    - files and folders in reverse order For some reason when I browse my harddrive, when I am finding a program to run, finding a file to open, or finding a location to save something, instead of the folders coming first in alphabetical order, followed by files, I get files first in reverse alphabetical order followed by folders in reverse alphabetical order. I don't think I did anything to bring this about. I normally browse in list view, but even if I change to detail view so that I can click on the column title to reverse the order it only reverses it temporarily because if I open another folder, or the next time I browse, it goes back to reverse order. This is only when the browsing window comes up, not when I use "My Computer" to look through my harddrive. Tag: Re: Gmail Tag: 257560

    - true color & 800x600 I have a PC that is mostly used to play games and not hooked to the internet. It is stuck in 16 colors and 640x480. When I go to Display and try to change to true colors (24 bit) nothing shows but 16 colors and the resolution is stuck at 640x480. I get the message that system restore has been turned off and to uncheck the "clear disable system restore" in the troubleshooting tab. I did this and then it says I have to restart the PC and I said OK. When the PC restarts, windows ME doesn't come up. Amongst the text there is "Incorrect Drive A type -- run setup F1. F1 will not work and the PC hangs up so I turn it off by the power button... turn it back on and Windows Me comes on.     - Win ME fails to start I changed mouse. simple? No! On reboot the system failed to detect the mouse so I reverted to the old one. Now on restart it only boots to the DOS "safe mode menu" i.e. with the options to start normally, in safe mode etc...but the key board is unresponsive. (yes I have chcked all the connections) All that happens is that is defaults to safe mode but when it attempts to start it resets back to the dOS screen. An endless loop that I do not seem to get out of...HELP! I have NAV 2004 and my gut feel is that once again NAV has corrupted something - looks like the mouse / keyboard drivers. Apart from the magic wand, how do I boot from the startup disc in DOS and rapair / remove these driver files so it will either start as before or at least seek new versions...     - deleting a linux partition I have Windows ME on a 20g hard drive e-machines box. 18 mos ago or so, I tried configuring for dual boot by either existing me os or some flavor of Linux, which required a hard disk partition. the linux install handled all that. now the linux boot up is corrupted, and i haven't fooled with it for quite some time. would like to get rid of the partition, the linux software and regain the hard drive space. i'd also like to not have to copy all data/software and do a complete re-install. is this possible?     - Scan disc keeps running and running and running...... I am experiencing a probllem with scan disc. Lately after a lock up or improper shutdown, Scan disc starts up and will keep running and running and running. I get the scan disc has timed out message after the alloted time.     - WININET.DLL error message When I try to run a disk cleanup I get the following message. Cleanmgr has caused an error in WININET.DLL. Any ideas on how to fix this problem?     - Please help with error message when using Internet Explorer with M Last Saturday, our Dell, which runs ME, started doing two odd things. Most importantly, whenever we would try to type a new address in the address field in IE, it would give this error message: "Iexplore has caused an error in MSHTML.DLL. Iexplore will now close." This message occurred whenever you tried to change the address field at the top of IE. I looked at the this website and read the information at support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;265244&sd=dell. This told me to download IE 5.5 from one of two microsoft websites. I looked at both, but couldn't find any version of IE 5.5. However, there was a version of IE 6.0 for ME, so I downloaded that. It did not solve the problem at all. I looked at my version of MSHTML.DLL and it is listed as version 5.5, which may be part of the problem. Any help on how to fix this would be greatly appreciated. At the same time, one other thing started happening. Normally, to connect to the internet, we double clik on IE. This opens IE and a dialog box called "Connect To" that contains the phone number, account name, and password to our ISP. Now, the Connect To box appears as soon as we boot up.     - how to format win me for virus ridden hard drive My son's computer has multiple viruses and he is using Windows me. Can anyone help me (step by step is you can)format the hard drive to clean everything off and start over.     - Freeze up on start up I run Windows ME and upon startup windows does not load. Screen freezes at different points on startup. At Windows ME screen, at DOS promt before loading ME, or at the beginning of Desk Top screen. I have to unplug PC to turn it off and then restart it.     - Systray clock - closure Follow up to all who helped <tried to help> me with making the 'hide_clock_feature' stick after a reboot. I decided to give my 6 year old PC a Xmas present and reformatted the hard drive (200,000+ reg entries down to just under 60,000). After hours of re- loading Win98 and upgrading to WinME (wish I had a full WinME disk rather than an upgrade disk) AND downloading IE6SP1 and ALL the patches and updates from MS AND downloading all my favourite applications AND downloading ALL the latest malware definitions AND etc etc ... I now have a systray clock that STAYS HIDDEN. ps ..... the 'floating clock' still floats and my systracl clock stays hidden, wohoo. <original message follows> Is there any procedure for disabling the system tray clock ? I can right click the taskbar, select 'properties' and un-check 'show system clock'. That removes the clock, but on next bootup the clock is back.     - DUN Not installed and a blank Windows Setup Tab 1. Am trying to install the SBC Yahoo CD but it says that DUN is not installed (which stops the install process). There is a DUN applet in Control Panel and I can get through the internet already. Any idea what is it looking for to say that DUN is NOT installed? Some registry value? 2. Also in Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs>Windows Setup tab, there are no entries in the "Components" list. It is completely blank so that it looks like nothing is installed.     - Blue screen of death Hello. I have WinME and recently when I simply close the IE I get the blue screen of death and saying: "error: OE-0177:BFF8E64B". Since I can not return to windows I simply shotdown and restart. Scan disking gives the following: "This drive's boot area contains importatn information that is damaged or invalid. This can casue windows to reprot the drive's free space incrorrectly or slowly. Scan disk repairs the boot area by recording the correct values in this area." When I say repair I get the following : " A program (or windows itself) saved information to your drive after the previous error was detected. scandisk must restart so it can include this new information in the scan for errors. This error, and any other errors that were previously reported, but not corrected may be reported again." So. I get back to the windows and wait for the next time around this happens. I seem to be free of scumware, spam or what have you. At least so report the Ad-aware, Spybot, spywareblaster, CWshredder, etc. Sorry about the lengthy message.     - Modem Installation Problems Just installed a new PCI modem and ME is not auto detecting it. I've tried: - Loading modem drivers from the Modem CD - The ME modem trouble shooting process - Uninstalling and reinstalling drivers - Device Manager, modem, properties, more info - Moving the modem into different PCI slots - checked IRQ settings etc The PC is only showing Com 1 and Com 2.     - two windows when emailing I have a annoying problem that comes up whenever I compose a new email from my default email, which is Earthlink. It is a problem that comes up recently. Whenever I CCP someone's email address, and click on 'compose new email' on my Earthlink email server, I get two windows instead of one.     - Windows ME all downloads hang during install Using latest spyware, malware programs, etc. When microsoft downloads are attempted, program downloads a 2 MB file then takes 3 hours to install then hangs. I tried to download flash player, began download then just hangs without any messages. Am using reputable ISP on a dial-up. 10GB hard drive avail with 128MB ram. I get tired of pulling the power chord out of the power strip. And it may not be saving my battery. Overtime I Power up the battery shows low power. I tried reformatting the C: Drive as per Article ID 221829, and then Article ID 66706, but when I try format c: /s I get a message saying that Windows doesn't support this type of formatting any more and I need to make a startup disk, which I obviously have otherwise I wouldn't be here.     - Explorer cannot communicate with modem Hi Everyone, A snag that has me baffled. My modem will dial-up and connect to my internet provider; no problem there. The problem is: whenever I try to activate anything to the internet I receive this message, "Explorer has caused an error in <unknown>. Explorer will now close." "If this problem continues reboot." I close the message and explorer does close. I know I downloaded something which caused this problem, but I do not know what or what to delete. I am about to delete - format- reinstall Win Me.
