I had just down the first critical update of 14 listed on
a computer using Windows ME. The download was the SP-1.
It downloaded with no problems. Now I'm receiving error
message 29 Unspecified when I attempt to open the control
panel. Also, it will not "scan for updates" in Windows
Update. Any suggestions?

Norton running when you installed IE?

Try a repair of IE while in Safe Mode - from Add/Remove Programs
