Not a good thing at all as many of those patches are need to prevent infection
by other worms and viruses. They haven't all suddenly go away just because
W32.Blaster.Worm appeared. <g> What is perhaps unfortunate is that it
appears you may not have been keeping your PC up to date and protected against
possible infection by a virus. Patches aren't just to be downloaded when a
particular virus hits the headlines since by then it is probably too late,
instead you should install them soon after release and preferably individually
rather than in bulk.
As for you problem in downloading patches from the WindowsUpdate site have a
look at the Troubleshooter
(
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/troubleshoot/) and see if you can find
a solution there for your problem.
