Re: Control Panel Icons not working by Michael

Hmm!
I went through the process and the Control panel options certainly run
correctly when double clicking the various .cpl files
Then went back to Control Panel and found that two work correctly from the
Icon.. The Files and Folders and the Scanners control items..
After renaming the CONTROL.INI file and letting the system rebuild a new
one we are back to the original problem again.. It look as though many more
system files are corrupted somehow.
I also noticed another funny thing was we could not find the MOUSE options
in the .cpl list and one of the reasons for doing all this is that when you
right-click the mouse in certain circumstances (renaming files etc) the
right click always seems to initiate a dial-up connection..
right clicking on the desktop behaves correctly but right clicking in a
windows explorer type window does this..
This ME set-up has been working correctly for several years and has
suddenly developed these quirks.. When connecting to the Internet the
connection activates and data is exchanged during the handshake etc.. but
nothing appears in IE..
Rebuilding the DUN connectoid seemed to solve this problem yesterday but
today the modem connects but then nothing!!!
Could a virus infection have caused this? The owners NAV won't now run, nor
would it uninstall?? It says the installer program is out of date perhaps
because we have tried to copy some system files back from the ME disk.
So many strange things are happening that I am beginning to believe that we
need a format/re-install of the OS..
For example autorun runs from the ME disk but none of the initial icons
will work when clicked.. Maybe it needs a new mouse driver but the mouse
works fine
in DOS mode or on the ME desktop..
Any more suggestions please..
Michael

Hmm - for the mouse problem....
Reboot to Safe Mode
Open Device Manager
Remove ALL Mouse entries
Reboot to Normal Mode - Windows will reinstall the required drivers -
hopefully curing your problem.

Thanks again,
Will try that when I get back to the machine (it's a neighbour's) possibly
tomorrow..
My own route was from DOS-Windows2-Win for Workgroups-Win95-Win98-WinXP so
I missed out the ME experience!!! The last three plus an XP laptop are all
still working and networked here. Only ever looked at one other ME
machine about 6 years ago at another friend's. Discovered 'restore' there
but of course I am very familiar with that now..
This ME Mouse thing is proving very strange as the symptoms seem to change
depending on whether your are inside or outside an application.. i.e.
desktop behaviour appears quite normal but within Wexplorer etc. everything
seems to go weird. Will try another AV program too as NAV won't work and
AVG won't install.
All disk data seems OK though both from DOS prompt and Explorer (provided
you don't try to Right Click). MS Office and printer functions work OK.
The elderly neighbour uses WORD and EXcel and occasionally the Internet for
e-mail etc.. (I've backed up all his data to a flash drive so we could
re-install ME)
thks

It's not unusual for other AV's to refuse to install/work if bits of NAV (or
some other AV's) are left behind.
On ME, NAV should be consigned to the scrap pile - because it WILL break it
eventually. Norton never bothered to properly get to grips with System
Restore in ME, (amongst other things) , and tends to break that with
monotonous regularity.

to get rid of Norton.....

Control Panel Icons not working - update by Michael

Michael
Mon May 22 10:16:53 CDT 2006

Hmm!
After messing around during the weekend I still have the original problem
with most of the control panel Icons not working.
The mouse and the connect on right click have now been fixed.
I tried the suggestion about deleting Control.ini but although it creates
another .ini file , the same icons still don't work
I've cleared off lots of the redundant programs including NAV now and
installed F-PROT and there were, and are, no viruses. I've also brought the
computer to my house. AVG install still fails!!
I checked and defragged the hard disk.
I noticed that the recycle bin icon on the desktop also fails and says it
can't find 'UE32.exe'. Where can I find that? It'snot on any of my
machines
I can operate the recycle bin correctly from the My Computer entry though
so that is no real problem.. I've used a couple of tools to correct
Registry Errors and redundancies etc.. CCleaner being the main one as I
use it continually on my XP machine. I also updated the system (System
Update).
I would like to give it back now as most things can be made to work but
feel I should correct somehow the control panel and recycle bin icon
problems first.
Why should the panel display and most of the icons appear useless.

Michael

Re: Control Panel Icons not working - update by Noel

Noel
Mon May 22 16:20:20 CDT 2006

If F-Prot is still installed - then I'm not surprised that an AVG install
fails!
The fact that the Recycle bin is showing failure to delete files is
worrying - it could be caused either by malware, or by disk or file
corruption.

Boot to DOS using a floppy, and do the following

DELTREE C:\RECYCL~1

accept the warnings, allow the deletion to complete, and then reboot to
Normal Mode - this should rebuild a normal Recycle bin.

CCLeaner is a registry cleaner (amongst other things)- and as such suffers
from the same faults as every other member of that b$st$rd breed - it's
out-of-date before it's released, and only as good as the knowledge of its
user.

DO NOT rely on it for anything - ALWAYS check what it wants to 'correct'
manually, before allowing it to do anything.

Registry entries are there for a reason - and you need more reason that
CCleaner (on its own) to remove them!

see how the system react afterwards.....

If that fails to resolve things.... Have you checked seriously for
malware? - used HiJackThis, and had the resulting log checked by an expert?
(NOTE: - please do NOT post your log here! - no true experts will respond to
open newsgroup posts of HJT logs)

Re: Control Panel Icons not working - update by Michael

Michael
Tue May 23 11:04:44 CDT 2006

Noel,
The F-PROT was only installed because the AVG failed to install..
It also seems you can't report an 'AVG install failure' to Grisoft until
after you
have installed?? it and registered your ownership..
DELTREE is an unknown command in this base DOS and I could not find the
recycle~1 tree anyway.

Talking to my neighbour, apparently this machine was supplied by a local
'expert' about 5/6 years ago.. He had it back to repair/cleanup once a
couple of years ago and charged £80.. This time he asked me to take a look
first and anyway the 'expert' has not phoned back and his office is now
closed..
The elderly user only really uses Word and Excel and occasionally the
internet but it's probably been powered on longer in my house since last
Friday than the whole of it's life. I expect I've had it online for longer
too.
I have had a couple of 'blue screens' and had to re-boot.. Booting seems
to take longer since the Scandisk and Defrag (thought this was supposed to
speed things up)
I'm a bit suspicious about the ME defrag..
I only use CCleaner normally to clean redundant TEmp files.

Anyway I've now bitten the bullet and decided to re-install ME and his
software..
Saved all his documents and rescued some of his pictures ( he obviously
tried a digital camera since the pictures are dated 2005)
and I'm in the process of formatting the hard drive..
Thanks for all your help and assistance but something was very weird
somewhere..
Incidentally I discovered that UE32.Exe is an unerase program from
somewhere.
Thanks again
Michael ( I might be back!!!)

Re: Control Panel Icons not working - update by Noel

Noel
Tue May 23 16:41:27 CDT 2006

There is no support for the Free version anyhow - it's a minimum-cost offer
(can't really fault them for that!).

DELTREE is supported in ME DOS - but you have to boot to one of the options
2 or 3 (with/out CD Support) - Minimal Boot does NOT include the full
instruction set.

Good luck with the reinstall (I assume you're doing a reformat first??)
