Random lockups
My computer randomly freezes when trying to start
programs. Could this be a hardware problem? when the
computer freezes explorer stops responding and when trying
to end task it I get a blue screen saying the system is
busy. Could this be a hard drive error? it seems my
computer takes longer to shut down all of a sudden. could
a "dirty" reinstallation of Windows ME fix this? I've
scanned with Norton 2003 Pro, Adaware 6, Spybot,

found no sign of viruses or spyware. I have to restart

URGENT - big problem
Ok, this is going to take a while to explain, but
basically my dad deleted windows.
Using MS-DOS he ran the 'del *.*' command (or something
similar) accidentaly in the C:\WINDOWS directory.
Obviously not everything was deleted as some file are
protected I think. After a while the computer began to
hang and eventually it crashed.
OK. When we tried booting up normally, we got a message
saying something like 'Cannot find SYSTEM.INI. Bott with
Emergengy Boot Disk and type SCANREG /RESTORE'.
In safe mode we would get a message about a file
called 'IFSHLP.SYS' missing.
Next I created a boot disk (downloaded from the internet
through my 98SE) for WinME, and used this to do
the 'SCANREG /RESTORE'
This did not affect the way safe mode failed but when the
computer booted up normally we would get a message not
only complaining about IFSHLP.SYS but also DISPLAY.SYS.
Using the boot disk again I copied the IFSHLP.SYS from my
Win98SE to the ME as a guess. This worked! The computer
would now boot up in safe mode and in normal mode (but in
normal mode it would still complain about DISPLAY.SYS).
I did try copying DISPLAY.SYS from the 98, but the ME
didnt like this. (something about an old version of ms-
dos i think)
But there are more problems, some big, some small. Our
sound no longer works, the mouse drivers don't work,
important stuff like RUNDLL32.EXE is missing (and to my
sister's dispair their is no minesweeper). There are many
files like RUNDLL32.EXE that I would think of as
important, but obviously not protected. There is no way I
can copy all of these files (from the 98) and hope that
they work.
We do not have a Windows ME CD apparently to reinstall
windows, all we have is a 'Recovery Disk' (floppy disk)
(this works as a boot disk, wipes hard drive clean and
reinstalls windows to factory settings from a hidden
partion on the HD)
The good thing is our wireless network is working so we
can back thing up to our other PC, but as I wasnt the one
who set up the network I dont think I can repeat it when
we reset the pc using the recovery disk.
One thing I did think of, but I'm not so sure about is
System Restore. Just before my dad messed up i installed
WMP9Series which said it was creating a system restore
point. I'm not quite sure how it works but i don't think
it will recover the lost files. What I did think was that
maybe because it recovers the settings of your PC (im not
sure about this) maybe I can backup the system restore
point, do a Recovery, reinstall software, and then use the
System Restore to reconfigure the network.
As I said I'm not sure how that works, so anyone who can
help with a way of reinstalling WinME without a CD and
without wiping HD clean using a recovery is appreciated.
Or anyways to backup my network settings before wiping
hardrive clean and then recovering these settings (I have
a CD/RW drive if it is big to back up). Also maybe you
know how to just re-extract the stuff from the CAB files
in C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS but this might not fix
everything (esp. cos the only way I can get my sound
drivers is from the recovery disk). Or maybe you know
something else that will help.
Any help is greatly appreciated. Tag: DEVLDR16 error message: DEVCON32.DLL Tag: 236004

Over the past week or so, I have seen postings complaining
about the "advice" given through this forum. I, for one,
have posted a few times over the past year and your advice
has been extremely helpful. I also periodically scan the
postings and have picked-up a lot of valuable information.
I used to be a computer user who "knew enough to be
dangerous." Through this forum, I now know a lot more and
have become less dangerous! Thanks for all your FREE
(emphasis added) advice. It is truly appreciated.
I do have one question. The main desktop P/C my wife and

