I've had some interesting problems with Windows ME.

It had been freezing on startup every third or fourth time the
computer started -- the little hourglass would appear next to the
cursor, and I couldn't click on anything. I'd thought that Adobe
Reader had caused it, but it happened last night, and I unistalled
Reader a few days ago. I tired to trouble shoot it myself, and now
Windows Media Player won't start when I click on it!

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

And I just checked -- the problem with Windows Media Player persists
when I go to safe mode (which is also when it started, I think).

Thanks in advance.

You may have a virus/spyware hijack

download the Stinger from here and run it to make sure that A-V-disabling
viruses are not present on your PC
http://download.nai.com/products/mcafee-avert/stinger.exe

- update your virus scanner and run a full system scan of all files.

Reboot to Safe Mode and run CWShredder - to remove variants of the
CoolWebSearch hijacker.

Use CWShredder, the removal tool:

http://www.merijn.org/files/CWShredder.exe
http://www.spywareinfo.com/downloads/tools/CWShredder.exe
http://www.zerosrealm.com/downloads/CWShredder.zip

download AdAware from www.lavasoftusa.com, install, update, and run it to
remove spyware, adware,
and other such nasties from your system.

I already have Adware and Norton anti-virus; I downloaded and ran the
other programs you mentioned and, for good measure, got my hands on
Spybot, which found 70 "problems." So far, no more freezes.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Thanks.

Unfortunately there's no single 'magic bullet' for malware - and you need to
have an entire battery of heavy artillery available in today's warground.

Here's hoping that Spybot turns the trick for you - come back if you need
further help (there's a few howitzers hidden in the backwoods yet!<g>)

Unfortunately, it froze just at the start of the session where I
downloaded your last post! Spybot then found some "problems,"
including one that does something to the registry, and no freezes
since. Knock on wood!
