Starting recently, I often cannot send email using Outlook
Express (receiving works fine). I get a message that
it "cannot connect to the server." Sometimes, mail IS sent
with no problem. Roadrunner has assured me that it is not
a problem with them. Microsoft's "help" database says
similar problems are caused by certain routers, but I am
not using a router. Can anybody offer any suggestions?

And the full error message is? Lacking that, 90 times out of a 100 the
following will solve the problem.
Disable email scanning.
Scanning of incoming email is the biggest waste of CPU cycles ever
invented
and adds not one whit of added protection. An antivirus program worth
more
than a nickel will warn you, in a very conspicuous manner, if you ever
attempt to open or save an infected file. Even Symantec admits that
email
scanning is a waste of time.

Look at this link and read the info under the section, Disable email
protection.

Thanks for the suggestions. Unfortunately, I don't have
any virus software or firewall, so your suggestions won't
help me. I did do an online virus scan after this problem
started, and it did not find any infections. Can I just
reinstall OE or IE6 to fix this? Can't give you the exact
error message as I am not at my home computer - something
about "server not found" and an error number.

Well, I've never been engaged to a Peter, and when I was engaged my
surname wasn't Adams!
There can be all sorts of reasons for server not found. It may be that
you are not sending via the ISP you are currently dialled in with (550
errors)? But as the crystal ball is out for a polish at the moment, we
really need the error message to help more. You can reinstall, but it
rarely, if ever solves the problem and in many cases just compounds it.
Wait until you get home and email again. I'll be watching this thread.
