I know this is not an MS error, but there are those on here that are using
Firefox. This error started after I uninstalled XP......but have no clue
what it is. It has happened about 3 times, and just need a clue as to why.
I was playing a Pogo game and had shut it down when it
happened.....graphics??

Thanks......Heather

Hi, Heather,

Does the Pogo game use Java? It sometimes causes FF to crash. I just
had this occur the other day. The only other thought is do you have the
now notorious 891711 hotfix installed? If so, you've probably read all
the problem reports, and some seem to be specific to the FF and Mozilla
browsers.

Do you have FF 1.0.1 installed? You could try uninstalling and then
reinstalling FF to see if it corrects the problem.

Yes, it does.....but it didn't crash till the other day. I have had to
download Sun Java 1.4.06 (or something along that line, grin) way back even
with IE.

NO, thank goodness. I am lax about putting updates and hotfixes on the last
few months, particularly since I only use Firefox now. I read the
descriptions of what they are for and what the possible problems might be
for WinME (is this MS's way of telling us to upgrade to XP???) and I only
put on what I personally think is OK. But I am not a rocket scientist,
grin.

I totally missed those two for some reason. I tried upgrading to XP on Feb.
20th and it was a total mess, which I have been cleaning up slowly ever
since....never thought to look at Windows Update. Someone looking out for
me?? (VBG)

Yes, I have the patch......just double-checked a couple of days ago. Where
do you get your info from......a forum? I haven't looked for one. Nothing
new re extensions on here.....just IE View and one other, which escapes me
at the moment. I haven't done anything with Profile either.

If you think of anything, drop me a line. And thank you for the assistance.
It probably is the shake up this computer had with XP.

I just remembered.....I have had a "VSMon" error twice this week.....just at
shutdown. Had one today. Not quite sure what that one is.

Cheers.....Heather

Hi, Heather,

Vsmon.exe is the TrueVector service that's part of Zonealarm. It sounds
like it's hanging on shutdown. If you're seeing these problems only
since attempting the XP installation, there's a good likelihood that's
what may be causing problems for you. I had FF crash with Java 1.5.0_02
installed, but it's only occurred once. I also have the 891711 hotfix
installed. I still think uninstalling and reinstalling FF is the way to
go. Have you considered doing a clean install of XP? It'll get rid of
the cobwebs on your HD. ;)

Cheers,
Tom

Re: Re Firefox Error by Heather

Heather

Hi Tom.......

Thank you so much.....I didn't realize it was part of ZA. The Java is
1.4.2_06, btw. I get incredibly confused on the Sun Java site....there is a
huge one called Version 5 (aka 1.4.2_07, I think).....not about to install
that one.

I may just do as you say and uninstall and reinstall FF.......but I know
part of my problems are the incomplete uninstall of XP. Noel helped me with
the Device Manager problem and a lot more things. It is almost back to
normal in Windows Explorer.

BUT.....I know you are probably right about the clean install (sob) and it
is a last resort with me. Don't know how to do a reformat to start with,
lol. I was just being stubborn and trying to sort it out. WinME is working
fine other than those VSMon & FF errors......but they just started this
week. But there are a lot of *cobwebs* on this 4 year old computer, grin.

I am also considering a 2nd hard drive and would put XP on that and
hopefully hang onto this WinME until I got sorted out. I hate change, to be
honest and do like WinME!! I had everything backed up before I tried the
upgrade......due to being hit with a power surge. Had the computer checked
out by a reputable tech, and he said it was OK.....obviously it wasn't.

A plug for CyberPower UPS here......they were excellent. Sent me a new UPS
immediately and offered to pay for repairs. Meanwhile I had bought an APC
one right away because we have a lot of surges and drops in this area.
Already had one *fried power supply*!! The CyberPower AVR they sent me was
better than the one I had......top of the line for home users.

I am even looking at new computers, but a new roof and furnace are first in
line, durn it!!

Thanks for your explanation......I will let you know how I get on and what I
decide to do. Am getting just a tad ticked off with the way things are at
the moment. 8-(((

Cheers.....Heather

Hi Tom.....

Reinstalled a slightly newer version of ZAPro......all went well. I will do
the same with FF tomorrow. I usually never use the latest and greatest from
ZA.....learned that a long time ago. (G)

Re: Firefox Error ... getting Heather's machine working well by Jack

Jack

Heather, I recommend obtaining a second HD, 7200 rpm, ATA 133, since they
are quite inexpensive now... under $US 75, or even $50, on occasion, in my
area. Something like 80-160 GB. Maxtor or Hitachi is preferable. Create a
2.1 GB, FAT32, 4 KB cluster size, partition at its head for your WinME
swapfile, which you will move to it from the current C:. Then create a
large NTFS partition for your eventual dual-booted XP. Then create a
partition of ca. 20-40 GB using FAT32 at the end for a backup partition for
WinME. This is where you will store the images of the WinME OS, and any
other desired backups. There are many good backup tools available. After
XP is installed and working, you may wish to consider BootIt NG to backup
and manage the startup.

