    - Scanreg error I was gone for a few weeks and my wife used the computer. When I got back and booted, I got "Scanregw has caused an error in Scanregw.exe" and then instructed to restart. I did, same thing. My wife said that message came up before but she didn't know why. I the fix and restore switches and got same error.     - Windows startup partition drives C:\ , D:\ and E:\ opens upon startup I running OS ME and upon startup my partition drives sometimes open. I also have Norton Antivirus set to scan up startup. Is this true and what is the recommended minimum and maximum sizes if I specify them myself. The system has 256 Meg Ram but 16 meg are eaten up by onboard video.     - Programs running in back ground How do i keep files and or programs from running all the time? I do a ctrl alt delete to get rid of them because they use up so much memory,ive got 320 meg of ram. When i delete everything and do what i need to do shut down and turn the system back on i have to delete everything all over again its really a pain in the ass.     - diagnostic programs? I have had my HP with ME for a couple years. It has been acting up. It will suddenly go back to the HP INVENT screen for no apparent reason. Also the screen will freeze occasionally and I have to reboot. I am thinking maybe the drivers are starting to corrupt? Is there a diagnostic program I can download that checks this and other problems that might be causing the problems. I have had zippo luck with HP eventhough I paid for an extra 3 years warranty.     - Error message on bootup Windows ME Hello all, you're looking good today! I have a problem. I recently wiped an old Pentium 3 Hewlett-Packard with its recovery disk, and it has been working great ... until... just this morning, on bootup (after it asks for password but BEFORE the desktop appears), I received the Blue Screen O' Death. It wasn't a fatal crash, as I could hit enter and be taken into Windows, but none of my startup programs (Norton Anti- Virus, ZoneAlarm, et. al.) had loaded.     - Wrong File Associations in Outlook Express 6 Attachments When I receive email with attachments, regardless of the type of attachment- be it text, wav, jpeg - it is always identifed as opening with "Image Preview" in the 'Save Attachment' dialogue box, thus rendering anything other than jpegs and bitmaps unopenable.     - Hidden Files I have some about 40 hidden file in C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files folder which are not visible in windows explorer even with option of show all hidden files. Only can be viewed in third party explorer. It appears that most of them are somesort of spyware cleanedup by ad aware. I think they should go to bin? Thanks for any advice.     - ME major problem. I'm COMATOSE. I am trying to fix a peoplepc IBM based computer for a friend. I seriously suspect this computer is virus laden. I was told it was slowing and hanging before it was brought to me. At first boot, I could not get past the loader 'dots'. I tried the F11 command to start the computer to the partitioned clean drive. I then selected the fdisk choice to fdisk and reinstall all files. Probably my first mistake. The fdisk utility got to about 3 percent and then warned me of stack issues. I was told to restart as the fdisk action was halted. I restarted. Now I can't even get the computer past the IBM logo. This computer has no boot disk, so getting to an A:/ prompt is not possible.     - Using System Moniter Utility the Kernel:Processor Usage is 100% I have problems powering on my P4 Win Me. It comes up with Error has occured. Press Enter tp return to Windows or CTRL ALT to restart. Either will cause a black screen with the egg timer on solid and can not move it using mouse. Only thing i can do is to hold the power switch to switch it off. If i do get it started, once in every 20 attempts, the System Moniter Utility shows Kernel: Process Usage at 100% constantly. All my programs when i run especially internet over broadband are very slow and soon stop completely. this has only just started occuring last weekend after i was using ebay and a couple of popups came up which i tried to close and the whole thing shut up shop and hung.     - Corrupted Windows Loader Hi - My laptop siezed while I was working on it yesterday and when I re-booted it started up scan disk automatically. There were a number of errors, which I let it fix and I then proceeded to finish my work and shut-down. The next time I turned it on ME did not load - instead it stated that the Windows Loader was either missing or corrupted. The path stated was C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\VMM.VXD To continue it asks me to type in the name of the Windows Loader - arrrggh, please help as I have no idea how to continue, as anything I type in DOS langage doesn't work.     - Windows update and the blue screens Hi there! I=B4m having this strange situation: everytime that I try to=20 do Windows update (it doesn=B4t matter if I use the=20 Option "Windows Update" on the menu Start or if I visit=20 the windowsupdate site), my compute crashes and it shows a=20 blue screen, with some errors (OE: 0028: e0690cb5 OD:=20 0246: 014F47FB).     - Media Player I installed many updated in early June to my ME. The update for Media Player is STILL running. I cannot install any other updates b/c of this still being in progress. I cannot uninstall Media Player via start- >control panels -> install/uninstall b/c there is no option for Media Player.     - Loss of free disk space due to .cab files on WinME My mother has WindowsME on her machine. Her hard disk is more than half full with cabinet (.cab) files. This is really bogging the machine down. The only definition I can find for these files says that they are system restore files created by WinME. It seems to me that something is wrong here. I have read on WinME support websites that the System Restore feature should only allow a max of 12% of you hard disk to be used for Restore Points. Will disabling System Restore delete these files? Is it safe to delete these files manually and will Windows let me do so? Could .cab files be created by applications other than System Restore?     - Mouse pointer drifting I wonder whether anyone can advise me. Over recent weeks I have been getting increasing problems with the mouse pointer drifting to the top or bottom of the screen, and more recently there being a delay of about 2 secs. in responding to mouse movements. This is intermittent and does not seem to coincide with other specific and obvious programs or processes. I have a Toshiba 3000 Satellite laptop running WindowsME, 128 + 256mb RAM, Pentium PIII, Belkin Mini Optical Scroll Mouse connected by USB. I have done the following to try to correct the problem: cleaned mouse lenses tried mouse on different mats and surfaces tried a standard mouse (still occurs) updated display and mouse drivers from manufacturers websites reduced hardware acceleration adjusted mouse speed settings in control panel rebooted frequently (problem still there after reboot) I have the feeling that this is something to do with the OS or drivers but any advice on what else to consider, or how else to diagnose this problem would be very welcome! I'm working on a gateway computer and was wondering if the onboard video
(S3) is using the CPU for video processing or if it has it's own computing
power and is only sharing Ram. Would I see a huge performance increase by
installing a video card. I'm sharing 16 meg of 256 Ram on an athalon 1200
