Hi all -

I have been having a problem with the defrag starting to run all of a
sudden, seemingly on its own. The scandisk does not run first, only the
defrag starts up. It does not happen at any particular time of the day, or
day of the week, as if it is a scheduled activity. But, usually when it
starts to run, the machine has been idle for a while. I have gone into
another room for about 15-20 minutes, and when I come back, the defrag
program is running..?

I do not have it set to run on any particular schedule, or..at least not
intentionally. I run the scandisk manually at least every couple of days,
and the defrag every month or so, depending on my computer activities. I
have updated and run my SpyBot, Adaware, AV's, HijackThis and Stinger.
Perhaps a bit of
overkill, but, I seem to be hunting a ghost, so I called on all the
GhostBusters I could think of. ;-)

I'd truly appreciate any suggestions, information or input, in hopes it
might shed some light on what may be causing this odd behavior. Then
perhaps I might have an idea where else to start troubleshooting to find
what/where is causing the defrag to autorun.

Best regards,
Jan :)

Check in your list of 'scheduled tasks' to see if defrag
is listed.

Start,Programs,Accessories,System Tools,Scheduled Tasks.

If it is listed, it sounds as if it is set to run daily.
Under the advanced settings for the scheduled 'job' you
can set the 'job' to run when the machine has been idle
for a set amount of time.

If you don't want the program to run automatically you can
just delete the 'job' from the scheduled job list.

Otherwise you can change the time settings for when it
does run.

Good luck
