Oh boy. Your hard drive is probably cooked. Unfortunately, there may be
nothing you can do but install a new hard drive. Of course, you've probably
lost all of your data unless you backed it up. Don't worry, it's not your
fault! First, you can try putting a boot disk
(http://home.earthlink.net/~montybarker/bootdisk.html) in and running
SCANDISK at the A:\> prompt, but I doubt it will do any good.

Another option would be to try and start up your computer
with the operating system CD. That is, if you have it.
It may prompt you to boot from it, and if you can get it
to at least come up, take the opportunity to backup your
hard drive before moving onto any other fixes. If all
else fails, you can attempt to remove your hard drive and
load it onto a buddy's computer and have him back up your
data for you until you can resolve your computer issues.
Then transport the data back onto your hard drive. If the
hard drive is functioning, it's best to clean off your
system and start fresh, and dump Windows ME and install
XP, if you don't already have it.

Unfortunately, that wouldn't work because the Windows Me CD is not
bootable. Plus, if the hard drive is already dead (I've been through that
myself), there may be no way to get the data back other than sending it in
to a data recovery center and spending big bucks.

Chances are, the hard drive itself is damaged, so putting it in another
computer would do no good. If "OdeNeHo" hears any strange clicking or
grinding noises like I did when my hard drive died, there is probably no
hope in rescuing the drive other than sending it in to a data recovery
center. When my Hard Drive died a couple of years ago, I ran Ontrack
DiskFixer from a floppy (a ScanDisk clone), and it ran for hours and
finally said "Severe File Allocation Errors. No Repair Attempted." The
computer was 6 months old at the time, and it was still under warranty, so
the whole new hard drive and installation kit from Compaq didn't cost me a
dime.
