    - leave on or turn off?? My father-in-law has a 5 year old computer and was told by a technician that it is perfectly fine to leave the computer on 24/7 and there will be no risk of damage or other problems resulting from that. What do all of you think? I was taught that it is better on computer components if they are given an opportunity to cool down and that Windows was designed to be rebooted at least once every day. When I purchased this computer they did not provide the ME disc for me and now I am trying to install a 1394 - 4 port Firewire card so I can run a Zip 750 MB Firewire Drive, and I don't have the drive I need or the ME disc to install it.     - Tired of Viruses Ok, here is a new issue for me, but by far the most frustrating. I have run all 3 of my virus programs, all say I'm clean, yet when I go launch my home page (yahoo), it loads for a second, then switches to "about:blank" (some search page virus). What's worse, is when I go to MSN to check my Hotmail, it will let me sign in, see that I have 12 messages there, then quick flash to that "about:blank". I have not been able to get my email in days, nor will it let me get to any "Help" or "Contact us" pages at either MSN or Yahoo. I continually edit the information in the registry to remove any mention of "about:blank", yet even with system restore off, it does not save may changes. I have 2 home computers hooked-up to a wireless network=20 via a Linksys router. I use the network for Internet,=20 printer and file sharing. One computer is a desktop HP=20 with Win ME; the other is an IBM laptop with Win 98. =20 Recently, I have not able to use the file-sharing=20 feature. (The Internet and printer sharing capabilities=20 still work O.K.). When I try to access the desktop files from the laptop, I=20 get the following when I click on the shortcut: “The drive or network connection that the shortcut ‘HP C=20 Drive.Ink’ refers to is unavailable. Make sure that the=20 disk is properly inserted or the network is available and=20 then try again.” When I try to access the laptop from the desktop, I get=20 the following: “The shortcut ‘IBM Drop Box.Ink’ refers to a location = that=20 is unavailable. The location could be on a hard drive on=20 this computer, on a network, or on a different computer on=20 your home network. Check to make sure that the disk is=20 properly inserted, or that you are connected to the=20 Internet or home network, and the try again.” When I click on O.K., I then get the following: C:\WINDOWS\NetHood\laptop on Ibm refers to a location that=20 is unavailable. It could be on a hard drive on this=20 computer, on a network, or on a different computer on your=20 home network. Check to make sure that the disk is=20 properly inserted, or that you are connected to the=20 Internet or home network, and then try again. If it still=20 cannot be locate, the information might have been moved to=20 a different location. Both computers are on when I try this and it appears the=20 network is up and running, as I am able to access the=20 Internet and printer from both computers. Any suggestions would be appreciated.     - NOD32 Error Message Using the scanner in NOD32, I encounter the following error message in blue letters: "Error occured while scanning MBR sector of the third physical disk. Error reading sector." I have two disks, one with four partitions and one alone. C,E,G and F are part of the partitioned disk and D is by itself. Which is the third one and how can this error be fixed, if possible. Or can it be ignored, since it doesn't cause any problems at all? My Registry Mechanic doesn't detect anything wrong! Thanks.     - Putting Icon on Start Bar RH side What is the right hand side of the Start Bar called? And how does one put an icon on the right hand side where the time, volume control etc are? I've done it several times before but my mind has gone completely blank now. Incidentally, I could just drag and put one on the LH side which is easy. What actually is the difference between the two.     - EEPROM checksum error Finally found an error message. My system boots and after a couple of seconds totally freezes. Already tried scanreg /fix from DOS and rebooting.     - power cut during defragmentation I was defragmenting my hard drive using Speed Disk from Norton Utilities 2002 when there was a power cut. When the electricity came back on the computer wouldn't boot to Windows Me, it advised me to start in Safe Mode, and when I try to do this it thinks for a moment then goes straight to "it is now safe for you to turn off your computer. I used the Norton Utilities CD to run Disk Doctor without going into Windows, and it found a few problems, most of which I had had before (missing shortcuts etc.) and I pressed Y to fix these. It also found that the File Allocation Tables didn't match, and I pressed Y to fix them as well. It told me to insert a floppy disc to record the changes it was making. It proceeded to fix the problem but it ran out of space on the floppy disk and tried to back out of the repair. It then had a problem backing out as well. Sorry, but I don't remember what it said exactly, I was getting pretty flustered. I ran Disk Doctor again and it found thousands of lost chains (or something like that). Now, when I switch the computer on I am told that I have got an invalid system disk. I'm sorry I am not very clear, I realize now I should have written everything down. I hope that someone has the time to work out what I mean. There are some pictures on the computer that I don't want to lose. My computer is made by Dell, it has nearly 100GB hard drive which was about 30% full. Tag: Paint Tag: 247853

