    - Restack TCP/IP? Win ME on Compaq Presario will ping IP's but not URL's. ISP Comcast says winsock issue but can't help me because of no OS cd that I need to restack TCP/IP (no idea what that means). I suspect Java.ByteVerify!exploit trojan and Java.Shinwow.Q trojan in .jpi_cache that E-trust cannot clean, even with SysRestore disabled. Haven't scanned in safe mode though come to think of it.     - unable to update 1% Following problems with the KB891711 download, I notice that another download on the same day hasn't "taken". It still shows up on the Windows update site as a critical update. When I try to install and after the reboot, i get the unable to update 1% 2% message. I have tried several times (it's KB867282 cumulative patch for IE6 Service pack 1). It does show up in the add/remove though as installed as does IE6 service pack 1.     - MSVCIRT.DLL & MSVCRT.DLL Hi, after the installation of Office 2000, when I run Microsoft FrontPage for the first time from the Start->Program menu, I got the error message: "A device attached to the system is not functioning" and "The MSVCIRT.DLL file is linked to missing export MSVCRT.DLL-??_U@YAPAXI@Z". The other Office programs run well without any problem. I also got the same error message when I run the Norton Optimization Wizard of Norton Utilities, while it has been run normally once before.     - safe mode in WME I was helping a friend clean up their computer, and wanted to defrag. I could not get it to restart in safe mode.     - Printing in Word I can print a document from Word if I use the standard times new Roman font but if I start adding color or a creative font or text box, borders clip art after hitting "print" everything freezes as it tries to spool. The computer is rendered useless and I have to hit control/alt/delete and lose all my work. even if I save it restart and try to print it happens all over again. I can print from excel or any other program with no issues. I don't know if I have the wrong printer settings or once I was told that there could be a corrupt font - I had deleted it and all was fine but since then I had to do a recovery and it may have returned but I have no clue which font it was.     - Bluescreen on game exit Whenever I exit a game, I get the blue screen "An error has occured. To Continue... . Error: 0D:0000:00010000" Pressing Enter takes me back to Windows properly. But then the ATI systray icon goes away, and going into Display Properties>Advanced causes crash again. So I tried reinstalling the video driver; didn't help. Card is ATI AIW7500.     - Explorer does not display files for C:\ Hi A friend of mines PC is running ME and for some reason, when looking at the root of C: drive in Explorer, the right hand pane does not display any icons or file details. This is ONLY happening in the root of C: drive and the contents of any sub-folders, suchas as c:\windows or c:\program files displays ok. When C:\ is selected in the left-hand tree-view, the status bar at the bottom will display "58 objects" and if I press Ctrl + A, it'll say "58 items selected", so I know there are files there. When viewing c:\ with a command prompt, "dir" will display all files as expected. I've tried changing the view in Explorer from Icons, List, Details etc but this doesn't have any effect. Is this known behaviour of any known virus? I've heard that desktop.ini can be used to force Explorer to not display files in a given folder but cannot find any documentation regarding this on MSDN.     - Followup on ? of Overwriting ME... Turned out to be video card/drivers. Replaced video card with another make. Everything works normally now. But I would lose System restore points after several days. Opening various programs would only show a outline of the window. Ctrl,Alt, Del and End Task worked, then right back into the program and it would work without a problem. Never could get videos to play. Could not update video drivers either.     - kb891711 and netgear wg511 Installed the kb891711 update on my laptop running winme. Really bad system instability, so I backed everything up and proceeded to factory reinstall my o/s. I uninstalled all of the unwanted compaq utilities, and installed all winme updates from microsoft site. As soon I went to install driver v.3.0 for my netgear wireless card, system crashed. In order to get the system to reboot, I would have to stop the kb891711 process in the task manager before the wireless card driver app started. I've had to uninstall the kb891711 for now...     - Dial-Up network adaptor problem. Hello, my Toshiba satellite 2800-S201 laptop is having dial-up network software problems. When I try to dial into my ISP I am be able to log on and get past the userID and password authentication process, but right after the dial up window would minimize I would get a "this page cannot be displayed" message." I know I was connected to the ISP server because the network connection status shows a small number of bytes (429 sent, 645 received) as being transferred and received. Anyway I asked someone what might be causing this problem and their suggestion was to delete the TCP/IP protocol and the dial up adaptor because either might be corrupt. I followed these directions found in the troubleshooter help guide of Windows ME under Error 645: To delete all connections On the desktop, double-click My Computer, and then double-click Dial-Up Networking. Right-click a connection, and then click Properties. Make a note of all of the settings on the various tabs, and then click OK. Right-click the connection, and then click Delete. Repeat steps 2 through 4 for each connection. To remove all dial-up adapters Open Network properties in Control Panel. In the 