I cannot access any icons in the control panel to make
changes. When I click on an icon in the control panel, I
get a window that comes up that is titled Control Panel
and the text says,"Windows cannot access the specified
device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate
permissions to access the item." I think it has something
to do with passwords and administrators but I don't know
how to correct. Please help. Thanks.

You may have a corrupt Control Panel or something is not
"letting you in".

Type, "control" (or) "control.exe" (no quotes) from your
Run > Dialog Box.
This command *should* bring up your Control Panel into view
in a normal fashion.

Please post back with your findings.

Or, you could be another CoolWebSearch victim :

Use CWShredder, the removal tool:

Please post back with your results

Hi Mow,

Thanks for jogging my memory -
I'm not entirely sure that running the Shredder in Safe Mode
is the "cure" here. *I* would recommend running "CWS"
in normal UI.

How many of these posts have been spotted?
Running "Hijack This" is a viable option as well.
Or running CWS and HJT.

I'll try to Google Groups this NG for similar and have a look.

Regards,
