Java 2 SE, v1.2 & v1.3 vs Microsoft VM
Java 2 SE, v1.2 & v1.3 vs. Microsoft VM: is there a difference between the
two besides an obvious version date? Does the Sun product replace the MVM?
I have the Java Web Start console on my desktop.
There are three Java entries in IE Tools/Internet Options/Advanced; should
they be checked or unchecked with this updated Java product? Or is the new
Java version only for developers? If so, I'm not one and have no need for
this program. Are both equally functional for surfers?
Thanks for clarifying this.

freezing & errors
My computer "freezes" at least every other day--I get
error messages often on a variety of things
including "system resources dangerously low" and my MS

trouble again. I have heard ME causes problems and XP or

problems?

ScanDisk Lock-Up
Saturday afternoon I was tooling along in Windows ME doing the little things
I do everyday. I had a few programs open, was online (dial-up) and creating
stationery in OE when suddenly everything froze up solid. CtlAltDel
wouldn't work so I flipped the switch on the surge protector, waited half a
minute, then flipped it back on. I expected to have a run through ScanDisk
and when it came up it had all my drives in its list--the 20 GB C, the 8 GB
D, and an external drive I keep backups on--an 80 GB Maxtor that I acquired
new last year. ScanDisk went through the C and D drives with only a few
restarts--but when it was half-way through the G it locked up, so I had to
power off again and start over.
The subsequent ScanDisk attempt locked the computer up promptly, so I
powered off again and unplugged the G drive from its USB port. Once more I
powered up and ScanDisk behaved normally--but now I can't have G plugged in
at boot-up because ScanDisk loads to check it and before it or I can do
anything ME is locked up again. However, if I plug the external in after
boot-up, a single-pane Explorer window opens for it and I can double-click
and view what's on it; I can also access its files from my graphics
program! But if I close its initial window then try use to Windows Explorer
or My Computer to browse it the 'puter locks up solid with the G drive busy
light on.
The external drive has about 10 GB of files on it. I don't run anything
from it--not even installs--nor do I link to its files when I use them in
stationery, etc.--but I'd saved a couple of jpgs with normal names to it
that day. I've since played with the piece of stationery that seemed to be
the troublemaker, but nothing's gone wrong--and both the C and D drives are
behaving in WE and My Computer. I haven't installed any new programs since
May 8.
What can or should I do about this? I haven't tried a Restore although I
have a choice of two available from Friday, because I wasn't sure if I
should have the G drive plugged in to do that. Is there any way I can get
ScanDisk to finish its job?? Any help much appreciated!

No Windows - Noel
I couldn't reply to the response you gave me on my first
post. Nothing shows up on the Safe Mode other than those
two files from McAfee. I'm using Microsoft ME and I've
installed a 3rd party DVD using the USB connection and a D-
Link Wi-Fi card (which was all working until...I tried to
remove the kazaa icon in the tray). System crashed and
only rebooted to the screen without any icons. I tried
using the System Disk, but the DVD doesn't respond. I
changed the sequence from Hard drive to CD in the bios but
that didn't work either. I can use the F8 button to get
to the normal, safe mode, or step by step. Here's step by
step:
process the sytem reistry?
create a starup log file (bootlog.txt)
enable SMARDRV disk cache
loading and initializing IFSHLP.SYS sriver
load all windows drivers
vnetsup.vxd
ndis.vxdjavasup.vxd
vnetbios.vxd
vredir.vxd
dfs.vxd
PELMOUSE.VXD
MRTRATE.VXD
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\VSHINIT.VXD
TURBOVBF.VXD
msmouse.vxd
I then get the mainscreen, ms logo sound and the McAfee
logo. When I close the program, all I get is the 2 McAfee
programs - that's it.

Neither of those programs should be loading in Safe Mode
(they belong to
McAfee AntiVirus, IIRC)
what shows in Safe Mode?
What OS? - if There's no floppy and no CD, how do you load
new
programs/data?

Explorer won't open
After I downloaded a critical update for Windows ME a few
days ago, I began getting the following error
message "Explorer has caused an error in SHLWAPI.DLL.
Explorer will now close." This now occurs every time I
try to click on My Documents, My Computer, or access the
Control Panel from the Start button. Explorer will no
longer open so I can look at my files. I know it's there
because it will still open up from the Explorer bar on

except for hot keys linking to Explorer to list files. I
also get an error message similar to the one above but
with SFG012B.DLL when I click on Start, Search for Files
or Folders on my Desktop.
I can access the Control Panel and Recycle Bin via the
Explorer bar on Internet Explorer, but if I try clicking
on the Recycle Bin icon or the Control Panel via the Start
button, I get the same SHLWAPI.DLL error message.

Windows update problem
I recently had a run in with coolweb and have finally managed to remove the
little bugger. I am now having a problem running windows update. This is the
message I receive when I try to update, any ideas on how to rectify this
situation would be most appreciated:
To install items from Windows Update, you must be logged on as an
administrator or a member of the Administrators group. If your computer is
connected to a network, network policy settings may also prevent you from
completing this procedure.
Note If you are running a Windows 2000 (except DataCenter), Windows XP, or
Windows Server 2003 operating system, you can run the local administrator
account on your computer without having to log off and then log on again.
To run as the local administrator in Windows XP or Windows Server 2003:
Click Start, and then click All Programs (or right-click Windows Update if
it is available).
Right-click Windows Update.
Click Run as on the menu that appears.
Do one of the following:
Enter the password for the administrator.
Enter the user name, domain name, and password of a different user account
that has administrative permissions on this computer.
To run as the local administrator in Windows 2000:
Click Start, right-click Windows Update, and then click Run As on the menu
that appears.
Do one of the following:
Enter the password for the administrator.
Enter the user name, domain name, and password of a different user account
that has administrative permissions on this computer.
If the option to run as the local administrator is not available:
Click Start, right-click Windows Update, and then click Properties.
Click the Shortcut tab, and then select the Run as different user check box. Tag: Oops! Tag: 243442
