    - Is there a way to stop Program checking for update Hello All: I have been running on win ME, Int. Explorer vs. 6.01 sp - a licensed version of a Shareware Indexing (file management for Hard drive and removeable media) Program. Within past week when Program is opened - a small screen flashes saying checking for update. Program then shuts down and my monitor goes black with error message: Vwin32(05)T 000012DO Error OE: 0028: CO2AB4A8. I press any key and get back into windows. But Program will not run. Authors of Program will not respond - though their online Registration Agent still is willing to accept licensing money. But, not answer why this is happening. If I discontinue cable connection - Program runs fine. Reinstallation clearly shows registered to me. Everything else on system just fine. Problem only with this paid for Program -which I suspect Author wishes would go away - so they can offer an updated/changed version. .     - Network Error I followed a Microsoft help file that told me to choose another registry file so I could start using system restor again. Now when I boot I get several error messages. I am going to work on them one at a time. I think I can take care of the Norton error message by reinstalling. I want to upgrade this but I also want to know whether or not I will get Excel, PowerPoint, Access and so forth.     - Falling leaves A couple of years ago Windowsupdate.com offered Falling Leaves and Science Fiction themes which I installed. Something has changed and now when I try the screensavers from those themes I get couldn't find any scene definitions in location " . " -reinstall? as an error message. If I sample the screen saver from Themes setup it works. If I run it from its directory under Program Files\Plus!\Themes\FALLINGL it works. Same goes for Science Fiction. I've tried this on 98SE and Me with the same results. There is a matching .SCN file I even copied to the Windows directory to accompany the screensaver. Any ides where else the .SCN file should be?     - Mmsystem.dll Need additional help with Mmsystem.dll error. I have made the changes in the "System.ini" file, by adding in a line which states drivers=mmsystem.dll. This was from the Microsoft knowledge base article - 138835. This did elimate the error message,and gave me sound back, but now I have no mouse response. An error message now appears which shows the color is set to 256 and change to 16 bit. The computer I am trying repair is a HP 7905 running Windows ME.     - Windows XP Can I install XP Home edition or XP Pro onto a bare hard- drive that has no operating system on it at all? I can't seem to install over the following: Have Windows 95 OEM and the Windows 98 Upgrade, And then Windows ME Upgrade. I can't install. Too many error messages when trying to install XP. Also messages about it leaving out files and or not being able to find files come up when trying to load XP. I try retry loading files, that does not work; So I select skip file; Which leads me to skiping a whole lot of files because it won't or can't load them from the disc. It will load to 100% even though I had to skip files to get it unto 100% But then it won't finalize the installation. It would seem I need to format and install on a clean hard-drive.     - Wscript has caused error Every time I turn on the computer I get a message saying "Wscript has caused error in ADVAPI32.DLL. Wscript will now close."     - ME updates screwed my computer I decided to install updates to ME which I have never done before. The last update installed was s system restore update. After that install I restarted my computer and everything had changed. All of my dialog boxes are now very small, also my mouse and all fonts. I tried all kind of changes in display appearances but nothing is changing the box or mouse size. It also changed all my font types everywhere on my computer, so then I tried system restore and the only restore point that is available is what I did today and the system restore is unsuccessful.     - Lost my Documents Folders When Upgrading From ME To XP I just upgraded my Windows ME to XP Home Edition. When it finished all the folders under MY DOCUMENTS were missing. I called Microsoft and they didn't really help me. They said to uninstall XP and go back to ME edition and they should be there. Well, they weren't.. Can anyone help me get them back. I have several thousand photos that are lost at present that were in MY Pictures folder. I kept meaning to back them up, but didn't.     - Missing Outlook files My wife's cousin has suddenly lost all her personal data. My documents is empty and she has a registry problem. Of course, nothing is backed up. I've made her drive a slave and plugged it into one of my machines because her O/S is u/s. I'm trying to find her e-mail messages and her address list for Outlook.     - Help!! ME boot problem I have a Gateway laptop running Me. Yesterday it began having problems booting up. It begins to boot, then gives an error message saying "MSGSRV32 has caused an error in KRNL386.exe, try rebooting your computer." After close the text box, the boot process stops and the computer is hung. A couple days prior Norton Anti-Virus caught a virus, I believe W32.opaserv, which was effecting win.ini and a couple other files. It seemed to fix the problem at the time. I ran a full system virus scan after that & before this problem began. I have also run numerous virus scans and Norton Disk Doctor from the CD since. I also downloaded a fix for that virus from Symantec and ran it w/o any change. I am very frustrated now. I really don't know where the problem is or how to fix it. Can anyone help?     - Explorer caused error I get an error message pop up at varoius times. It may come right after turn on has completed. It say's Explorer has caused an error in <unknown>. Explorer will now close. If you continue to experiance problems , try restarting your computer. If I delete the message, some times I can keep going without a problem. If I click on "close" it closes and I can't connect to the internet. I have to shut down or reboot. If I ignore it, I can do whatever I want with the error flag stuck on the screen.     - Me won't boot past wallpaper At the risk of cross-posting, I was informed by MVP Glee to post on this group. PROBLEM: On a customer machine, Dell PIII 128 ram running "ME". When you boot up, it will only go to the Wallpaper and no further. No Task Bar, QL, Clock or Start button... So far this is what I have done: Booted into Safe Mode OK and checked Explorer and everything appears to be there and then attempted a scandisk (no go, says I need to have 2 MB's more space?), so tried to Defrag and same thing. When I was at C: Properties/General Tab, it says 0 used space, 0 free space. In looking farther, when attempted to do this defrag, it says C: does not exist. Hmmm. I went into msconfig and did a selective startup and shut down everything but the necessaries, NO CIGAR on reboot... I am not sure how full this HD is, as it is a customer rig.. Customer says he has much needed data and of course NO BACKUPS ARRRRGGHH..     - Flashing "W" freeze I have tried several "experts" and they seem to be unable to help me...when I am working in a word document..and sometimes..not always... I hit print or insert or other requests... down at the bottom left hand corner of my screen it will say "requesting virus scan"..the W for the Word starts flashing and everything freezes and it is impossible to get out of the document.. I have to use Alt/Con/Delete several times to get out and lose what ever I was working on...You never know when it will happen..     - Windows Explorer lock-up and white screen I have Windows ME. I've had no problems for 2.5 years now. This past week I installed MSN Messenger and Logitech QuickCam 5.0.1. Since that time I have started getting lock-ups and white screens (more like grey), most often when I try to open Windows Explorer to browse my files, but sometimes when I click a link in my internet browser (CompuServe or IE).     - Windows Update not responding I attempted to run Windows Update for Windows ME several days ago. When the update process ran for over 15 hours, I figured that since the previous udates took minutes rather than several hours, I shut down the update process.     - C Drive Write Error I recently had to install a new hard drive to replace a malfunctioning drive. I re-installed windows and did all of the updates. Here is my problem. If the computer sits for a long time, overnight, and I turn it on I get a blue screen that says "Write Error on C Drive. Data and Files May Be Lost"; or something to that effect. I then have to reset the computer, using the power button. When the computer comes on, it runs scandisk and then loads up without an error. Once the computer is up an running, I can shut if off for a few minutes and then turn it back on, without receiving the error message. I don't know where to start looking to try and fix this error. Does anyone have an idea about what could cause this?     - Windows ME & Word Word was working OK, now when I start it, it hangs the PC right after displaying the logo when its starting up. I removed and reloaded Word, during the restart of windows I got the following message during the updating files section... "Windows could not upgrade the file %1 from %2" This came up numerous times and then windows said it could not complete the update and finished the restart. everytime I receive an attachment with a jpg or jpeg
attchment it is grayed out so I can`t save it or open it.
GIF attachments work fine. Any ideas on how I can fix
this. It was working properly yesterday.

Are you talking about Outlook Express?

If you are, this is a security feature.
in Outlook Express 6. In case
you run a worm/virus in an attachment.

Go to to Tools/Options/Security
Untick Do not allow attachments.

To disable it.