runs Windows 98. Is there a specific newsgroup for

need good XP info site - MVP's only please
Before I order my new computer, I wish to research some sites which
would help me to decide how I want the store tech to initially setup the
new system. (Some system features listed below)
Can any MVP's recommend sites with easy to understand, accurate,
up-to-date information on the subject, that can help address my concerns
in the following areas?
On-board memory - ideal size? - maximum?
Recommendations for partition sizes for 120 to 160 GB hard drive?
Suggestions for setting up XP supervisor controls (never used a NT based
system before)
Recommendations on use of XP with older programs such as MS Office Pro
97, Corel WordPerfect Suite 8, Corel Draw 8.
How to configure computer to access programs on second computer via
wireless link.
New computer will be P4 - 2.6+Ghz with WinXP home and a hard drive of
120 to 160 GB. Suggested RAM - 512Mb. New computer will use dialup modem
and will soon use ExpressVu's satellite internet service (one way high
speed service that still requires a phone line for uplink but uses
satellite for downlinks). Tech suggests using wireless link (802.11g) to
allow old computer to access internet through new computer, and to allow
both to share files (and programs?).
Old computer is P2 - 350Mhz with Win ME, and cabling it to new computer
is impractical.
Thanks in advance for all assistance.

Graphics card driver installation
Hello:
I have a Compaq Deskpro with a Rage ProTurbo AGP 2X graphics card. I
installed an "alternate" driver provided by ATI that is supposed to add
OpenGL functionality to this old graphics card, but Starry Night Pro, the
only application I have that uses OpenGL, still reports that "OpenGL failed
to initialize." I see no other indication that I have it at all. I
understand that OpenGL itself is part of Windows; is that true? I was
unable to uninstall the original driver as it didn't show up in the
Add/Remove Programs list and I couldn't find any associated 63-character
registry entries as discussed in the MS support article on the subject; but
I installed the new driver anyway. Now everything seems to work right, and
I have features I didn't before; I just didn't get OpenGL. And I have a
mixture of the two drivers appearing in the registry. Is that likely to be
the reason I'm missing OpenGL? If I uninstall this new driver and reinstall
the original one, could I then get it unstalled properly? Could I go in the
registry and delete references to the original files instead? Any ideas?
Thanks.

How do I use a caddy?
Recently my laptop had to be replaced because the problem
was un-fixable. The repair shop was very accomodating and
returned my old HDD with my new laptop, as half of my
degree is on it. Unfortunately I was unable to perform a
neat exchange of the old for the new HDD, so had to invest
in a 'caddy'. This is where my problem lies: I have thus
far been unable to find how to open the old HDD through
the USB system. I'm not sure I'm making myself clear, but
if you could help me I would be most grateful. A CD was
included in the caddy pack, but proves unnecessary as the
software is apparently already installed in ME and XP
[OSs]. I was told a programme should open and run
immediately after connection - but nothing happens. If it
would be possible, please could you let me know, step by
step, how to open my HDD? Thank you.

Blank Blue Screen
My dad said that his computer hung the other night and
even <ctrl><alt><del> would not work, so he powered the
computer off. When he brought it back up the next day,
all he gets is a blank blue screen. (No Tool bar, no
Icons). Not the blue screen of death, because there are
not any error messages on it. The mouse pointer does
work. Also <ctrl><alt><del> does work, showing zero
programs running. So we know Explorer is not running.
Howerever the computer can be shutdown normally this way.
The system restore does not work....I used article 279736
(How to Start the System Restore Tool from a Command
Prompt). Since, I cannot get into Windows, I had to do
the options from the command prompt. So the next step
was to reload Windows ME. I've tried the reload 4 times,
and all 4 times it appears to load everything properly
(takes about 30 minutes to do this) but when Windows ME
starts, I'm, back to the same blank blue screen.
So the next step I tried was to run msconfig. I can get
this to work by changing the system.ini file and pointing
the shell=progman.exe. Run msconfig from the Program
Manager, and boot up the computer in the diagnostic
mode. When I do this most of the time the Windows ME
will come up in a 640 X 480 X 16 mode. It is not in safe
mode at this time, because all of the icons populate the
screen. However, most of the tray icons do not load. I
cannot change the screen settings because it wants to
reboot, and if I reboot it will give me the blank blue
screen again, unless I bring it up in diagnostic mode.
Also, when I bring up the computer in safe mode, all I
have is the blank blue screen with "Safe Mode" in the
four courners.
I have tried to bring up the computer selecting the
option to create a \bootlog.txt. But I cannot find the
bootlog.txt file. It should be under c:\bootlog.txt
right? Either the computer is not creating the file, or
I am not looking for it in the right place.
Any help would be apprecaiated with this crazy Blank Blue
Screen.