'The following network components are installed list', double-click a dial-up adapter, make a note of all of the settings on the various tabs, and then click Cancel. Click the dial-up adapter, and then click Remove. Click OK to confirm the removal. If the list includes additional dial-up adapters, don't restart your computer until you repeat steps 2 through 4 for each adapter. If there are no more dial-up adapters in the list, restart your computer when you are prompted to do so. To remove Dial-Up Networking Open Add Remove Software in Control Panel Click the Windows Setup tab. In the Components list, double-click Communications. In the Components list, clear the Dial-Up Networking check box. Click Yes, click OK, and then click OK again. When your computer finishes copying files, restart it. Then I reinstalled Dial-up networking by following the troubleshooter help guide again. (All of the ME CAB files are located on the laptop's hard drive in the C:\windows\options folder): To reinstall Dial-Up Networking Open Add Remove Software in Control Panel. Click the Windows Setup tab. In the Components list, double-click Communications. In the Components list, select the Dial-Up Networking check box. Click OK, and then click OK again. When your computer finishes copying files, restart it. Then I re-made the network connection to my ISP in the Dial-Up networking - Make a new connection section. When I went to launch IE 5.5 the modem dialed and connected to the ISP, the dial up window minimized when the ISP authenticated my userID and password but Internet Explorer again reported that 'this page cannot be displayed'. I am keying in the correct url - www.yahoo.com so I'm at a loss to understand why the software won't complete the task of loading a web page. Sorry for such a drawn out question but I've spent several hours fiddling with this and hope you can guide me to a positive outcome. Any help with this problem would be much appreciated.     - A Question About Reinstalling Win ME From The Hard Drive I loaned my PC to my 15 year old nephew for several weeks while I was out of town. When I returned, I found that he decided to "do surgery" on some of the system files and utilities. Specs: Compaq Presario 5WV232 20gb HDD 750mhz AMD Duron MMX 320mb RAM 8mb AGP NVidia TNT2 graphics card SoundMax Digital Audio I have found that he hacked the registry to pieces in areas, the PC crashes randomly, various errors (while running/startup/shutdown), system restore has been completely removed (not disabled but deleted entirely), DirectX 9.0c is buggy, a display driver that is only partly compatable (there appears the be two drivers installed in Add/Remove & there is many display errors etc.), wrong audio driver (wavs play but nothing else, even with all codecs installed), the list goes on and on. I have went through and extracted many of the missing system files from the install cabs and reinstalled many programs but I cannot revert the registry using "scanreg" or "regedit" because the backup files were deleted and the scanreg "/fix" command line does nothing for the problem. I have also tried to reinstall the correct drivers. But all of this is rather useless because the registry entries still keep these changes from being fully effective in many ways. I feel that I could possibly salvage things but my main concern is that System Restore has been completely removed. I don't know exactly what files are needed from the Cab files in order to extract them to their proper locations. In any case, I would like to do a reinstall but my original Windows ME disks were destroyed by my kid's dogs a while back <g>. I have run through only the first steps of doing a reinstall from the hard drive (via c:\windows\options\install\setup.exe) to ensure that all of my Cab files are present and complete. Everything looks good. My question is this, does the reinstall from the HD delete everything and leave you with a clean install of Win ME or does it restore the OS only? Seeing as how all of my programs still function correctly (except where the audio and/or display creates conflicts) and for the sake of not having to start from scratch, can I reinstall ONLY the complete OS from the Windows\Install folder without wiping out everything on my HD? If this is possible, are there any special steps needed (for example, uninstalling WMP 9.0 and IE 6.0)...or if someone could direct me to a reliable source of info on partial reinstalls from the HD. I have searched the net on the subject but all I can find is info on complete reinstalls by formatting and then reinstalling using the original disks.     - continued freeze-up problem I figured I'd give myself one last shot at this. About a month ago my computer started freezing up. It wouldn't reboot with ctrl/alt/delete. I had to manually turn it off and then on. I had recently installed Registry Mechanic and TurboTax. I have since uninstalled those programs. I still had problems. I am fastidious about running Scandefrag, Adaware, Spybot, and PCcillin (my antivirus/firewall program). Up until today I had no problem running the above but this morning both the virus scan and spybot locked the computer up. I couldn't even finish the virus scan in safe mode. :( Adaware was able to complete it's run and found no spyware. I took the tower to a repair shop last week and they said it was SETI@home program. They uninstalled it and the locking up happens less frequently but still happens as evidenced by the above paragraph. Possibly related...if I have my monitor set to power down after x number of minutes...it does but it won't come back on unless I manually reboot. This is only in the last week. So what the f*$@^% is going on. Hardware, software? Power resources problem? There is lots of memory available. Yes, I use windows ME. This computer is 4 years old and until now it's been fine. I am looking at Dell's catalog but thought I'd let you guys have at it. What would you do? As a last resort, would you wipe the hard drive clean and reinstall everything? Or just buy a new computer?     - Windows Installer/ Active X Problemo! Hey everyone, My computer is definitely in the hole. of course, I've got Windows Me. I've scan disk'd, defrag'd, and virus scan'd all along. in all honesty, I take really good care of my computer. As of late, whenever I start-up or access a program (other than desktop icons or quick launch) a windows installer pops up and won't go away until minutes (and various attempts later). After it tries installing and making really loud noises, it says a various path should be used, yada yada yada. And NOW to add insult to injury, I can't do an online virus scan, log into MSN messenger or download anything from the internet. I've tried adjusting security levels (etc) and have concluded that ActiveX isn't downloading applications. And of course, I need this to fix the Installer problem and of course, to update my virus scanner, do an online scan and download ANYTHING. Any advice or help would be appreciated!     - BSOD and BSON, so removed 'buggy' Mar 8 05 security update kb891711 (WinMe) On Mar 9 2005, windowsupdate successfully installed: Security Update for Windows Me (KB888113) Mar 8 2005 Security Update for Windows Me (KB891711) Mar 8 2005 Before fully loaded, IE6 and Moz cause 2 types of BSOD or BSON (Blue Screen Of Narcolepsy = cycles thru "press any key to continue") Error: 06: 09CF: 00000776F Error: 0D: 0967: 000000E24 Error: 0E: 0187: BFF8E648 Error: 0D: 09CF: 00000B995 Error: 0E: 0187: BFF8E64B To end each of these cycles, I restarted computer. ---- Other net apps? Lucomserver (NAV update) and Xnews load fine, but I didn't try OE. ---- Computer gets to the internet to via LAN router. After disconnecting the Ethernet, all net apps successfully loaded and "successfully" made attempts to connect to the net (google/tool/bar clicks worked in IE, Moz) During all of this, I saw that kb891711 is in the 3-Finger-Salute list. (Ctrl + Alt + Del) and BSON and Win3 style err screens, gave clues: msgrvr32 vsmon (vsmon is an exe of ZoneAlarm free) krnl386 Now reconnected to Ethernet, I restarted computer, and all net apps ran OK, reached the net. (Why now?) But when I clicked an EXE in a folder on the LAN, BSONs cycled again. And, the computer wouldn't start without entering BSON cycle. Eventually I caught the computer during a startup with the 3 finger, and was able to kill zlclient, nav, sbserv (sbserv shows only during startup), etc from the list. Then I uninstalled kb891711 (Control Panel, Add/Remove) Computer ran fine for the rest of the evening. ----- epilogue I used Qfecheck.exe after uninstall. Shows only 3 dll, zipflfd, dzip32,dunzip32, probably because I disabled the zip ability of windows find. I think Qfecheck is supposed to verify registry entries match file versions of updated files. Googling shows that the equivalent (?) of kb891711 has been updated to w2k and XP for a couple months. And since win9x is now "unsupported", I predict this fix will never be fixed.     - Unable to access any wisconsin government or education websites??!! For about two weeks, I have been unable to access any wisconsin government or education websites: www.wisc.edu www.wisconsin.gov www.wisconsin.edu and others I use windows me and a dial-up connection through highstream.net. I wrote to highstream and asked them if they had changed anything. Their response was to "winipcfg /release_all" and "winipcfg /renew_all" and reboot -->> which did absolutely nothing. Does anyone have any idea why I am unable to access these websites?? The errors that I get are either: "can't find" or "cannot find server".     - Scandisk & Defrag won't complete I followed the instructions given me by Mike Maltby step by step and got into safe mode using MSConfig; and Scandisk worked okay but Defrag stopped at 57%. When I ran Scandisk again in Normal it stopped at about 20% and Defrag again at 57%. Any further suggestions would be of great help. Thanks Tag: Outlook Express could not be started Tag: 262162

    - ICON problem I default to the "Photo Editor" when I bring up a .jpg file. All icons for jpg file are now the icon for "Adobe Acrobat" even though when I click on a .jpg file it is brought up with "Photo Editor". I've tried refreshing the icons and every thing I know how to do, and it still stays the same. If I use "change icon" on a shortcut it will change to the correct icon for that shortcut. Any Ideas?     - system restore I receive the message "System Restore cannot run until you restart the computer. Please restart the computer, and then run System Restore again" I have searched for the file wininit.ini and tgcmd.exe and "ACCESSED DENIED" and have not found them. Some how by mistake I removed "my network places" from windows desk top via
windows setup in install/uninstall programs in control panel. Needless to say
when I tried to open outlook express it would not work. In addition to the
message "microsoft express could not be started because MSOE.dll could not be
loaded. I have 1. reinstalled my network places 2. reinstalled address book-
one post suggested I needed it 3. Disabled norton virus protection and live
update

I still get the same message. Help!!

I got an automatic update reminder: Cumulative Security Update for Outlook
Express 6 Service Pack 1 (KB837009), Installed it and like magic, OE works
again.

Don't know why, but if it worked for me, it could work for someone else.
