How long should WME's defrag run anyway? I have been running it for
some 12 hours now with its fancy graphics and it seems to be
never-ending.

Do it in Safe Mode.

Try running it in Safe Mode too. You appear to have something running in
the background in Normal Mode which needs to be 'turned-off' for the
duration of Scandisk and Defrag.

BTW - Although Scandisk can be run in Real Mode DOS using the WinMe Start-up
(Floppy) Disk, Defrag cannot be run in DOS. It's a Windows application only.

If both Scandisk and Defrag work 'normally' in Safe Mode, you can, if
necessary take a look at ScanDefrag v5.3.

This is a FREE utility, written by several well respected contributors to
these News Groups and has been designed to run several original MS utilities
through a 'filter' which eliminates the usual junk which stops Scandisk (and
Defrag) from running properly in Normal Mode - as you are already
experiencing <g>

You can get ScanDefrag at either of the two sites below - and be sure to
read the associated notes for setting it up:
http://home.earthlink.net/~bblanton2/scandefrag/main.htm
http://www.blueorbsoft.com/scandefrag/index.html

HTH and good luck

If you defrag on a regular basis and it's taking this amount of time, it's
generally because something is running in the background. Go into a Clean
Boot mode or as Alias suggests, try Safe mode. Another option is to download
Diskeeper Lite, a free defrag utility which takes approx 30 minutes to run
on this machine. If interested, you can get it at;
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=1207

Try it.

Can't believe nobody asked how much free space is available on the drive
being defragged........
Jethro, if you have 10%, or less, your defrag could take a painfully long
time. Even with more than 10%, it can take quite a while. I, personally,
know of one that took over three days before completion...running
constantly. Defrag needs this free space to shuffle data around....the less
you have, the longer it will take.
However, the other posts are all good ones that you should heed.
Heirloom, old and have lots of space

Thanks for responses all

Actually I am in Safe Mode. As of this moment, Defrag has been
running almost 24 hours! I am afraid to stop it somehow, but I was
thinking of doing that in order to try Diskeeper or some such.

Sure am concerned at this point. I don't want to lose the content of
my friend's drive - which by the way is 8GB of which 50% is used.

24 Hours for 8GB? - Wow! - that must be a record <g>

There certainly does appear to be a problem if the disk is only 50% full
(BTW - Good point, HL) but 'Pausing' and/or 'Cancelling' Defrag
mid-operation doesn't *usually* cause any further problems. (Well, not in my
experience).

The fact that this is happening in Safe Mode though, does cause some concern
and if it continues, you may have to bite the bullet. How far has it run up
to now? Does it keep trying to defragment the same area or it just a V E R
Y S L O W progressive operation?

I don't have any further suggestions except to either let it continue or
stop it, salvage whatever data you can, and only then comprehensively
re-test the disk.

It has been another 2 hours now. The graphic display is one with
which I am not familiar. It graphically shows boxes being moved
around, up/down & left/right. There is no text or anything else
showing progress or anything else. Hence I don't know if hitting
<esc> will do anything. Ctrl-alt-delete might bring up a task window
in which I may be able to stop the task, but I fear the impact of an
unsafe close-down of defrag. But, I may have to - or simply power
down, which may be worse.

Thanks

Wow! You're busy this AM. Thanks.

The defrag display is 'full screen', and so there is nothing at
bottom, top, or elsewhere to work with.

In any case, I bit the bullet and hit <esc>. Guess what? The screen
changed and showed a 'completion' (100%) window. So I guess the
defrag had completed sometime earlier, but did not terminate properly.

I checked, and the machine seems to running fine. :<)

BTW, the 'time since last defrag' is now 0 days.

Thanks again -

Jethro

Hmm.. sounds like it's oversized. You should see the Stop, Pause and Hide
Details buttons in 'full screen' mode in the lower portion of the screen.
Probably set as 600 x 800 or so window, - your Normal Mode resolution
setting - in a 640 x 480 Safe Mode environment. You may wish to resize it if
you decide to regularly run Defrag in Safe Mode. But nevertheless, you
managed to terminate it without damage - and that's really what matters.

No doubt it was the Safe Mode that was 'hiding' a portion of your screen.
You should have had the options to 'pause', 'stop', etc. at the bottom of
the screen. Before you managed to bring it all to an end, I was going to
ask if the defrag was 'restarting'......something that is *usually* not a
problem in the Safe Mode.

FYI on Diskeeper. I used that app with Me for a long time, with great
success. In fact, had it set to defrag while the screensaver was on and it
kept the HD defragged continuously. I think it is a great program...worked
very well with Me.
In fact, it is basically the same defrag app that comes with XP.....made by
the same folks.

Glad you managed to get everything squared away..........
Heirloom, old and time for another nap
