Defrag won't work

I just tryed to Defrag my C drive and it won't work. Worked ok on my D
drive (split drive same hard drive). Also won't verify the C drive in the
event of an illegal shut down.

Did a Virus scan and updated Windows ME with the latest updates.

Any Ideas.

I don't know if this will work, but this is what I do with
my one C:\ drive. My Defrag "stalls" often.

I use Ctrl+Alt+Del to open the "End Tasks" window. From
there, I end the tasks, turn off, all the programs, except
the "Exployer" program. Now that most of my programs,
that write to the harddrive, have been turned off, my
Defrag works fine. Good luck.
