Hello -

This is a wierd ME machine. Have been cleaning viruses,
worms, etc off for two days.

I did a Windows update, and one of the items downloaded
was 'Automatic Update'. Following the first 'Automatic
Operation' (dialup Inet access), after reboot when I open
Explore (not IE), the left-hand pane is totally gray and
empty except for an 'x' in the upper RH corner.

It opens to the 'Start Menu' and shows those items on the
RH side, but NOTHING in the LH pane! I can click on
the 'FOLDERS' button, and the LH pane disappears leaving
only the individual items showing. Click 'FOLDERS' again,
and I have two panes again but the LH pane is grayed out.

Can't find any way to get it back! Flippin' wierd.

Please help! Thx.

The Explorer Left pane being greyed out is usually caused by a corruption
within Internet Explorer (yes, I know you're talking about Windows
Explorer!)

Reboot to Safe Mode
Go to Add/Remove Programs and try a repair of Internet Explorer from there.
Go to the entry for 'Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 SP1 and Internet Tools'
in Add/Remove Programs
Click on Remove - and click on Repair on the window that pops up
Reboot on request to Normal Mode

If the above entry isn't there, you first need to uninstall all the patches
applied, then do the repair, then reapply the patches
The patches are listed in Add/Remove under the names 'Internet Explorer
Qxxxxxx'
highlight, click Remove - reboot if requested.
Repeat until the MSIE6SP1 entry appears - then repair as above.

Repairing IE (Add/Remove Programs) will almost always fix this Windows
Explorer.exe problem. See "Description of the Internet Explorer Repair Tool"
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;194177
and run "Repair" on Internet Explorer.

Or take a look at: "All Folders" Pane Missing or Windows Explorer Is Blank
