    - Shut Down/Restart Hang Hey, I just have a shut-down/restart problem. I operate a Windows ME Intel Pentium III 800Mhz computer. This problem has gradually grown in occurance over the past few weeks until it now happens practically every time I shut down. Basically, Upon selecting a shut down or restart option in the Start > Shut Down menu, it proceeds to shut down and then the display screen completely blacks out as though to shut down/restart and display 'it Is Now Safe To Turn Off Your Computer', but it doesn't, rather, just hangs on this black screen. One thing that does happen, however, is a small flashing bar displayed on the black screen (sometimes in an irregular position, usually in the top- left corner) as though I should start typing code or something. However, pressing keys does nothing and it is completely unresponsive. Therefore the only way I can force my computer to shut down is with the power button with it still running. I had this problem last year (on the same computer) and only solved it by completely wiping my computer. I hope this is solvable.... Tag: Fonts unreadable Tag: 222252

    - General information I recently tried to do the defragmenting program and the program will not do the defrag. It has run for too long and is still checking the disk for errors. In the previous times of doing the defrag, there have been no problems at all. Can anyone help with this problem.     - Restore I have run a virus check and find 4 files in the restore directory that indicated they may be "unwanted programs" they appear to be spyware but when I try to delete, quarantine, it am told the disk is write protected.     - WinMe/IE6 - Downloadinf When the DAP(Download Accel. Plus) refers the files to download to "Open Browser", it starts well, but if the connection due to certain reason( coild be the isp's time limit for larger files) is lost.     - documents unreadable After burning files onto a cd for storage, the zip folders became unreadable. The icons for the zip folders changed, and some of the other folders changed in the titles. I am a total novice with technical aspects and don't even know where to go with this to get my documents back into a readable format. The cd that was burned is also unreadable.     - Hardware device update locks up When I tried to add a device, the window saying "windows is updating the hardware divice database" with the status bar locks at 0%. There is no activity forever. I'm sure some virsus has affected this computer. My friend didn't use AV and has 2 kids that have god know's where.     - Size of Windows folder I am considering a backup scheme which involves partitioning and disk imaging. I would like my C: partition to contain Windows ME and as little else as possible. I would like to be able to burn a compressed image of my C: partition to a single CD-R. The size of my Windows Folder is 1.33 GB. I believe this size is quite a bit larger than it should be. Can someone please help me figure out why it is this large? I got my PC in October 2000. It came with a load of preinstalled applications, mainly Microsoft Works Suite 2000, NAV, and Roxio ECDC. I've added very little (Acrobat Reader, Real Player, and a few other things). Here are sizes of the subfolders which I believe are most susceptible to growth: Application Data 27.7 MB Cookies 10.8 MB Temp 33.8 MB TIF 298 MB (Using the settings in IE6, I have TIF limited to 63 MB. I don't understand why my TIF subfolder is 298 MB). Microsoft Disk Cleanup sees only 74 MB which it can free. My Recycle Bin has 97 MB space reserved (if this is pertinent). My PC: 64 MB RAM; 10 GB HDD. I believe it is possible for the Windows Folder in WinME to be as small as 800 MB. Why is mine 1.33 GB? Tag: Fonts unreadable Tag: 222137
