 - Low System Resources with plenty of RAM I have 256MB of RAM and virtually infinite free hardrive space running Win ME. I often get low resource error messages when running only a couple of applications (typically just MSN and Quicken). I have to reboot often and still have to be exceptionally careful about using resources.  - Trying to link a Windows 3.11 laptop to a Windows Me desktop We have a dying laptop (running Windows 3.11) that has served us well for the past 8 years. Unfortunately, almost since the beginning, the floppy drive has not worked, which up until now, was fine. But now with the hard drive dying, there's a ton of work stored on that computer that we'd like to save elsewhere. We recently bought a desktop with Windows Me. Is there a way to connect the two computers in such a way to transfer the files on the laptop to the desktop? Someone has already suggested connecting the two - laptop serial port to the desktop parallel port. In fact, they're connected now, but no one wants to recognize the other. Any way to do this?  - Resources and Stability Resource and Stability - I use Windows Me and have 128 MB of RAM. Since my computer was new I have always had problems with using resources and having to reboot. Also, error messages and stability have been an issue. However, resources are my main concern. I have tried all the known fixes, so feel my problem is inherent in my system.  - System Boot Anomaly Last week I installed the following Windows updates: KB824145 for IE6 SP1 KB825119 for Windows ME and KB828026 for Media Player. Since installing these updates I've been experiencing a number of system anomalies. How about it Microsoft? Are these updates contributing to issues described below? Issue 1: The hyperlinks, e.g., My Documents, My Computer, etc. no longer function from the Start Menu ( see the thread of my post "Loss of Hyperlink Functionality" from 11/19/2003). Removing one of the updates (IE Update Q824145) as suggested by one of the respondents had no effect. Issue 2: For the past two days I haven't had a single clean boot of my computer. The process advances to the stage with a blank blue screen (the desktop background) and hangs. The mouse is useless for little more that running the cursor around on the screen. The only response from the keyboard comes when I press CTRL-ALT-DEL. This invokes a sound from within the machine that makes me think that a rapid-fire mechanical woodpecker (metalpecker?) is attacking the hard drive. The only recourse is to power down. Naturally, on the subsequent reboot ScanDisk is activated (Improper shutdown detected. Checking disk for errors.). Previously I've been able to [CANCEL] / [CLOSE] ScanDisk when I knew that I had not shut down properly and the boot sequence would resume and complete. Now if I try to [CANCEL] / [CLOSE] ScanDisk the system hangs and it's back to a power down/reboot attempt. Fortunately, letting ScanDisk run to completion - over the course of 8 to 12 minutes - results in a resumption of the boot process culminating in a successful reboot. Now the kicker. The reboot issue may not be associated with any of the updates. Examination of C:\SCANDISK.LOG reveled the following: ******************* Microsoft ScanDisk for Windows NOTE: If you use an MS-DOS program to view this file, some of the characters may appear incorrectly. Use a Windows program such as Notepad instead. Log file generated at 09:28 on 11/21/2003. ScanDisk used the following options: Standard test Automatically fix errors Drive Local Disk (C:) contained the following errors: The drive contained an error in its FSInfoSector. Resolution: Repair the error Results: Error was corrected as specified above. ScanDisk found errors on this drive and fixed them all. ------------------- What is FSInfoSector and what's its function? If ScanDisk was able to fix the error why do I continue to have problems? Is the reported 8 to 12 minute ScanDisk time appropriate for an 80 GB hard drive (about 30% full)? Unless you selected the option to save the Windows 98 files when you
installed WindowsMe, you're out of luck. You'll need the CD to reinstall
Windows 98 after you wipe your hard drive clean and start over.
