G'day mate. Sometimes if there are programs running in
the background they can affect defrag and cause it to
restart. To stop this occurrence, Ctrl+Alt+Delete and
remove all necessary programs from the task list and then
your defrag should work.

Answered in System Tools........use Safe Mode to scandisk, then defrag.

Reboot your computer and while it is rebooting, tap on F8 (some computers
prefer the Ctrl key) until a menu comes up with white letters and a black
background. Choose Safe Mode. It will boot into a strange looking Windows
with "safe mode" written in all four corners of your screen. When your scan
disk and defrag is over, go to start, reboot and it will take you back to
Normal Mode. Defrags take longer in Safe Mode but they're, well, *safe* ;-)

Don't know who you are but this worked great for me & was
able to Scan & Defrangment completely. Then I turned off
my PC for several hours. When it rebooted & I tried to
Scan disk again, the same files that I thought I deleted
(using END TASK option) showed up again, preventing the PC
from the scanning & defragmenting. It's like I'm back at
square-one again. Can you help again? Please!

Jan......you are not 'deleting' these files......you are simply shutting
them down so you can do the scandisk and defrag ONLY. You would be a very
sorry lady if they did not reappear!!

Either find an older copy of EndItAll, do the Control-Alt-Delete thing every
time you want to defrag......or do it in Safe Mode.

Those files you shut down are essential ones.

Cheers......Heather

You are most welcome. These Microsoft news groups are where I learned (and
am still learning) all that I know.

Feel free to ask anything.....anytime. I well remember how incomprehensible
most of it was.......and I just kept reading and asking. Best way to learn,
I think. There are a super group of people on here that can help you.

Cheers.....Heather
