Hi Tom......

I downloaded the now non-beta Firefox 1.0, but am still wavering because I
see on their Forum that they never fixed the Bookmark problem.

I also have two older versions here that are unopened......9.2 and 9.3. How
do they stack up against the new 1.0??

Naturally all you are going to see are complaints on a forum.....so thought
I would ask you before I install one of the above. I did find one *solve*
to the bookmark problem via the forum and could use that if I run into the
same problem......which I see is bound to happen.

Cheers....Heather

Hi, Heather,

I recently installed the 1.0 GA release, and prior to that I had the 1.0
PR release. I didn't use any of the 0.9x releases. Fortunately, my
bookmark sort wasn't affected in the update. I had used the bookmark
sort plugin that we talked about a while ago. I've not tried to install
the plugin using the technique to get it to install in the 1.0 PR.

The update was very transparent. In reading the release notes, there
are a number of "under the hood" fixes. I would recommend the 1.0 GA
(non-beta) release over any of the previous versions. It's very stable,
and I like a number of the features that it offers. I rarely use IE
anymore. But for the occasional site that requires IE, there is also a
plugin that allows you to open the link in IE. The plugin adds a
command to the context menu in Firefox, when you right-click on a link,
giving you the option to open the link in IE. And, of course, you'll
need IE for the Windows Update site.

I'll look into the bookmarks issue. I recall in the release notes a
mention of a fix to the bookmarks. I thought it corrected the sort
problem, but perhaps not from what you're seeing from the complaints on
the forum.

HTH.

Regards,
Tom

They won't sort properly!! And people that complain about it are having a
hard time getting the point across. I will attempt to show you.

In IE, I created several yellow folders at the top of the Favourites List,
such as *Most Used Sites*, or *Antivirus Websites*, which have anywhere from
10 to 25 links in them. Below that are the usual alphabetical links to
websites. And I have a rather large amount of them.

Firefox will NOT sort them that way. The Yellow Folders are all over the
place in Bookmarks.....in no particular order. When you go into Manage
Bookmarks and try to rearrange them, they look like the are in perfect
order........but when you go back to the Bookmarks spot in the browser, they
are not.

Hope that is clear.....often on the Forum, people who don't have this
problem, just don't understand what we are talking about.

Hi, Heather,

There is a "Sort Bookmark" fix in the 1.0 GA release indicated in the
release notes (see the link for additional info), but I don't think it
corrects the issue that you raise and that I've seen. If you install
the latest release, open the Bookmarks Manager, highlight ALL items in
the left pane, and then choose the view that you want from the View
menu. I recall someone indicating in one of the forums that it was
necessary to do this to get a full sort. Firefox won't sort all
bookmarks from the root. This was an issue in previous releases, and
from what I can tell is still an issue in the latest release.

Heather,

You're welcome. Check my other post in this thread related to the
bookmark sort. If the sort doesn't work by selecting all items in the
Bookmarks Manager, we can walk through installing the plugin again. It
worked for me and sorts the folders alphabetically. The nice thing is
it did with one click. There have been quite a few requests to the
author to update the plugin but no response as of yet. Let me know how
it goes.

Cheers,
Tom

Have you tried right clicking on the drop down bookmark menu and choosing
"sort by name"? I just did that and it sorted everything by name,
alphabetically.

Alias,

If I understand correctly, you're able to sort the links in individual
folders in this way. This hasn't been an issue. The problem has been
to sort all the folders within bookmarks, not the links (children)
within the folders. As Heather mentioned in one of her posts, even if
the folders appear to be sorted in the Bookmarks Manager, they don't
display as sorted in the browser. So, if the folder sort worked for
you, then perhaps the issue has been resolved in the current Firefox
release.

I was able to do it in the individual folders and the general folder list.
Of course, being used to it not being sorted, now I can't find a thing
easily!

The individual folder lists, however, had to be done one at a time.

Heh.

It really is a good browser. Getting RSS feeds makes the bookmarks like

Sure, blame us Yanks. I'd like to go to BC, see ?
Just noticed there's sort orders listed in the View option. Why not hit
that then drag your folders where you like them. Just got through doing
it here with Firefox and IE on my new laptop :)

Hi, Heather,

I wanted to let you know that I have a copy of the sort bookmarks
extension that you can install with FF 1.0. There's no need to go into
about:config to get it to install. The .xpi file has been modified so
that it will install correctly, and you can install it locally from your
hard disk. I tried it, and it works as advertised. The nice thing is
it sorts everything with one click. So, if you get around to installing
FF, and the bookmarks continue to be a problem, let me know and I'll
send you the file to get them sorted.

Cheers,
Tom

Thanks Tom......I may take you up on that as I am close to opening FF 1.0
again. Knowing that your fix will work helps a great deal. Out of
curiousity, what does 'xpi' stand for?? And are the extensions all named
differently in FF??

Cheers.....Heather

Heather,

You're welcome. Let me know if you need the plugin. XPI is a file type
used to install many of the Mozilla/Firefox themes and extensions. The
file is basically a ZIP file that, when opened by the browser utility,
installs a browser extension (or theme). This particular file,
sortbookmarks0_5_1.xpi, contains two files, a JAR file and a RDF file,
which contain the code for the extension. There's a fairly broad
offering of extensions for FF that you can use to customize the browser
for your specific needs. Take a look at the following link if you have
a chance:

https://update.mozilla.org/extensions/?application=firefox

Regards,
Tom
