Frequent ME freezes
My Windows ME freezes up at least three times a day. No
error message appears. When that happens, I have to turn
off my CPU manually, wait 20 or so seconds and restart the
CPU. When the CPU activates, I have to wait until the disk
screening process is complete. If it has found an error
that caused the problem there's no indication of what that
error was.
BTW: Weather is not a factor. If a storm is coming I shut
down Windows from the proper shut down key.
Your help will be appreciated.

Windows Me error message: memory access violation in module kernal 32
Hi folks.
I really would be very grateful for any advice - I really
am stuck and unable to get my pc to run at all. I
recently went to windowsupdate.com and permitted the
recommended Windows ME upgrades to be downloaded onto my
pc. After allowing the recommended reboot my pc seemed to
hang in setup. Ever since if I try to start my pc it
fails to load up windows, just hangs and I get the error
message 'memory access violation in module kernal 32 at

I really need to find a solution soon as I'm waiting on

me.

Continued problem with Slow System
On 5/25 I wrote:
"I have a problem with Windows ME. After a couple of
hours of use the system slows way down. The cursor is
jerky when it moves and system sounds become "echo'y".
Even the clock falls way behind actual time. It acts like
a resource problem but when I close all of my open
applications, the available resources seem to be restored
to an acceptable level without a corresponding recovery in
system performance, the clock will not even catch up. I
have run both scan disk and defrag. I also have an up-to-
date virus checker and have specifically scanned for
sasser. The problem goes away after a re-boot only to
return after another couple of hours. Heavy internet
usage (on line gaming or streaming audio) seem to cause
this to happen more quickly. I do not believe that
hardware is the problem as this is a fairly recent
phenomena. Any advice?"
Noel Patton was kind enough to point me towards several
utilities to run to detect possible viruses/hijackers.

Missing files, Default partition, re-installation after replacing HD
Missing files, Default partition, re-installation after replacing HD
I have been having two partitions on my Pentium IV system; each on a
separate hard disk. I got an error message while re-installing ME that it
could not be done since there was not enough memory, even though 60 GB out
of 80 GB on one HD and 30 GB out of 40 GB on the second HD was free. Since I
have 1MB RAM, I think I do not need to worry about that aspect. As a
relieving measure, I replaced the 40 GB HD by an 80 GB HD, piping the
contents from one to the other by Norton's Ghost software.
In the process, I have created six problems for myself:
1) As the BIOS ends, I get an error message saying <WINDOWS
ROOT>\system32\hal.dll file is missing, asking me to install it. I do not
know how important a file it is and can I just copy it from someone else's
computer and paste it in Systen32 Folder. Sounds totally unbelievable.
Anyway, the Windows processing continues, if I just press the Escape Button.
What is the correct way to restore that file?
2) At the end of the BIOS processing, I now get three instead of two
options for opening Windows: XP, ME or Default. I of course select ME or XP.
But I want to understand if the presence of the third option is eventually
likely to create any problems for me. In the MY Computer configuration I see
only Floppy Drive A, Hard Disks C and D, CD ROM Drive E and CS Writer F. Do
I need to get rid of this Default Option? If yes, how?
3) As soon as XP opens, there is an error message saying Entry Point
Reinitialize Critical Section could not be located in the Dynamic Link
Library Kernel32.dll.
4) No application in XP can now be opened since a System Shutdown
within 60 seconds is initiated by NT\Authority\System
5) I have RegClean in both partitions and have attempted to fix any
errors which might have cropped up but that has not helped. The XP
installation disk does not permit re-installing, except by reformatting the
HD which means that I lose all the upgrades of XP, the security patches, the
virus patches and even important drivers for video cards installed using
very poor instructions from manufacturer of the Video and Audio cards.
6) ME still gives the error message saying there isn't enough memory
for re-installation.
How can I get the system back to its original shape and smooth functioning?

Critical Update Problem - Solved
People may remember that I had a problem with a security update for
WMP9. Although I had downloaded it several times, KB828026 kept being
re-offered.
MS Support finally solved the problem this way:
1. Boot into Safe Mode.
2. Search for any and all WMP or WMP.DLL files and delete them (in my
case there was only one).
3. Re-boot into Normal Mode.
4. Re-download WMP9 and then KB828026.
5. Re-boot.
6. Check to see if update was offered again (it wasn't).
Hope this helps anyone with a similar problem. Tag: Iexplore has caused an error in KERNEL32.DLL. Tag: 242250

select the first one u get the open with box...so this must
be the one that left clickin selects when tried to open the

What are these missing files?
With Mike M's help I have just about returned the computer to normal
operation.
When running Depends.exe I get two error messages:
1."apphelp.dll error opening file. The system cannot find the
specified file."
2."userenv.dll" same message as above.
Followed by:
"Warning: At least one delay-load dependency module was not found."
"Warning: At least one module has an unresolved import due to a
missing export function in a delay-load dependent module.
Google search indicates that "apphelp.dll" comes with XP. Going back a
year in Backups of ME system shows I have never had that file.
Google search for "userenv.dll" shows the file to be within
"user32.dll". Anyway to get the file userenv.dll, user32.dll was
downloaded. But, user32.dll is already in the Windows\System folder
and I could not copy the downloaded version to it as it was in
use...not sure I wanted to do that anyway???
Bottom line...everything seems to be working well enough that maybe I
should just press on since I don't get any error messages when various
programs load which show the above errors using Depends.exe.
