    - two windows when emailing I have a annoying problem that comes up whenever I compose a new email from my default email, which is Earthlink. It is a problem that comes up recently. Whenever I CCP someone's email address, and click on 'compose new email' on my Earthlink email server, I get two windows instead of one.     - Windows ME all downloads hang during install Using latest spyware, malware programs, etc. When microsoft downloads are attempted, program downloads a 2 MB file then takes 3 hours to install then hangs. I tried to download flash player, began download then just hangs without any messages. Am using reputable ISP on a dial-up. 10GB hard drive avail with 128MB ram. I add/remove programs, Windows ME does NOT show up in the add/remove window. How can I re-install (if necessary)or remove for upgrade if I can't see it?     - computer on or off I have a laptop computer that I have been powering off ever since I got it. But now is reconsidering whether to leave it on whenever I get off the internet. I get tired of pulling the power chord out of the power strip. And it may not be saving my battery. Overtime I Power up the battery shows low power. I tried reformatting the C: Drive as per Article ID 221829, and then Article ID 66706, but when I try format c: /s I get a message saying that Windows doesn't support this type of formatting any more and I need to make a startup disk, which I obviously have otherwise I wouldn't be here.     - Explorer cannot communicate with modem Hi Everyone, A snag that has me baffled. My modem will dial-up and connect to my internet provider; no problem there. The problem is: whenever I try to activate anything to the internet I receive this message, "Explorer has caused an error in <unknown>. Explorer will now close." "If this problem continues reboot."     - msgsrv32 (not responding) When I start ME in normal mode, the machine hangs and in the Close Program dialog box is "msgsrv32 (not responding)". I have disabled all the start up items in msconfig so only Explorer is running but I still get this error. The error never happens in Safe Mode.     - For What It Is Worth I've had a continuing problem with my HP Pavilion system in that it would halt and/or go into Restart on its own especially after being on web sites or games that had a lot of graphics. Everything I read said this was indicative of a heat problem, power problem, or video card problem. I ruled out heat and power so I ordered a new video card. While waiting for it to arrive I learned enough cruising these MS NGs to check the memory status in the BIOS. I found that one of the two 64M chips was not working. Replaced the defective chip with a 128M chip and my system is running fast and I haven't had anymore random halts/restarts.     - Hibernate and Stand By Hi. Does Anyone AT ALL know why the Hibernate and Stand by functions have simply stopped working? I recently had to reformat my hard drive (first time ever) and all was well for a while until one day I couldn't use those functions. I also just installed, hoping in vain, clearly that the problem will be fixed, a Registry Repair tool (AOS), but running the software didn't solve the issue (also clearly, registry and the power save functions are not related). So again, can please anyone tell me whyhave they stopped working and how to fix it? It's not a big issue, I can live without those (before the reformat, both had worked just fine, never a problem with them), but I'm afraid they are a sign of something bigger brewing under the surface just waiting for an opportunity to strike...     - compatibility issue Background: I have a piece of software that is supposed to unlock a GSM phone from the phone company it was originally used with. The original company is in the UK; I am in the US, so third party unlocking software is needed to get the phone free to link to a new network. This was not a free phone and is useful because it is a tri-band unit usable in most countries. Problem: The program, called client.exe will not open properly. It reports Error Imported 0x02F2 API not found I reported the problem to the vendor, who responded oddly: "The software is compatible, although it is better to use a Win XP computer. We have had some customers experiencing trouble opening the file, usually the problem is solved when trying it on a different computer. If you still can't open the file with another computer, please email us." Can anyone clarify what the problem is? Running around trying random computers does not seem to be a reasonable solution. Is this software really not ME compatible? I can eventually get access to an XP machine but I would really like to know what the compatibility issue is and whether the vendor should be chastised for his advertised claims of "Windows compatible." Since I periodically format and reinstall WinME what files would I need to copy, on my existing system, should I want to just throw in my own reinstallation disk. I would like to eliminate going back