Do you know if I have not
properly xn'd my memory? A jumper? It does acknowledge
the entire memory at start up, and in the system screen.
I just don't know what else to do, other than use this as
a boat anchor. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Bill,

You appear to be confusing "resources" with memory. On all Win 9x systems
resources are fixed and have nothing whatsoever to do with the amount of
memory that you might have installed. You might want to have a look at Jim
Eshelman's articles on these two subjects at
http://www.aumha.org/win4/a/memmgmt.htm and
http://www.aumha.org/win4/a/resource.htm which helps explain the differences.

You do however mention that you now have more than 512MB of RAM installed.
Have you limited vcache to just 512MB? If not then that could be contributing
to your problems. For details of this problem see MS KB 253912 - ""Out of
Memory" Error Messages with Large Amounts of RAM Installed"
(http://support.microsoft.com?kbid=253912). The reason is that allocating more
than 512MB of RAM to vcache will exhaust all available upper memory addresses
and thus prevent them being used for other purposes. This problem is easily
fixed as follows:
To limit vcache, open system.ini and add the lines
[VCache]
MaxFileCache=512000
Note that this will still mean that all memory is available to applications
but is simply limiting the amount used as virtual cache memory.
