    - Sluggishness I'm on dial-up, and for the past couple of weeks my internet hasn't been as smooth as it used to be. (I use the I.E. browser). For example, if I click the dash to lower a window, it won't go down smoothly. It goes down a bit slower and almost in sections. And when I scroll web pages, they don't scroll smoothly either. They scroll in "sections." I'm up to date with Norton and ran it, nothing came up. I scan disk, but sometimes it doesn't get that far - 2 blue blocks and that's it. It keeps running but doesn't get any further then the 2 blue blocks. And the times it does finish, there's no errors. The sluggishness does clear up after I reboot, but after a while it happens all over again after I do something, such as open my scanning software or after I put an attachment onto an email (to my hotmail account). I ran the Resolution Asst. and had it check the memory, hard drive and CPU. They all checked out. I even Alt-Ctl-Del and "end tasked" everything besides I.E. and rebooted. But again, the sluggishness returns and scan disk still doesn't get far. I restored defaults in the Internet Options "Advanced" tab, but that didn't work either. I don't download music - I don't download anything. I deleted my cookies and all temp files (I do that weekly anyway). But still, the 'herky jerky' Internet returns. However, for the past couple of weeks, I've noticed a folder, "content i.e. 5," in my temp files. And inside the folder are "index.dat" files. They can't be delted - "access file might be in use" huh? - but I can delete the folder. However, it and the .dat files always returns. Could that be the problem?     - WINDOWS ME - MULTIPLE ISSUES Hi. I have a Pentium III with WIndows ME. The pc is about 2 years old and my kids use it heavily. Lately, we're getting a ton of "missing dll" errors, and the "blue screen of death". And more annoying - we cannot print from Internet Explorer (version 6). Most of the internet pages won't even load - error says page not found. There's 256mb memory - but when I check system resources it says that only 35% of that is free - and that's with no other packages open. Can anyone recommend how to even start troubleshooting? Not sure if AOL 8.0 caused any problems - but that won't even work now. I've uninstalled and reinstalled and it won't run - I had to go back to 7.0. Clicking on the little paperclip shows me the name(s) of the attachments and the option to save them but absolutely nothing happens when I double click on them (this used to open them).     - windows not running I am using windows me and it has stopped running for some reason. I only have access to the internet thru my instant access button on keyboard. I have no start button or toolbar at bottom of screen. The only thing that is on my screen is my screensaver. I can't even get to properties by right clicking on screensaver.     - windows not restarting The Ctrl+Alt+Del function no longer restarts Windows, just crashes it; a reset is then necessary. The "Restart" option in the Start menu also fails; this simply causes a standby-like state in which the hard disks remain on.     - Add/Remove program For some reason my windows stopped keeping track of newly installed programs!     - display and freeze problems I have two problems :- The first is that anything which appears on the screen has a dark line or ghosting across the full width of the screen. This occurs on desktop and in all programs. I am running ME with XP installed in a separate partition. This happens in both. I tried the monitor, using my own leads, on a different PC and everything was OK. I have deleted and re-installed the monitor and display driver but that didn't help. The second problem, which seemed to start at the same time, is the PC freezing randomly and the only way to correct it is switching off/back on. System restore didn't cure either problem. I had installed XP to try to cure the problem, since it didn't I decided to delete this using partition magic. The computer locked up part way through and I have now lost D drive ( system restore ) completely.     - How to password protect folders locally I want to be able to password protect the 'my documents' folder so that if anyone else uses the computer, they won't have access to them. I haven't been able to find a way to do this on a local level. I know that in XP, all you have to do is create multiple users and they are limited to viewing their own "my documents" folder unless they have admin privileges. Is there a way to do this in ME? I did set up another user, and when using the "my documents" icon, I cant see anything, but if I view the "my documents" folder in explorer, then I can see the other users documents. I'd be willing to do this any way that would work. I'm not attached to having a multiple user setup because I am the main person who uses the pc. The compatibility mode paging help screen says that a file cannot be read either in autoexec or configsys so is running in this mode. Says to remove programs recently installed or the files.     - WinMe-Clipboard Viewer The .clp files are associated with Clipbrd.exe, when double clicked the .clp file, it opens the Clipboard Viewer but does not list the contents of the .clp file. The Clipboard Viewer window opens blank. The saved .clp files are of URL addresses. By using the command File > Open, it lists the contents ok. The help tells me to look under the capatibility mode paging reduces overall performance help. This help tells me the system cannot understand a file name in athe autoexec or the configsys? I have Windows ME and my Control Panel won't display any
of its items eventhough it indicates I have 35 items in
the folder. Any suggestions? I searched my the Microsoft
Support site and found a few article which directed me to
the reg. I did the fix, but it still doesn't work. Any
help would be appreciated....
