Hey Mike,
Out of the blue, I got a System Checkpoint this morning......haven't
changed anything, so???? I'll keep you posted on if they continue or
not......are yours still down?

Still no check points here. The machine has been barely touched in the
last few days. I still see just the two FS cabs in the ARCHIVE folder but
am now seeing 289 CPY files in the TEMP folder. I'm not sure how far this
should be taken as I'm not even 100% sure I was seeing automatic
checkpoints being created on that PC before the ZAP update was installed.
Thinking about it I'm also a little intrigued as to why SR was apparently
reset around the time I updated ZAP.

As I mentioned earlier I've not really done much with that box for ages so
really really must try and give it some TLC and see if I can get things
running again properly.

Heirloom:
In the past I had automatic checkpoints every second day.
For the last week or two I didn't bother checking and when I looked today,
there weren't any, so I created one, because things are going fairly
smoothly right now.
Does the maitenance scan have any influence on SR?
Or maybe the trendmicro scan?
As far as I know it never did before.
I am about to be cut off.

Sounds like you lot have "Zapped" SR with ZA Pro...
Oh the joy of Zone Labs software... <end rant>

Harry,
System Checkpoints (auto Restore Points) are created after every 10
hours of computer 'up time', however, the computer must be in an idle state
for two minutes after that time. If this criteria is not met, then an auto
SR point will be created once every 24 hours after the aforementioned 2
minute idle time. You will also get SR points from Windows Auto Update
installing a package or any installer package that uses InstallShield 6.1 (I
think) or later.
Statemgr, I believe monitors this situation and I can't remember the
file that times the 2 minutes of idle time, but, if the two minute timer is
interrupted the timer begins afresh.
If you have anything running that would prevent this 'idle time', then
yes, it would prevent a System Checkpoint. Things like SETI at Home, virus
scans, and possibly something in your scheduled mtce could cause this. One
way to find out, after 10 hours of up time, shut down everything you have
running (excluding Explorer and Systray) and wait a few minutes......you
should meet the auto System Checkpoint criteria and a point be made.

Thanks, heirloom, I'll work on that.
Maybe my interrupting the pc health scheduler had something to do with the
lack of auto restore points.
When I was sending my last post to you, I was interrupted and the mail
stayed in the Outbox until I logged off and back on again.
Ther were several error messages telling me about expiration and termination
and somthing about NNTP, I believe.
Whatever was wrong, it seemed to have cleared up on its own.
All in all things are allright for the time being, anyway.
Wait - it's doing the same thing again right now.
What could that be?

Harry.

Mike, would it be worth trying a straight 'uninstall' of ZA (easily
re-installed) for a day or three and see if SR points start again?

Must admit that I had no choice but uninstall it from my XP box and have
never had any of the previous 'niggles' that ZA 'apparently induced' since.
(Never was too happy with their ZA True Vector Security Engine - used to
cause weird 'Proxy Desktop' issues - now all-gone!)

As I suggested elsewhere : The moral of the story being - if you 'suspect'
ZA of causing an issue, uninstall it and see if things improve - then
re-install and see if the problem stays away <g>

That's actually what I've done Mart. The Win Me box doesn't really need
ZA or ZAP as it's behind a stateful firewall on the router. The main
reason for having it on (and on my other boxes as well) is that it allows
one to keep track on what is accessing the net and to stop as necessary.

For now all I have done is uninstall ZAP and rebooted the box. I'll wait
and see if an automatic checkpoint is created at sometime today and if not
reset SR and perhaps give the box a quick once over.

Still no SR checkpoint on the Win Me box despite removing ZA Pro. I've
just realised that it is running Digiguide and am now wondering if that
might be what is stopping the checkpoints being created.

May I remind all that on Sept 27, 2001, in ...windowsme.general, Mike M
reported how to change the two RegSnapShotInterval entries in
HKLM\...\StateMgr\..., to change the period between SR's auto checkpoint
creation. By altering it to ca. 1-2 hrs, one can greatly speed up the
testing process.

I suspect that Mike can quickly find one of his previous posts to better
describe what is needed.

For me, at that time, the Intervideo, Inc., Win DVD player, launched at
startup, was stopping the auto creation.

No need. Within three minutes of terminating Digiguide an automatic
checkpoint was created. Have now reinstalled ZAP and will await
developments.

BTW DigiGuide is a UK based TV guide (http://www.digiguide.com/).

Well, if it is of any consolation, I believe my problem may have been caused
by the install of the new printer (about the same time as the ZAP upgrade).
I found a process running (ezprint.exe) that would kick in about every 20-30
seconds. It only used 1-2% cpu, but, may have been enough to stop the
timer. I have now got two System Checkpoints since unchecking the process
in MSCONFIG.
Heirloom, old and really thunderbumping here

Now that's what I like to see happening to two of our nicest guys ... <vbg>
And no chile sauce was needed this time.

I wish Figgs' XP installation failure was as simple to resolve.

Why didn't we think of this sooner, heirloom?
Would have saved Heather lots of trouble.
Still not too late for her (unless she hates to part from her current
machine).
How about it, Heather?

Heirloom, old and XP might be fast, but, it won't outrun

Got my next System Checkpoint this evening while the box was idle.....looks
as if I owe ZAP an apology. Been steady since taking <ezprint.exe> out of
the startup axis.
Heirloom, old and getting mine

You got that one right, Loon!! No way would we part with that treasure!!
Now if I could just pry the keys out of Ron's hands, I would be a happy

As to buying a new machine, I think that comes after shingling the roof, a
new furnace, dental work, and a muffler system for said Jag. Oh.....and
painting the house. You could chip in on that one. (G) And our holiday.
I think there is something wrong with that scenario!!

Good news, indeed, as it suggests that my two new working WinME machines