to MS for updates and patches each time I reinstall. I use Windows ME. Both Symantec products seem properly installed on my PC and the NAV 2004 appears to be updating and scanning with few problems. No viruses are infecting the PC. This is confirmed by an online TrendMicro scan. An online Security Check via Symantec shows the firewall working properly and indicates that a current AV program with updated virus definitions is installed. Since I've successfully installed several Smantec products over the past few years, I am somewhat baffled by this notice that the manufacturer of the PC had failed to turn off a setting prior to its leaving the factory. When I looked into the Microsoft article referred to at that Symantec article, it only addressed an issue in Windows XP. My OS is windows ME. Further complicating matters is another notice from that Automated Assistant that my NAV 2004 program files are not up to date. It recommends running Live Update to remedy this. However, when I run Live Update, I'm told that all the relevant symantec files are up to date. Can it be that the Symantec Automated Assistant is simply misleading and doesnt quite work with Windows ME, or is there likely to be some major problem in my NAV 2004?     - direct connection to laptop I can not get the Win/ME desk host to connect to the Win95 laptop guest . I am using Laplink cable at the LPT1 port. Clients,protocol and microsot network is the same on both machines. The resource settings for the ports are different. Does that matter? It worked before, then something changed. On the desk at systems/ports it does not say any thing about the cable. Under modems it did know the cable was there but not right now.     - Critical Updates and Decreasing System Stability I've been faithfully installing Windows'ME Critical Updates for some time now and my system seems to be getting more and more unstable. I now get a blue screen crash almost every day and sometimes more than one a day. They are randomly erratic having no particular pattern or cause. Critical Updates appear to consist of an endless number of security updates to protect against hackers or deviant web sites accessing your computer. I'm not aware of there ever being an attempt to hack into my computer nor am I aware of anyone I know having had that experience. With the millions of web sites and hundreds of millions of users online everyday, the probability of getting hacked must be pretty low (especially for an on and off dial-up connection). The endless succession of Critical Updates never seem to offer fixes for known system bugs, which I would appreciate. I'm wondering if there isn't a connection between the endless procession of Critical Update patches and the increasing instability of the operating system.     - Allowing ActiveX in IE hangs when sites require it Hi. If I set my IE Internet Security settings any lower than HIGH then on any website that requires ActiveX, my computer hangs. I am able to go to any of these sites when set to HIGH. Clearly the sites do not work. Typical example is MS Windows Update. If you need more info, I can let you know what I am running.     - Remote Desktop Client question(s) I am trying to configure a Windows ME PC to connect with a Windows XP-Pro desktop at work. I configured a VPN Connection to connect to my work LAN without any issues. However after downloading and installing the Remote Desktop Client, and configuring the client, I can not connect to the remote desktop. In fact I can not connect to any of the desktops in my lan. I am entering the correct login information (username, password, domain) in the client logon window. And it's not that the login information is wrong, it's that the ME system can not see the remote system. For a sanity check, I am able to connect without any problems from an off site WinXP system so I know the desktops are fine.     - Should I run Norton Systemworks 2004? More than a month ago I was running Norton SystemWorks 2004 on my computer with Win98 when my hard drive died. Granted, the drive was over four years old and had run past its warranty period, but I've heard a couple of rumors that this program is not good to run with ME. Just installed a new PCI modem and ME is not auto detecting it.

I've tried:
- Loading modem drivers from the Modem CD
- The ME modem trouble shooting process
- Uninstalling and reinstalling drivers
- Device Manager, modem, properties, more info
- Moving the modem into different PCI slots
- checked IRQ settings etc

The PC is only showing Com 1 and Com 2. Com 1 for mouse. It claims Com 2
is for modem, but can detect it there.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Hmmm... Maybe you need to try the modem on another system to make sure the
modem even works. ???

It should pickup "Virtual Serial Port COM3/COM4.
It appears that your physical COM2 is free while during
the set.
Try the modem setup by disabling the COM2 port in
BIOS. If it picks up the modem port COM3 WinMe
should recognise it.
