Hi all
My daughter has an HP PC with ME. I am unfamiliar with ME.
Her problem is that she can't read anything which we try plugging
into either of her two USB drives. HOWEVER...the device manager
shows the device is working properly AND we get the little Icon
on the tool bar that shows to select when you want to "Safely remove"
a device. So the PC KNOWS that there is something there. IN FACT,
for example, when I plug in a Lexar Jumpdrive, the little icon even
shows it's a Lexar Jumpdrive. The problem then is that a window doesn't
pop-up like with XP that shows the device (like in My Computer) so you
can write to the Jumpdrive or read files. In other words, how do you
get the device to show up in the "My computer" box so you can access it ?

Thank you SO SO much.

What sort of USB Drives? If hard disks how are they formatted? Remember
that Win Me in common with other Win 9x operating systems is unable to
access drives formatted using the NTFS filing systems used by XP and
Win2K. Attaching a NTFS formatted usb drive will appear in the Device
manager but not in Windows Explorer.

Oh. Well we tried a little USB Jumpdrive , some call them thumbdrives, etc.
We also tried plugging in her digital camera with USB cable to access the
memory card in the camera. Neither shows in Windows Explorer. Is there a
format or setting to set then ?

I would have expected both a memory card and a thumbdrive to show up. Try
booting to Safe Mode, opening the Device Manager and deleting everything
usb related in the Device Manager and then reboot back to normal mode
which will then force Win Me to reinstall the usb drivers. Ensure also
that a tool such as TweakUI hadn't been used to limit the drive letters
that are available for allocation in Windows Explorer.
