I left my computer with my mother when I moved across country. After 8 months, I have it back, but it so muddled with miscellaneous programs, etc. that it won't even shut down by itself! I want to restore it to it's original configuration, but in my absence she lost my recovery cd. I can't get a new one from the manufacturer because it's an old operating system, and my computer is so messed up I can't even get system restore to run. Am I doomed?

...on a more serious note......

No, you're not doomed - just fated to learn a little about your system!<g>
First things first - it's likely that such problems are caused by a virus
infection or similar.
Your best bet is to run a DOS virus scanner over the system before
attempting anything else.
Download F-Prot for DOS from www.f-prot.com create the boot disks from the
downloads, and use them to boot the PC.
Run a full system scan of all files

then......
You may have a virus/spyware hijack

download the Stinger from here and run it to make sure that A-V-disabling
viruses are not present on your PC
http://download.nai.com/products/mcafee-avert/stinger.exe

- update your virus scanner and run a full system scan of all files.

Reboot to Safe Mode and run CWShredder - to remove variants of the
CoolWebSearch hijacker.
http://www.merijn.org/cwschronicles.html

Use CWShredder, the removal tool:
http://www.merijn.org/files/cwshredder.zip
http://www.merijn.org/files/CWShredder.exe
http://www.spywareinfo.com/downloads/tools/CWShredder.exe
http://www.zerosrealm.com/downloads/CWShredder.zip

Try BHODemon - from http://www.spywareinfo.com/downloads/bhod/
see what it reports

Download AdAware from www.lavasoftusa.com, install, update, and run it to
remove spyware, adware,
and other such nasties from your system.

Post back with your results, and we'll go from there.
