Hello..
I am requesting help on my mother's behalf.
I have windows xp and have only learned how to use a PC on
windows xp.
My mom, however has windows ME and I have encouraged her
to regularly defrag and clean disk....(at least once a
month).
Well, when she tries to explain what her defragging
program does, I'm lost, as she explains her's to work
differently than mine in xp.
This is her situation:
She opens up the defrag program.
Starts to defrag.
The problem is; it only goes to 3%, then stalls.
I explained to her that sometimes it can take a very long
time, especially if she hasn't defragged in soooo long.
So, she explains that she has started defrag in the
morning and let it go, then when she returns to check on
it several hours later, it is still on 3% and has failed
to complete the process.
She said it nevers goes beyond that point.
I know mine at times has taken up to an hour before, but
never stalled or failed to complete defragging.
Does any one know anything about ME? and how she can
utilize this program to get her PC running smoother?
Thank you...
Apeke

DO CTRL+ALT+DEL AND CLOSE OUT EVERY PROGRAM EXCEPT
EXPLORER AND SYSTEMTRAY, BUT YOU REALLY DON'T EVEN NEED
SYSTEMTRAY. THEN DEFRAG. IT WILL TAKE A LONG TIME! LONG!
IT TOOK MINE OVER 24 HOURS ONE TIME SO BE PATIENT, AND
MINE ALSO STALLED AT 20 SOMETHING PERCENT, JUST WAIT.

I use ME and I use SAFE MODE to do my scandisk and defrag
because, with safe mode, your startup items are not
running and they don't interfere with scandisk and defrag
in SAFE MODE. Big difference here...and it DOES NOT take
forever either....my scandisk runs in about 5 mins
(standard scan only) and defrag takes about 15 mins. These
programs WILL DO a few restarts, but with WindowsME,
that's normal...system has to "settle down" and when it
does, things run quickly and a-ok.

she has to press Control/alt/delete(over and over again),
and close all programs (choose "end task")except explorer
and systray, sometimes it takes a few seconds for the it
actually pop up so you can click on end task, in cases
where it doesnt, just click on it again, and it should pop-
up. she also has to disable her screensaver (right click
on a blank part of the screen, choose properties, then
screensaver, then "none") it would also help if she cleans
out her temporary internet files before hand, but not
necessary. I have learned that if your computer does not
get to 10% there is something holding it up. So just close
out all those other things like I said in the begginning.
Now, I have Windows me, and had to research all this stuff
before for myself. I just keep my screensaver off to make
things easier. Good luck!
