Missing files, Default partition, re-installation after replacing HD

I have been having two partitions on my Pentium IV system; each on a
separate hard disk. I got an error message while re-installing ME that it
could not be done since there was not enough memory, even though 60 GB out
of 80 GB on one HD and 30 GB out of 40 GB on the second HD was free. Since I
have 1MB RAM, I think I do not need to worry about that aspect. As a
relieving measure, I replaced the 40 GB HD by an 80 GB HD, piping the
contents from one to the other by Norton's Ghost software.

In the process, I have created six problems for myself:

1) As the BIOS ends, I get an error message saying <WINDOWS
ROOT>\system32\hal.dll file is missing, asking me to install it. I do not
know how important a file it is and can I just copy it from someone else's
computer and paste it in Systen32 Folder. Sounds totally unbelievable.
Anyway, the Windows processing continues, if I just press the Escape Button.
What is the correct way to restore that file?

2) At the end of the BIOS processing, I now get three instead of two
options for opening Windows: XP, ME or Default. I of course select ME or XP.
But I want to understand if the presence of the third option is eventually
likely to create any problems for me. In the MY Computer configuration I see
only Floppy Drive A, Hard Disks C and D, CD ROM Drive E and CS Writer F. Do
I need to get rid of this Default Option? If yes, how?

3) As soon as XP opens, there is an error message saying Entry Point
Reinitialize Critical Section could not be located in the Dynamic Link
Library Kernel32.dll.

4) No application in XP can now be opened since a System Shutdown
within 60 seconds is initiated by NT\Authority\System

5) I have RegClean in both partitions and have attempted to fix any
errors which might have cropped up but that has not helped. The XP
installation disk does not permit re-installing, except by reformatting the
HD which means that I lose all the upgrades of XP, the security patches, the
virus patches and even important drivers for video cards installed using
very poor instructions from manufacturer of the Video and Audio cards.

6) ME still gives the error message saying there isn't enough memory
for re-installation.

How can I get the system back to its original shape and smooth functioning?

Some random thoughts:

> Since I have 1MB RAM, I think I do not need to worry about that aspect.

Are you sure? What are you running an 8086 vintage 1982? If you mean 2GB
then that could well be your problem as you need to limit vcache to 512MB
otherwise you will run out of address space.

For more details see:
MS KB 253912 - ""Out of Memory" Error Messages with Large Amounts of RAM
Installed" (http://support.microsoft.com?kbid=253912). The reason is that
allocating more than 512MB of RAM to vcache will exhaust all available upper
memory addresses and thus prevent them being used for other purposes. This
problem is easily fixed as follows:
To limit vcache, open system.ini and add the lines
[VCache]
MaxFileCache=512000
Note that this will still mean that all memory is available to applications
but is simply limiting the amount used as virtual cache

> 1) As the BIOS ends, I get an error message saying <WINDOWS
> ROOT>\system32\hal.dll

Why didn't say at the very start of your message multi-booting Win Me with XP?
By reinstalling Win Me over an XP system you've managed to screw your master
boot record. I suspect but cannot confirm that you will have to fix this by
now performing a repair of XP.

What exactly is that "original shape" to which you wish to return? Did you
start with Win Me and then later upgrade to XP and choose to install XP to a
second partition and multiboot between the two operating systems?

I botched the last reply, so please forgive me. THE SOLUTION to your problem is NOT TO INSTALL Windows ME on ANY of your hard drives. I was told by some people at the regional offices of Microsoft that ME stands for "Multiple Errors", LOL.

finally off on my wonderlust/ancestral Cherokee homeland/clan renewal and

in as I get a chance for a room, one that don't leak, and a hookup for the

I'll be stationary for a day or so here in the heart of Civil War country to

Hey Noel!! Actually, I'm still afoot in the Virginia heartlands. Sprung a
leak in me tent, so had to come to town to get a new one, and apply for a
permit to go into some of the Tribal lands to do some research.
Sooo...thought I'd just pop in while I was here for a few days and see how
all was doing. But, I'll be off again to the boonies in a day or so for a
bit.

Heather

I am trying to picture you in *buckskins and braids*.....but it eludes me,
grin. Are you doing some genealogy? Must be fascinating!! I know there
are sites and or researchers who are tracking their Indian background and
can *scout* around for one if you want. (and I didn't mean to make that
pun, but it is such a bad one, I will leave it in, kemo sabe, lol)

Hey....Jay Silverheels (Tonto) is from around these here parts, btw. He was
from the Six Nations Reserve at Brantford which is also the home of Wayne
Gretzky.....and now the hockey *nuts* will perk up (VBG)

Have fun.....and don't behave!! That would not be your M.O.....lol.

Cheers......Heather

Lol! Haven't gotten 'round to the buckskins yet, but, I do the braids now
and then. Although, in keeping with the other side of my heritage, it's
French braid. :-))

Yes..I heard he was from those parts. Just so happens that my
great-great-grandmother on my mother's side, and many others from their
tribe, fled to Canada right before the round up of The People and the now
famous Trail of Tears began. They and many others settled somewhere in the
area of Quebec, as I understand. I have somewhat more knowledge of my
Cherokee ancestors on my father's side, they were from northern
Georgia/Tennessee, and some were in the forced march to Oklahoma.....they
didn't make it. But, I am trying to tie up some ends if I can about my
mother's side, who according to family lore, originated in Virginia in the
area of the Shenandoah Mts. and Valley. I will also be performing the
Renewal for my family, which is the reuniting of our family clan with our
ancestral homeland. I am really excited. I'm going to try to get some
pics, if they turn out half way decent, I'll put them up on my webpage. <g>

Heh!! There ya go!! At last....someone who understands me! <VBG>