    - Problems after critical update 840315 System working fine, installed 840315 using Windows Update, no errors logged successful completion. Immediately after try to use windows explorer context menu (right click) and system hangs with explorer not responding. Must reboot to recover. Also any attempt to drag and drop in explorer locks system as does right click on desk top icons. Ran virus scan spybotsd adaware... all clean. Reloaded registry from old backup... no change, Safe Mode also has the same symptoms. Reloaded ME without format but the problem persists. Step by step Windows did not finish loading on the previous attempt. Choose Safe Mode F5 = Safe Mode I then click F5 and shut down in safe mode. After about 10 seconds I restart and all is normal.     - System Restore problem I used to get the "cannot update %1 %2" message while rebooting. I asked for help and got it using the ATTRIB - H -S -R etc method. Then I get the "cannot create a restore point . Restart the computer etc." The help I got from the Microsoft site used to work. That is Method 2, Scanreg /restore etc. Now that doesn't work either and my System Restore sits there like a white elephant. When I go to Registry Editor, it opens in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/System/CurrentControlSet/Services/VxD/Vx DMon. In the right pane the following is listed: (default) (value not set) FirstRun "N" LogDir "c:\_RESTORELOGS" StaticVxD "VxDMon" SystemFileProtection "Y" SytemRestore "Y" TempDir "c:\_RESTORETEMP" VxdCfg "C:\_RESTORE\VxDMon.cfg" VxdDat "C:\_RESTORE\VxDMon.dat" I don't know if any of that means anything but I thought I'd tell you anyway.     - missing network, system icons from Control Panel These two controls suddenly stopped working - double click yielded nothing. Following instructions I found in the MS knowledge base, I renamed the netcpl.cpl and sysdm.cpl files. This caused the icons to disappear. So far, so good. I used the system config tool to extract these two files from the CABs on the hard disk (in SAFE mode as the instructions again required). I then moved the files to the \windows\system folder and rebooted in normal mode. No new icons. In a command window I tried control netcpl.cpl and get nothing, same for the sysdm.cpl control. Other controls work correctly when executed from the command line. I checked the control.ini file and these two controls are not in the "Do not run" section. Whenever I try I get the following message, "Streets & Trips 2001, an un-named file has bad format". As a result I am unable to change my ink cartridge. It has been suggested that I should remove and reinstall that CD.     - keep getting atl.dll error messages hello. I am here just hoping that someone has an answer to possibly help me. For a couple of weeks now (seems much longer) I have been trying to figure out why I am getting the following error message: "cannot run unicode version ALT.DLL on windows 98,please install the correct version." I am really confused about this. I have no idea why I am getting this message or how to correct the problem. Does anyone know what I should/can do?     - Renaming .dll files I'm trying to solve my Internet Explorer 6 installation difficulties, and one of the procedures requires renaming certain .dll files. I follow the instructions by starting the computer in safe mode and when I try to rename a file, for example "actxprxy.dll", the computer tells me the file cannot be renamed because it is being used by windows.     - Add/Remove Programs Tool (2) Look - I've had two answers to this query BUT the respondants have NOT READ THE POST. The operative word here is that NO as in NONE as in NADA programs are showing up in the tool. This does NOT mean that SOME of them don't show up... NONE of them show up. So trying to do a fix because all of the programs names are longer than the allowed string isn't going to produce a solution, thank you.     - folder name change 2x now computer wouldn't boot up. Just before windows loads, screen says: can not write to hard drive, then it lists various files as being missing or corrupted. I used a start up disk to get to my hard drive and saw that the windows file was named wineows. After renaming this file back to windows, everything loads fine. What would cause this to happen?     - Can't get into the DOS mode at startup If I hold CTRL while booting, I get a choice of four startup modes. Starting in MS-DOS is not one of them; unfortunately it's the one I really need. I made the mistake of deleting vmm32.vxd, so I can't start. I see the following message: The following file is missing or corrupted: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\VMM32.VXD Type the name of the Windows loader (e.g., C:WINDOWS\SYSTME\VMM32.VXD} This is followed by the c: prompt. Before deleting vmm32.vxd, I made a copy of it, so it's somewhere in the laptop. Stupidly, I didn't record its path. Unless I type the exact path to the file, the above message merely repeats. Even though I see the c: prompt, it doesn't respond to the DIR command or any other DOS command. It's looking just for the path the vmm32.vxd. So I want to boot into the DOS mode so I can use the dir command to find vmm32.vxd. I've looked for someplace I can d/l vmm32.vxd for ME; can't find one. Any leads? Thanks for your help. Go to Control Panel | Add/Remove programs \ System Setup tab, Accessories
and remove/re-install Paint.
