I've got a really sick computer - and I can't get past
Scandisk. Runs and runs. Tried to run in safe mode with
no luck - still stuck in scandisk.

Any ideas?

I've had the most luck with Scandisk AFTER doing a Defrag first. But BEFORE
you do Defrag, run the Disk Cleanup.

Hope this helps!

Either try running Defrag in Safe Mode and/or download and run ScanDefrag
v5.0.

This is a FREE utility, written by several well respected contributors to
these News Groups and has been designed to run several original MS utilities
through a 'filter' which eliminates the usual junk which stops Defrag (and
Scandisk) from running properly in Normal Mode - as you are already
experiencing <g>

You can get ScanDefrag at either of the two sites below - and be sure to
read the associated notes for setting it up:
http://home.earthlink.net/~bblanton2/scandefrag/main.htm
http://www.blueorbsoft.com/scandefrag/index.html

HTH and good luck

Mart

**Please ignore my previous reply - if it shows - it should have been
cancelled**

You could try running scandisk in Real Mode DOS and see if that will clear
the problem.

Boot from your WinMe Startup (floppy) Disk.
Select option 4) Minimal and at the A:\> prompt, type:
scandisk c:
Then press return. (Note the space between the k and the c and note the
colon : after the c)

DO NOT DO THAT!!

Deleting files from, or defragmenting a corrupted FAT filesystem is likely
to cause data loss.

Boot from a boot floppy and run scandisk from there.