Hard Disk"

"Order in Which MS-DOS and Windows Assign Drive Letters"
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;[LN];51978

I haven't followed what I suspect are your many posts in several locations
about your troubles since the uninstallation of your first attempt to
install XP.
Before proceeding further with any installations, persevere in correcting
all current problems. Make sure no Marks are in Device Manager, and run
Disk Cleanup, scandisk, and defrag. Then run the AV and antispyware tools
repeatedly until certain all is well. Then repeat defrag.

Boot very cleanly and test your often-used apps. Remove 891711 only if you
are pretty sure it is causing problems.
I wouldn't be too concerned about intermittently crashing games played over
the internet, as I suspect communication problems are the cause, not your
client machine.

AND KEEP A GOOD, DETAILED LOGBOOK. Patience and persistence are keys.

Sorry can't help you there Heather, as you know I run Firefox now and
Thunderbird but on XP. Don't have any problems but probably haven't

Heather

Thanks, Jack......

I have been looking at HD's and it seems that 80 GB is the smallest, coming
in around $100 Cdn. 160 GB is about $150 or less.....odd, isn't it.

I have two techs lined up who will install it, partition it and add my XP
Home.....costing about $50 for the labour + the HD.

As to the rest, I do all the maintenance daily, did not d/l the offending
hotfix so spared that problem.......and run my AV from time to time. I
honestly never seem to see viruses or spyware anymore. A lot of that is due
to the anti-spam, anti-virus tools used by my ISP. As for spyware, I
haven't seen one for months. Partly due to SpywareBlaster (I think) and
using Firefox.

But I will certainly read up on what you posted. I suppose (sigh) that a
reformat is a possibility, but it is the last resort in my book!!

Cheers....Heather, in the land of snow......will it ever end??

I suspect the travel time alone amounts to nearly that in/near Brampton.

Please get your current machine running as well as you can, and repost with

Hi Jack.....

No travel time......except mine. These two techs are close by, so will
unhook the CPU and take it to one of them. Just have to find a HD on
sale.....*cheap* is in the genes, grin. 40 gig would be fine, but are hard
to locate.

Heading over to Staples now to buy some photo paper....I have hooked up the
Epson printer (photos and CD labels and the like).....but forgot the paper.

I will get this computer into the best shape possible before doing anything.
Seems to be behaving rather well, considering all I put it through.

Cheers from 33 degree Fahr. Brampton with about 1-2 feet of snow........and
more coming. And this weekend is officially the start of Spring? Tell that
to the weather gods up here!!

If you plan on doing many more photos on the 'puter, I recommend the 80 GB
HD, or even larger, for that inevitable archive.
Alternatively, you can add some external USB storage, if a CD-RW or DVD-RW
device isn't enough, in the future.

It's 31° here this AM, with the same 2 ft. of snow/ice as you. I've
forgotten what spring would look like ...

Jeez, Jack! I've got nearly a thousand and a half 1028x768 300dpi jpgs here
and they don't come to more than 1GB! Converted to bitmaps they'd be about
4GB.

Though with Figgs's MP3 collection she might want more space.

Yet another reason to thank you, Shane, this AM.
I suppose I'm a little skittish thinking of my daughter's 30 GB Pinnacle

We just had about a month of snow, rarely settling here in London but it did
snow almost every day for about two weeks. But yesterday was and today is a
beautiful spring day. Warm enough to hint at a gorgeous summer to come. I'm
sitting here with the door wide open, garden full of daffodils, Forsythia
blooming (train thundering past!).

Feels great to be alive, even with the trains!

Ye Gods!! I just counted up pics & mp3's on this HD......

570 pictures (mostly jpegs)......and 3,158 mp3's!!!! And the HD is still
not half full. I had no idea I had all of those mp3's, but it took some 15
CD's to back them up as data.....and I got rid of a lot of full CD's on
here.

I have the mp3's in separate folders according to *genre*......most of them
being 700 MB in size so that I could back them up easier.

Not going to try and estimate the GB's.....but not that far off Shane's
estimate. Makes you realize just how big one GIG is!!

And I can put them up on the Web as an archive, via either my ISP or
Yahoo.....

Cheers...Figgs

Try oggs Figgs, they take less space than mp3 and sound better.

<lol> Don't know how many pictures I have in mine but I just did a quick
count up and it totals just over 115MB They are all in My Pictures in
folders depending what they are, plus burned to CD. It would take too
long to count the actual photo's. Don't have any music only the sample
that comes with Media Player 10 as I never use it <g>

What on earth is an *ogg*?? I have seen that in WinMX and Limewire I think.
Never knew what it was.

I will take a look and try some out.

Thanks......Figgs

Must be a young pup then!! And there are two folders of full CD's. Want
the complete collection of "Rompin' Ronnie Hawkins"??? I knew him way back
when (before he married Wanda). We used to sit in on rehearsals and
sometimes musicians like Bo Diddley and Conway Twitty would amble in and
have a jam session. They were just super!!

And to Joan.....they do NOT go back to the 40's, but I will admit to having
some of the earliest R & B from then......singers you would never have heard
of. Wilbur Harrison, Lavern Baker, etc. (VBG)

Cheers.....Figgs
