Noel-
I followed your recipe, but still no luck.
From the Install New Modem screen: "Windows will now try to detect your
modem"
Then- "Windows did not find any new modems attached to your computer"
"To select your modem from a list, click Next"
I selected, in turn, each of the listed 56K modems from the list, but none
would install
...Suggestions ?

You say that you have a multi boot system so you should be able to
identify the modem from one of your other operating systems. Once you
properly identify the modem go to the manufacturer's site and get the
proper drivers then point the hardware wizard to the proper .inf file
package.

Re: Modem problem persists-Problem solved by Steve

John-

I did identify the modem and went to the Creative Labs site to download the
.inf file for this model. However, it was not available for ME. I
downloaded the one for Win 98, installed it but no luck. Finally, I
purchased a noname brand from a local electronics store for $6.99 + tax,
installed it, booted up and "walla", ME detection (without using the
installation CD) ! It turns out that the installed modem name is one I had
previously manually selected from the ME database but didn't work. What can
I say? So now I have a noname fax/voice modem that works for ME, 2000,
and XP.

Thanks to all who took the trouble to respond to my call for help - 6 by my
last count.
