Please help....

When I boot up in normal mode i get:
An exception 0E has occurred at 0028:00000002 in VxD.
This was called from 0028@C15b4303 in VxD. It may be
possible to continue normally.

....

Windows protection error. You need to restart your
computer. System halted.

I can boot in safe mode.

I have been trying to solve this for a month and I am
still stuck.

Help please.
Thank you
Taron

This type of error is usually caused by the Display drivers.
Try this
Reboot to Safe Mode
Open Device Manager
Remove ALL Display Adapters
Remove ALL Monitors
Reboot to Normal Mode - Windows should reinstall the drivers properly,
hopefully curing your problem.

Hi Noel,
Thanks but it did not work, same problem.

I am afraid this is something to do with Symantec and the
failed install of Windows Media Player 9.x. Symantec
claims is a Microsoft issue and they say there is not a
lot they can do (can not remove Internet security in safe
mode).

Any more ideas?
Thank you
Taron

AH!! - Norton Strikes again!
This is a fairly standard response from Symantec - it's NEVER their
problem!!

Try this
Start|Run
type
SCANREG /FIX (note the space!)
click OK

Windows will reboot

OR - and this one's a cracker!
did you reinstall ME over itself at some point?

Too right is not their problem...it is mine now....

Anyway. Tried scanreg /fix and got an error msg: "caused
an error in kernel32.dll.

Re: Installing ME on ME, the answer is no, however the
whole saga started when I was upgrading (and failed to
complete the upgrade) to WMP 9 so I it could be that I am
fighting against Symantec I/Net Security.

What's next?

Last resource is Uninstall Windows ME (which to make
things more complex was an upgrade from 95...)? How do I
get rid of Symantec from the Bios though?

Thank you

Certainly, WMP9 is known to complain if Norton is running during the install
(as is IE6) - but I haven't heard it cause such drastic problems before.

Try booting with an ME startup disk, and running SCANREG /FIX from there -
it should work.

Not sure that reinstalling ME would help - but look here in case you want to
try it

Thanks Noel,

I ran scanreg /fix from dos and seemed to have completed
OK, then from DOS I tried to boot up but same old
message. Does not help much the fact that I don't know my
way around in DOS.

I am really lost on what to try next. Suggestions?

Thank you,
Taron

The fact that scanreg failed in Windows but succeeded in DOS would tend to
indicate corruption somewhere - bur where, and why?

Had you had (and 'cured') a virus infection recently?

The trouble is that with a month-old problem, there's probably a lot that
you've done that may or may not be reversible, but will certainly have
clouded the issue.
I suspect that you may be best to try a reinstall of ME - make sure that you
uninstall IE6 and delete the wmploc.dll before attempting it!
(Have you got your data backed up??)

You can't uninstall WMP9 - although System Restore would normally be able
to do it, I would certainly not recommend trying it after a month!

To uninstall IE6, use Add/Remove Programs -

I tried Control Panel Add/Remove but could not do it from
there. Only two option I have from there are "Add a
component and Repair".

sigh....

What would be the last chance? I have my important data
backed up and am getting ready to format the whole thing...

Thanks again

Re: Desperate: Windows protection error by Noel

OK - that makes life difficult
look here for advice from MS
"How to Remove Internet Explorer 6.0 or Outlook Express 6.0 Before You
Reinstall Windows (Q312474)"
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q312474

If that doesn't work, then all I can think of is to reinstall ME, then
remove IE, and reinstall it

First - go here, and follow the instructions on how to download IE6 for
installation offline (if you don't already have a CD copy of the files)
http://www.broomeman.com/support/wsiedown.html
Then (preferably) copy the files to a CD so that you've got them available
if you need them again later.

Then - go here and download the IERadicator
http://www.litepc.com/ieradicator.html

Do the reinstall of ME (as per
http://www.btinternet.com/~winnoel/reinME.htm), then

Run IEradicator to remove all traces of IE from your machine, then follow
Donny's
instructions on how to install IE6 from the downloaded files.

HTH - and Good Luck
